A Hidden Gem of Sicilian History and Soul
The Museo del Sale in Nubia is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Western Sicily. We learned so much about the ancient salt-making process and the incredibly grueling conditions the workers endured for centuries. The highlight of our visit was a moving performance by the heir of this tradition, who sang a traditional salt-worker's song--it was a powerful, soulful moment I will never forget. I bought the "Fior di Sale," a rare salt harvested only in July, and brought it back home to Seattle. It is truly the "Flower of Salt," delicate and full of history.
