My daughter and her dad, and I, ate an early dinner at Grass Rootes Saturday afternoon. We were seated quickly and with a smile. Appetizer: lamb lollipops (3), delicious. Very tender. Entrees: daughter-bacon cheeseburger w/fries. Her dad- 1 lb of Cajun Shrimp. Me. Southwest Salad with a big Salmon added for extra $10. It was worth it and we all agreed, I scored the best dish at the table. It was delicious! (Said everyone). The waitresses were very attentive. So much so, we had 3 different waitresses asking for our order once already ordered. 3 waitresses asking do we need anything else. 3 waitresses asking if we're good. After we paid, another waitress came over and asked us if we were ready to pay. We dismissed the confusion and waved off all the drama but really, though, every waitress who addressed us everytime, was a Lot, all of those women, everytime, had smiles on their faces and were happy that we were good to go. We are new to Culpeper and decided to check out Grass Rootes for Sunday brunch. It was a nice, cozy spot for a rainy day. Zack and Marissa were so kind and welcoming and provided such attentive service! We enjoyed the delicious fried chicken & egg biscuit sandwich and veggie omelette. The French bubbly they have by the glass was so good, too! We can't wait to come back to try dinner and also check out live music in their basement pub. read more

I really want to like this place but after our last experience, I just can't. My husband and I were out on our fist date night in over a year... we were having a great time, our waitress was super sweet... the drinks were flowing .. one old fashioned, two old fashioned ... you get it.. My husband ordered a steak and for the price, wish we were wondering if we should have just gone to Piedmont across the street.... It should be noted that we don't usually EVER dare send anything back .... But I persuaded my husband to send the steak back since he asked for medium rare and it came out well done.. if you're paying close to $60 for a steak, you should enjoy it!! Our waitress is overly apologetic and we tell her it's not her fault, don't worry, we don't mind waiting... we get the new steak and it's perfect! So now for the complaint ... the next old fashioned we get AFTER our new steak gad been cooked.... I kid you not ... it looks like they've taken all the trash from the bar and dumped it into his cup ... there are chewed up orange peels, a balled up straw wrapper, the liquid was cloudy and who knows what else was in it ... it looked absolutely horrible. It looked nothing like the first (3) we ordered.. Our only thought was possible retaliation for sending back the steak? When the waitress brought the drink, she kept apologizing which at the time I thought she was still apologizing for the steak but in hindsight I think she was apologizing for the drink because she knew it was not right ?? We were pretty turned off by that incident and at that point were certainly not going to mention it to anyone. Just won't be going back. ‍ read more

Stopped by Grass Rootes on a Friday afternoon and everything we had was really great! We started with the antipasto board to share which was a great blend of cheeses and a couple meats. The pickled(?) carrots were a great touch! I had a bowl of the chicken tortilla soup of the day along with the Caesar salad. I loved the salad's bread crumbs. I'm pretty sure they were made from rosemary bread, and that crunch was amazing! My mom got the Reuben special and said it was delicious, too. Definitely a solid spot if you're looking for a great lunch around town. Can't wait to go back for dinner soon. read more

How the mighty have fallen. This once great jewel in the crown of Davis Street, is now but a shadow of its former self. If you are craving the great service and food of the past, beware! You will not find it here. The owners of this place need to have a serious come to Jesus moment with their staff! The Burrow is nothing more than an obnoxious dive bar which serves as nothing more than gathering place for the bartender's friends. The attitudes of the bar staff are just plain crap! If I could give more stars I would! Yes it's that good! First off, I travel for work so I see a lot of restaurants in a lot of places. That being said, this place is one of the best. I had the ribeye that was cooked to perfection, my wife had the crab boil and it instantly became her favorite boil she's ever had and our appetizer was the ahi nachos which were phenomenal as well. The service here is truly impeccable. The bartender and our waitress, Marissa, always greet us with such genuine hospitality. We only visit a few times a year, yet they remember us like we're regulars that's real service. I'm not sure what the previous reviewer experienced maybe just a bad day, which happens in this industry (I say that as someone who owns restaurants in Northern VA). Not every day is perfect, but consistency matters, and I can only speak from my experience. Helanna and Marissa have never disappointed. They consistently bring great energy, charm, and quality service every time we visit. Keep it up, ladies! I also appreciate that the owners have preserved the Culpeper charm. The rustic feel of the building is part of what makes this place special. It stays true to the town's character, which is refreshing with so much new development coming in. read more

After a long day of window shopping in Culpeper, I was starving and decided to try this place--and wow, what an incredible experience! Even though I was dining alone, the staff made me feel completely at ease. They were so attentive, checking in just enough to ensure I had everything I needed without interrupting my quiet time. Every time I ran out of bread, they had more ready within minutes--it was like they were reading my mind! And the food? Absolutely amazing. The mushroom ravioli with shrimp was out of this world--every bite was truly delicious. I live over an hour away, but I'm already debating when to make the drive again. This place is truly a gem, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area (or even outside the area--it's worth the trip!). read more

First time here even though Km a Culpeper native. This place has amazing service, great ambiance and the food was amazing! Had the Oysters as an appetizer and they were so fresh and the breading was seasoned well, the homemade remoulade sauce was a perfect combination. For dinner we both had the 16oz ribeye. This has become one of our favorite hang out spots for dinner and a drink. Lunch or dinner time, it doesn't matter, the service and space is always amazing. From the vibe inside to the music (once the musician played a the Jurassic Park theme on the piano and I just knew it was the place for me), we enjoy our time at this restaurant. Servers and the chef are always willing to accommodate my dietary restrictions. For example, the shrimp mushroom ravioli dish was always a favorite, but I developed a shrimp allergy. They're willing to swap the shrimp out for other proteins so I can still enjoy the dish. Some other highlights are the tuna wonton nachos, fried carbonara spaghetti, steak Caesar salad (generous flavorful portion), and the fig and prosciutto flatbread. Ok. Ate upstairs, service was good. Food, absolute crap for 3 out of 4 of us who ate. They did make it right on one meal that was horrid. Then went down to the Burrow to meet one of the most rude, off-putting bartenders I've ever met. Younger brunette. I added a comment to a Facebook post, letting them know; they deleted it and blocked me. A friend who was there that night said the same thing, and they blocked him as well. No "we'd love to make it right". They know they suck and they'll prey on people who haven't gone there. BEWARE. This place was better with different owners. read more

We had a 7pm reservation, got there early and they were able to accommodate us. We had a service dog and they were very accommodating with him as well and didn't give us problems like many places do. The ambiance is great, cute horseshoe shaped booths, as well as bench seating with pillows, brick walls, just a great vibe. Loved the Anthony Bourdain quote as soon as you walk in. Server was very friendly and informative with specials. We got the shrimp ravioli, the whipped feta with honey and pistachios, the rib eye steak and two cocktails. The wait staff explains the specials and the regular menu items if there is a question. The staff is very attentive throughout the meal. Typical comments from my guests are, "Wow! I went here with my fiancé and his family for the Mother's Day weekend, we were visiting from out of town. Being Mother's Day and prom night, it was quite busy. We made a reservation for 6 people, and we were seated fairly quickly and on time. The staff were friendly. It was a little loud, so it was hard to hear from the other side of the table. Although it was loud, they had live acoustic guitar music which was super nice and fit the theme. The doors are straight open to the kitchen, so I could see inside from my table. It was a bit distracting hearing their music playing from a speaker for the kitchen and the hustle of the cooking. The restaurant is dark, maybe a little too dark. The kitchen was bright, so it stood out even more because of the lighting. The food was okay. It was tasty, but I just didn't feel wowed by the flavor. We got the tuna poke bowl, vegetarian pasta, chicken pasta, surf and turf, pork chop, and spaghetti. The tastiest meal by far was the spaghetti. The meatballs were HUGE. The surf and turf had good sauces, and I specifically enjoyed the buttery jumbo shrimp. I was personally not a fan of the vegetable pasta, as it had not carb noodles. The hype was a little too much for this restaurant. There are far tastier restaurants in Culpeper , but we decided to take a chance in eating at Grass Rootes because in the 12 years we've been here , we have not It was Mother's Day weekend and Prom, so we gave them the benefit of the doubt about the service. The vibe was fairly nice. Dark however - pretty dark that it's hard to see the food. We got the Poke bowl which was okay. The tuna didnt taste fresh. Like you have to take a few bites to chew it. Flavor was good for the sauce but I can't forget about the fish. Veggie pasta was a joke :( Noodles and co. Zoodles basically. Chicken pasta special wasn't that bad. Just cheesed up to the max to hide the flavor. Porkchop was fairly good, just a little tough. Nice mashed potatoes. We also got the surf n turf, medium cooked. Kind of disappointed for the price, but the flavor was there. Good demi glace. Tbh the spaghetti and meatballs stole the show lol. One of my favorite restaurants I've been to in the area. We grabbed some cocktails at the bar with Helena (I think that was her name) she made awesome drinks and was really fun to chat with. We were seated at our table and ordered the ribeye and shrimp and mushroom ravioli, it was cooked to perfection. Also, this restaurant is really cool looking with a fire place and exposed brick, it's just a classic beauty. I can't say enough good things about this place. My wife and I rolled in around 2:15 on a Sunday afternoon for a couple of drinks and a bite to eat. We didn't realize they closed at 3 on Sundays...and you'd never tell it by the way we were treated. The staff was so gracious and accommodating...they couldn't have been more pleasant! When I realized they were going to be closing at 3, I apologized for running up against it. They thanked us for being there and asked if we wanted more drinks. So pleasant! Then there was the food...wow! My wife had a breakfast flatbread that she loved. I had the steak and duck eggs...amazing. I asked for the steak to be rare and they prepared it exactly how I wanted! Stopped in for lunch today and had a fantastic experience. We sat outside on the back deck area which was decorated with a variety of plants and flowers- the overall decor and atmosphere was super chill both inside and out. To start we ordered the charcuterie board to share. It had a great assortment of cheeses, meats, and pickled items. I think we could have made a meal from that alone! For mains my boyfriend ordered the pulled pork with a side salad, and I got one of the specials (ahi tuna over pad thai noodles with avocado, bell peppers, and a super yummy sauce). Both our entrees were plated nicely, had generous portions and were absolutely delicious. The service was also great- really attentive, friendly staff. My family enjoyed dinner at Grass Rootes last night. This place has a wonderful vibe with its exposed wood beams and brick walls, a fully stocked bar, a local musician playing guitar, and ownership and staff that were outstanding! I had the ribeye prepared medium rare (cooked perfectly) with a side of the best mashed potatoes I've had in a long time. My wife had the pork tenderloin which was also absolutely delicious! Extraordinary! I've been a fan of Grass Rootes under Andrew's ownership. My wife and I revisited there last night under Kelly's stewardship. We were NOT disappointed! I had mussels and pasta, and my wife the rib-eye steak. Everything was perfectly prepared. The service was attentive without being obtrusive. I met Mark, Andrew's brother, helping Kelly with the place. Amazing. So, would the review end there? Not so fast m'friends. We learned last night that they were offering a Sunday Brunch! So we had to try it out. I had steak and duck eggs. Done to utter perfection... Of interest, my wife can't abide the slightly sulfery smell of hen's eggs, but she tried the yolk of the duck egg which has none of that, and was just creamy and delicious. Finally some eggs my wife enjoys! It is expensive. But you get EVERY PENNY you pay for. If you want fast food, by all means, there is plenty to be had. But if you're looking for a memorable meal, in a beautiful, intimate (and fire-warmed) setting, Kelly's Grass Rootes is where you've got to go. We'll be back soon... Hungry for more. read more
