After walking and driving past this spot for years (yes, years!), we finally stopped in and I'm glad we did. Inside, it has that classic old school bar vibe with wood accents, a few seats at the bar, and about eight tables. There's usually a TV on, but it's not overly loud. It feels like a neighborhood place with regulars, and I get the sense soccer fans love it here. (Or as it's called football) The outdoor seating, though, is where it's at when the weather's nice. Plenty of tables, perfect for people watching or just enjoying the view down Park Ave or Oxford Street. They offer beer on tap, cocktails, and even branded t-shirts and sweatshirts. Food can be ordered from a spot down the street I think it's Vasko's, and the bartender was friendly and helpful. You can pay per drink or run a tab. It's a small place, but a great option to walk to, grab a drink, hang outside, and just chill. Street parking is available, but if you're nearby, walking over is probably the easier option. We went to the Half Pint Pub after attending an event on a Sunday evening. Not many bars are open on Sunday night, so I think we were fortunate to find this place. The building is designed like a pub. It's small, so it might get crowded at times. From the decor, I suspect that they get a soccer crowd. There is some outdoor seating for good weather. Half Pint has a nice beer menu with good variety. We were able to find beers we liked. A lot of bars do not have a variety of stouts, so having only one stout is normal. We found the bartender to be friendly and service was fast. If I lived in Rochester, I would go to this place again! read more

It's been a minute since my last trip to Half Pint, but I have so many positive and unique memories here. From two horrible tinder dates back in my single days to post-Pride fest hangs with friends, this Park Ave watering hole is a wonderful, tiny spot to grab a beer, congregate, and likely see someone you know walking by in the summer. Their offerings on tap vary but there is something for everyone. Now that I am a dog owner, I can't wait to go here with Fred and show off her cuteness for all of Park Ave to see. The lights in the wintertime remind me of some kind of awesome log cabin, so this spot, while associated with summer for me, is great in all seasons. I honestly do not even know if they serve wine, as this spot is noted for it's beer (hence pint duh) but I know they always have a cider selection ready to go. The beer selection is absolutely perfect and rotates enough to keep interest. The service is completely on par with what you'd expect of some sort of elitism. If you're not a friend before you walk in the staff seems very unwelcoming. I still tip 30-50% because I've been in the industry for 20 years around the country but I gotta say, this is on par with what you'd expect from sort of upper class bar if you're coming in not looking like a college athlete or part of a golf club or some shit. I accidentally asked for a half pint of a beer that I didn't realize wasn't served as a half pint and apologized. I've been scowled at and seemed to have bothered every single bartender asking for a drink. I don't speak above anyone else, people order ahead of me, I'm in no rush. If the outdoor seating wasn't perfect I wouldn't ever come here. Here's the thing, I'll keep coming here and being treated like scum of the earth. I don't know if it's because how I look, maybe people typically tip more than 50%?, maybe I'm just not cool enough. Other than the staff being miserable, which I am really sorry for because that would suck to work in that mood, the clientele is great, beer is good, and again, seating outside is just perfect. Half Pint is pretty awesome. You can bring dogs inside (or keep them with you outside), they have a cute old fashioned little house, and their location at Park and Oxford is phenomenal. I would only dock points because to me there's nothing really especially exciting or interesting about it beyond that. It's pretty much just your basic bar designed to cater to basic Park Ave cats. Especially when you contrast it with the Red Fern right across the way, which is about as non-basic as Rochester gets, I can't help but feel that it could have a little more going on. There was a Crispin cider listed on the menu, which I found of interest, but it was out so I got Embark instead which is pretty common all throughout Rochester. They also don't serve any food, so you have to go across the street to one of a number of establishments. Basically I would mainly recommend Half Pint as a fun place to post up on a warm evening with some friends if you're committed to that neighborhood. I will say that it's a nice low key easygoing bar, certainly compared to Dragonfly, Public House and some of the other bars you get further down Park Avenue. It's not bad but it's not especially interesting except insofar that it has a convenient location and no major flaws other than the tiny amount of space. The space is tiny so it's perfect for a cozy night out on a slower evening like a Tuesday or Wednesday for a post-work drink. I tend to frequent now more so on warmer, sunny days to settle in on their outdoor "patio." They have several tables outside (more than inside) so it's pretty easy to nab a spot to soak up the sun and enjoy a few weekend daytime beers. My friends come to watch sports. They have tvs inside. As for the drinks, I rarely see anyone getting the half pints anymore... not sure if that plan is gone to the wayside so if you want to get a halfsie of two different beers, you might have to ask for it because the default lately has been a single pint. They've had Bell's and 3HB on tap for a while, I tend to go that route. Brooklyn Summer Ale is a go-to when it's in season. Ciders are a win too. They have liquor so a solid vodka soda is another option for me. Their bloody marys are great too! Spicy! They toss in a dash o' red wine, which gives it some depth. This establishment upon first look seems to check out as a fun place for me and the girls to spend a night, but if you read between the lines this place spells disaster. To start with, at the Old Toad I usually order my fave (a Boddington's Pale Ale) and they told me that they didn't carry that here? If you want to compete with the Old Toad how to you plan on doing that without the Boddington's? What a sick puny little shack of bar. While they have many beers on tap and friendly service, the clientele are putrid and offensive. Loud mouthed men betting on horse races and screeching women insulting each others' perfume. During the warmer seasons, the establishment is infested with smelly drooling dogs (non pure-bred mutts) and it is impossible to avoid tripping over these foul beasts' water dishes. 5 stars because they were understanding and they know the dogs are a problem, they just haven't figured out what to do about it. read more

I just had the chance to check this place out (after work, of course) and I really enjoyed it. It's a cool place albeit very small. The inside has room for only a handful of people. Luckily they have a great outdoor area with lots of little tables and chairs set up. Prime Park Ave people watching. It's great during the summer when you can take your drinks out there and enjoy the weather but, I assume it could get quite cramped inside during the winter. Came here last night for after work drinks and was super excited about it. I literally drive past Half Pint all the time and people are always outside this time of the year and I love little pubs so this was no-brainer. It is tiny and on the corner of Park and Oxford, so in a wonderful location. We got there right around 6 so it was opportune time to grab a seat in the sun, people watch and more importantly dog watch. There's a water bowl outside of the bar for dogs and that's so nice. Beers aren't too, too pricey, I mean you're paying for craft, so you're looking at like $5 a beer. The trade off is that Half Pint has some good beers on tap, including my all-time summer favorite beer, Sam Adams Porch Rocker. I got each of my beers very quickly and the bartenders were real chill. What a cool little place, and when I say little I mean that in the most literal sense possible. I came here later on a Wed evening, so it wasn't too crowded. The bar is tiny though, and I could see it getting pretty uncomfortable during busier times. They also have an outdoor seating area as well, but it fills up pretty quick. I was also a little surprised by the bathroom situation, as they only have one for all patrons (for a second I thought I had walked into the wrong one). Took a bit longer than expected to get a beer for the amount of people there, but the service was super friendly. Can't really see them as having the space back there for a 2nd bartender. I was a bit surprised by the prices, it was a lot less than I was expecting. The beer prices ranged from about $4.50-$5 for craft type draft beers. The cool thing about this place (and their namesake) is the fact that you can either get a full pint of one beer, or two half pints of different beers on the menu (both for the same price). It's a great way to try new beers. I highly recommend the Tangerine beer.. Yum! They do have food (kind of). It's not cooked onsite, but ordered from Mozzeronis which is right across the street. You can order food from mozzeroni's across the street which is just ok food but its better than nothing. The only negatives and the reason this bar gets 4 stars rather than 5 is that there's only one single use bathroom and the place closes at 10:30 outdoor because of the noise ordinance. Half Pint is one of those Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of bars. During the day and on off-nights, it's perfect! Not overly crowded, great outdoor seating for when Rochester isn't trying to cover the world in snow, and the beer selection is excellent. It's a great place to just have a drink and relax. Then there are those weekend nights and the later part of the weeknights and it's like they try to turn this place into a clown car. It's packed to the brim, you can't hear anything, and everyone is bumping into one another. The beer selection is still excellent, but you'll be waiting at least 5 minutes before the bartender finally realizes you need a drink. Mr. Hyde nights aside, I really like it here and it's perfect for a week d afternoon to just sit and people watch. Passed by many times and decided to finally try this place out. The decor is simple earth tones, along the lines of an old world pub. It looks small from the outside, but its even smaller than you expect on the inside. But it's nice, it feels friendly from the moment you walk in. Walked in around 7:00 on a Wednesday, and it was nearly empty, only a few regulars at the bar. The friendly bartender served me right away. The only thing that puzzled me was the music. It was very loud. Almost too loud for the small room. But I ignored it. If there's no room at the bar, there are several small tables around to congregate at. The televisions seem out of place here. I should mention there's a great selection of beer on tap. Slowly the place began to fill up, and certainly a mixed crowd of 20-somethings and 30-somethings. It doesn't take many people to fill this place up. But that's okay, because a lively bar is a fun bar. Except as the place filled up, the music was turned up louder to blare over the ambient conversation. That was odd. But there's a great selection of beer on tap. I should mention that I went for a refill and I kicked the keg. So I only got a 3/4 beer. The bartender told me she'd top me off after the keg was switched out, but I wasn't too worried. True to her word, she came by with a half-pint (Get it?) in addition to the beer I was already drinking. Now that is attention to detail, and I made sure to tip accordingly. By the time my friend and I left the bar, they were playing dance music, which I thought was really odd since there's no where to dance. In short, comfortable place, friendly bartender, good beers... Half Pint is not a theme bar, but its raison d'être seems to be the fulfillment of an architectural pun, rather than to be a great place to get drinks. Don't get me wrong: it's a decent pun. Approaching Half Pint on Park or Oxford, you wonder what treasures this toylike Gaelic bungalow hides within. Crouching amid the neighborhood's larger Victorians, Half Pint does convey a certain hole-in-the-wall Irish cottage charm, but upon entering, its sports bar atmosphere and loosened-tie-and-Dockers clientele will quickly deflate your ill-conceived "Waking Ned Devine" fantasy. The words "brewski" and "bazinga" can be heard humming against its low cathedral ceilings. Its etymological gimmick--bartenders serve two half-pints for the price of one full pint--is great if you're in the mood to experiment, its rotating beer selection is commendable, and its prices are average. But Half Pint ultimately suffers due to its unwillingness to dump the ESPN-adorned HDTVs the way that, say, Skylark and the Daily Refresher have done. With so much potential packed into such a tiny package, it's a shame that Half Pint lacks the imagination to be anything but a claustral watering hole for the corporate set. read more

I was always curious to how a pizza place be located in such a small place. I never had the chance to visit it, but having being at Half pint last night, I officially have a new favorite bar! They totally gutted the inside, and did a really swell job with the makeover with nice woods all over. With a few tables outside you can enjoy the park ave sights/sounds, and inside there is another few tables as well. Half Pint has a limited inside space that would allow a max of 30-40 patrons tops. Anything more would be beyond cramped. However, the smallness of it also makes it a nice small, cozy neighbor pub. It's called half pint because each beer you order comes in 2 1/2 pint glasses(obviously?). This allows you to try 2 different beers, for get this, the same price! I believe beers cost between $4.5-5, which is your typical rochester price for craft beers. Speaking of which, no coors light/bud here. Half Pint offered Rohrbach's, Brooklyn, Shocktop, Abita, Sam Adam's, Great Lakes among others. I also heard that a McSorley's pale ale was going to be on tap next, so it seems that a rotating tap list is going to be practiced!! Located at Oxford and Park, this place could really be quite popular. Please note that when I arrived later in the night, I was shocked to hear it closes @ 12am! Apparently the neighborhood association doesn't allow them to be open until 2am. They push it Fridays/Saturdays to midnight though. Starting off with the pros, Half Pint has the best outdoor seating on Park Ave, with an awesome view of the magnolia trees on Oxford street in the spring. It's exceptionally chill during off peak times (winter/weekday evenings/weekend afternoons), and bartenders tend to be skilled and speedy. They have a decent selection of beers, ranging from run-of-the-mill, to regional, to more exotic. It seems like they change out their taps pretty often, as there are new choices every time I stop in. Somewhat unexpectedly, they also have liquor/wine, but I got kind of a hairy eyeball the last time I ordered a cocktail. Serious beer drinkers only, please! As for the cons, there have been a handful of times where I've walked in and walked out in a matter of seconds, because it's too crowded to even get to the bar. I've also never had a pleasant bathroom experience there...I can't say I blame the staff, because I'm sure it's hard to keep up with a huge volume of customers using just one lavatory. However, the "facility" is often unclean and comes with a long wait time -- an unfortunate logistical problem. Half Pint has some great qualities; all the basics of a great bar are there. They have TVs around the bar, so it's a great place to watch sports. The beer menu is decent - great variety! Also, as their name indicates, they serve half pints. So if you can't decide which beer you'd like to try, you can get two different beers for the price of one. Pretty neat! Because the location is so small, they don't have a kitchen, but they have partnered with a local restaurant for some food offerings. I tried the fried mac and cheese bites.
