Fredericksburg Square - Upstairs at the Cabaret

The Cabaret is located at the same site as the popular wedding venue Inn at Fredericksburg Square,…read morebut the Cabaret is located upstairs and performances are sometimes held in the Washington Ballroom. This is a lovely place, and is probably the nicest and most upscale venue in Fredericksburg. It offers live music performances (such as jazz or big band) with couples dancing, along with dinner or hors d'oeuvres, drinks for purchase, etc. The way it works is you purchase a ticket through their website - cost is typically $35 - $45 for the performance alone; when optional hors d'oeuvres are offered it's an additional $15, or if they are including dinner with the performance the cost is typically around $70 all-inclusive of performance, dinner, and gratuity. If you purchase wine, beer, mixed drinks, etc., that is paid on a separate tab at the event. The food served in the past has been excellent. Why do I give only two stars? I have attended several performances at Cabaret, and honestly this place is not ready for prime time. Most recently I attended the Doc Scantlin and Chou Chou performance on Saturday, Oct 1, 2016. The show started at 8:00 PM, and upon arrival at 7:30 we found the front entrance door locked! This was extremely puzzling and we looked around for another entrance but there was none. We went back to the main front entrance and actually had to knock on the door - they opened it and let us in. The server we had was very nice and courteous, but not knowledgeable at all about the limited wine and beer selections that they offered. Twice she had to go and check for an answer about their wine and beer. We each ordered an alcoholic beverage and we knew we would be dancing so we asked for some water - she brought two $3.00 glass bottles of fancy spring water with glasses. I said, "Oh no, we just wanted regular tap water in a glass." She told us they don't serve that! I'm sorry, that is just RIDICULOUS that this establishment does not provide regular, complimentary ice water to its customers who have already purchased a ticket for the performance. In any case, we said we would keep the glass bottled water. However, about 10 minutes later when we wanted to pour the water into our glasses, we discovered that the bottle caps were not the twist-off type and required a bottle opener! So here we are in this fancy place that doesn't serve regular iced water and makes you purchase the fancy glass bottled water and I had to flag down our server and ask her to open our bottles. Along with the locked door I feel that this is simply tacky and not an acceptable level of service for this type of establishment. Additionally, a friend that came with us on Oct 1st decided he wanted to partake in the optional hors d'oeuvres which we had not purchased tickets for and did not come early for. When he inquired if he could purchase the hors d'oeuvres buffet, Cabaret said yes and took his $15 but failed to mention that the buffet was ending in 20 minutes. So he ended up paying $15 for one small plate of hors d'oeuvres. Upon leaving the ballroom after the performance, the manager asked me how everything was and I mentioned this incident. No attempt was made by Cabaret to remedy the situation or offer a refund to my friend. Poor business practice, for sure. In summary, this is a very nice venue that has a lot of potential, however for the ticket prices they charge I feel that the service level is severely lacking. (Carlyle Club in Alexandria is the same type of venue, yet they typically charge $25 - $30 per performance ticket.) I feel that Cabaret is not quite ready for prime time and has a lot of bugs to work out before it can merit five stars.

It's pretty good, but it was was more warm than hot when brought out to us. They're trying to feed a lot of people on a kind of stagless schedule, so it's obvious that each dish is prepared pretty far in advance and probably sitting under a heat lamp somewhere waiting to come out. The lasagna came with a couple of very nice dinner rolls and was pretty tasty. The salmon was very well done and came with some roasted potatoes. Also pretty good. There was a risotto dish that wasn't bad but wasn't great just okay. Everyone also gets a small very basic salad. For dessert they had a very nice Bundt cake, some strawberry cheesecake, and Pondoro. All were very good. Now, for the show itself. I have been to many Community Theaters and I don't think I've ever seen Talent like this one before. They really were top notch. Very talented group. The actual building itself is a little rundown, especially the carpeting. I would definitely recommend this to other people. It's a high quality show with pretty good food recognizing the limits of what they can do with the number of people with their serving on a stagwood schedule. The service was friendly throughout

Van and Deborah were great to work with and the DJ was perfect. They have been doing this for so long that they and their staff are very accomplished and attentive. We had a wedding of just under 100 guests and everyone still talks about it. The venue was beautiful. When people entered they were greeted by passed appetizers and drinks. All of the waitstaff were dressed impeccably and also removed any empty glasses and trash. We had the bacon wrapped scallops, which were divine, as well as the lamb kabobs. There was a third, but I cannot remember what it was. Regardless, I was not disappointed. For the meal we had a served buffet and they called people by table. I was initially apprehensive about this, but it went quickly and everyone was satisfied. We offered the roasted chicken and the prime rib. My mother's friend's husband still talk about the Prime Rib. We also had roasted potatoes and a rice pilaf. Everything was delicious. For drinks there was ice tea, water and Coke soft drinks. We elected to have a wine and beer bar, but in the middle of the reception (I believe because the size of people who attended was smaller than expected) they opened it up to a full open bar. The DJ was perfect and allowed the timing of the reception to be run efficiently without us being rushed. After my husband and I left, my mother told me that the staff was very efficient at wrapping up the cake as well as all of the presents, so she was able to enjoy the wedding without needing to clean up or get the family together afterwards. For NOVA and the DC Metro area, this place is a hidden gem and complete bargain. You get the glamor and prestige without the $50K price tag.

For dinner on our first night, we opted to give Brocks Riverside Grill a try and we were not disappointed. Our waitress, Mckewen, was super friendly and helpful with both ordering selections when both of us have Shellfish allergies and later pairing our entrees with wines. For starters, we ordered drinks. My wife ordered a glass of Chardonnay and I ordered a Spicy Margarita. We shared an appetizer of Crispy Brussel Sprouts and bread rolls that came with a delicious oil and garlic dipping sauce. The main dining area was sparsely attended by other dinner patrons, with large windows to one side overlooking the river. For entrees, my wife selected the Roasted Beet Poke Bowl which she described as "light and refreshing" and I ordered the 16-oz Marinated Ribeye, cooked to Medium along with sides of mixed Seasonal Vegetables (sliced Zucchini & Squash) and Redskins Mashed potatoes with an order of mushrooms to go on top of the steak. I also ordered a nice glass of Merlot wine to go with it. The portions were generous, and the entrees perfectly prepared, and very tasty. If there was any fault at all, it was that the ribeye was a little too laden with a ring of fat rather than simply marbled, but otherwise no complaints. For dessert, I ordered a slice of Key Lime Pie and my wife ordered Crème Brûlée. Both were appealing to the eye and each bite beckoned us to take another bite. It is certainly someplace we would go to again.

We both got a salmon salad and it was a nice large portion that was full of flavor. Would definitely stop back. Might need to get the fried chicken sandwich next time!

Growing up in a h hospitality hom, i can easily say the quality is there. Everything is made from scratch. Our server was so sweet and kind. Helpful with the choices & decisions at crunch time. I got the beer battered fish (for 18, I would have liked 2 pieces of fish) bbu t the entire fillet was crispy and i had to let out cool down when th get brought it out. My boyfriend had the Shepards pie. (He is never very responsive with food but he raved about this to the point that we asked to talk to the kitchen.) It was hearty and flavorful. Really yummy beef gravy on top. l love Brussel sprouts and these had sweet Thai chili sauce and bacon bits (a house made recipe). I could have made that my entire meal. The brownie sundae was super moist as well. During the meal, it was a really good portion amount (at first I thought it was small) but it was spot on. If there was a downside I'd say the alcohol was a little more expensive then I would have expected, but that would be about it. I definitly feel like we've found a hidden gem. If you want high quality Irish comfort food. This is definitly the best one I've ever found. I wish I had taken more pictures but it was so good, by the time we thought about posting this review,, we had eaten most of it already.
