We got our first piano recently from the Walnut Creek Music Exchange. Before we made this purchase, we visited a few piano shops and explored online listings. We ended up going with Walnut Creek Music Exchange for a number of reasons. First of all, their price is highly competitive. We purchased a used piano. The price offered was very good for a super well maintained used piano (they certified it before putting it on the floor). They also have a 10 year trade up program that we may apply every dollar that we spent on this piano to trade up for a different piano within the next 10 years, as long as the second piano is at least 2 times the price of the first piano. Their moving cost is super affordable, about 25% the price compared to other piano moving companies. Secondly, customer service is excellent. Store manager Carson blocked out one hour to spend with our family and patiently explained each piano to us. He even played songs on a few pianos that we were interested in so we could hear difference of the sounds from each piano brand. Lastly, their professionalism is unbeatable. The piano came within 2 days after purchase, tuned! They also gave us a free voucher to have the piano tuned again whenever we like within one year! Disclaimer: I am musically challenged and know NOTHING about pianos! All I know is they play pretty music and cost a lot of money, but we sold our daughter's piano before moving to California so we "had" to buy a new one. We walked into Music Exchange to look at their used upright pianos. We were immediately blown away by their large selection of new and used grand and baby grand pianos, upright pianos, and digital pianos. Of course some pianos costed upwards of $45,000 but others were very affordable between $1,000 - $5,000. Salesman Buddy showed us several affordable options and he truthfully told us the one we fell in love with was badly out of tune and offered to have it tuned for free before we made a final decision. As I was writing down my contact information for him, my husband and daughter fell out of love with the old piano and in love with a brand new digital piano which was priced $ 3,000 below retail price!!! No, Buddy didn't tell me this price difference we knew it as it was the new version of the old digital we just sold and did our homework lol The piano was delivered with white glove service to our house in less than 24 hours after purchase and now my house is filled with beautiful music again. read more

I am shocked to see so many positive things written on here about Carson Julian (the manager of this store), as my shopping experience with him this afternoon was THE WORST. I went in interested in buying a used upright piano, and right out of the gate he told me it was a waste of money to buy a used piano and all but refused to sell me anything other than an electric piano. After repeatedly saying that I wasn't interested in that, he walked away and stopped helping me. On the way out he admitted that had just sold most of their used pianos (likely the reason that he fed me so much BS at the beginning about used pianos not being good). He gave me the impression that I was not worth his attention because I was not the usual Walnut Creek demographic - I'm young and was not looking to spend a lot of money. If you're looking to buy something on the lower end, I would not recommend this store. After this experience, I left and drove down to Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland. I had the exact opposite experience - so understanding, helpful, bigger inventory of used pianos, and I bought a great one. Highly highly recommend Piedmont Pianos instead if you're looking for a cheaper used instrument. read more

I was shopping around for either a standing piano or a used mini grand piano. I finally met a second hand Samick mini grand piano made in Korea, 1992 during liquidation sale. Its sound was the best for that price. It has some scratches but didn't bother me. The sales person was very helpful for arranging delivery and good advice on how to take care of the piano. It came with warranty so I am very relieved for getting a second hand piano from there. read more

I just bought a Yamaha C5 from this store, after visiting more than 10 piano stores in the SF Bay Area. And I can recommend Music Exchange to anyone who is interested in buying a piano. First of all, the person, Buddy Nash, who took care of me was incredibly patient. Normally, in most piano stores, their sales guys will run to you, once you start playing on their pianos, and try to send you off the store, as soon as he/she finds I am not yet 100% convinced to buy one or try to give sales pitch. At that point, I usually just run off. Buddy is actually a great performance musician so he understands we can't make a decision so fast. He let me roam around to really understand each piano. Furthermore, Buddy can help you understand how to buy a piano, explains the differences of different pianos, and even gives you some musical tips! Also Music Exchange has the best assortments, partly because it's affiliation with Yamaha who now owns Bosendorfer.Also of course, they carry Steinway. And they have upright models to the conservatory models (like C5) to the real stage models (e.g. Steinway-D, Bosendorfer Imperial). So in the long term, if you may want to upgrade your piano, there's a lot of opportunities to do so through their tradeup program! And their pianos are generally very well taken care of, even pre-owned one. I have seen Bosendorfer or Bachstein that are totally out of tune or keys don't come back or with all the wear and tear in other stores. You wonder if technicians can simply fix them or they have more fundamental issues. In Music Exchange, all the instruments are really in good shape, ready to go. Finally, Music Exchange actually has 5-6 stores in the SF Bay Area, so their inventory is huge. I originally visited their San Jose store just to find they don't carry what I am looking for, but they found this one in Walnut Creek has exactly the one that may fit my needs. And they don't try to sell what they carry, but rather ask what you are needing. That didn't happen in any other store. So overall, it was a great experience! read more
