I've been here for several work conferences, art shows, and community events, and it always delivers. The space itself is open, light-filled, and flexible. It somehow works just as well for professional presentations as it does for creative exhibits and big cultural gatherings. There's this peaceful energy about it, like the space knows how to hold people and ideas and creativity all at once without being overwhelming. I've been to Great Salt Lake art events here that were honestly stunning. Local artists, thoughtful installations, and the kind of vibe where you run into people you know and leave feeling more connected. For work events, it's comfortable and professional but not stiff, which is exactly what you want when you're networking or presenting something important. It's the kind of place that adapts to what you need it to be. A thoughtful conference venue, a celebration space, an art gallery, a gathering place. Every time I've gone, I've left feeling like I got something out of it. Whether it was ideas, inspiration, or just a really good conversation in the hallway. Our tent location was at the blue dot on the image and the closest place I could park was at the yellow X, which was a designated handicap parking spot. (Please note: That specific parking spot is the closest parking spot to the venue's entrance; everyone else in our party had to hoof it quite a distance just to get from where they parked their car to the entrance.) 2. Incidentally, the yellow X is also where the handicap drop off was located. Apparently, those in charge of pride forgot many people with disabilities can drive on their own and will need somewhere to park. 3. There were a few points to exit the festival, but only one place to enter. Everyone was funneled through the long walkway beginning at the yellow X. There was no shade, the lines to get in were long, and it was hot. 4. There were no water stations outside of the gate and the one water station inside of the gate had a long line. There were lines for most everything and there was no outside food or drink allowed. 5. The festival provided very few places for people to sit and we were not allowed to bring folding chairs into the venue. Most people sat on the ground in the shade of the trees; however, this isn't possible for everyone to do. There were people in our group with various disabilities who were forced to suffer unnecessarily. It was already hot and people had to walk from wherever they managed to park their car to 300 E and then walk all the way back down to the blue dot, only to find they had nowhere to sit. If you are an able-bodied person who enjoys being crowded together in a venue, you would probably have fun. But if you're disabled in any way, the things I mentioned are more than minor inconveniences. Maybe the board needs more diversity?

Last night they had a special event for Valentines. Our friends talked us into going and we were…read morepretty excited to do something new. I had made reservations they had ben confirmed by email so we were set. When we arrived it was a disorganized mess, They didn't have my name, didn't know if I paid and most importantly no where to sit. I paid and they hurriedly set up a tall table for us near the band. The Jazz Band playing is called Cool Tones Jazz Band. If you see them playing go see them. I realized later this would be the highlight of the evening. After being there for an hour we finally got a salad. Another hour goes by and the Chef and organizer comes over to tell our table that they ran out of food but were fixing something else for us. No matter who I asked I could never get an answer. Finally at 10pm we were served something that looked like it had come from Costco and thawed and cooked. Wes the owner operator and Chef confirmed that was true and it wasn't eatable. He then tried to cook us Shrimp Scampi. The problem with that is the Shrimp were bad. I must admit that last night I was pretty dismayed. We were in it about $100. My mind kept flashing to all of the food we could have eaten for that price. We actually had to go to Denny's at midnight because I was beyond Hangry. Earlier I had posted about supporting Immigrant Businesses. I learned from this arduous process that Wes us a Haitian immigrant. He had talked all of his friends into helping him try to pull off this night. When he was apologizing for the 100th time I told him "it was a bad night to have a bad night." Today one day later here is my take in it. The old Supper Clubs deserve to make a comeback. A place where you can dress up and eat and dance the night away. As I sat there I thought about all the things I would do different. Hire a Professional Chef and Staff. Totally remodel the place and become internet savvy. This would take millions of dollars and clearly they were operating on a shoe string budget. The difference in each of us is they were trying their hardest and I was just sitting there thinking of ever way they should have tried. In my mind there is a big difference. Wes needs to be their Host. He has an ability to talk people into things that their Soul is not buying. Like me sitting there for four hours without food. Any other time I would have marched out demanding a refund. I'm going to stop by later this week and find Wes. Give him some support and tell him of some avenues he might explore. This event is dedicated to celebrating different cultures and backgrounds through art, performance and food. It's a one-stop shop for a multicultural delight! This festival is free to attend, although you're encouraged to bring cash for the food and art vendors. And come hungry-there are so many great food options and the perfect opportunity to try something new. There's a large stage where different performances take place throughout the event. I love hearing the different music and watching the dancers-it's mesmerizing. There's another stage closer to the library in the amphitheater that also has different entertainment-usually things like poetry readings or smaller dance groups. I like the proximity of the performer to the audience-it's a more intimate experience. Most of this event is run by volunteers, so it's definitely a community event and a labor of love.
