If you choose to work with her, do not let her refer you to Hummingbird HRD (Crystal and Brian Mansanares), as that is where everything unraveled. Jaime first helped me after a Christmas morning plumbing disaster, and at the outset, she was fantastic--quick to respond, knowledgeable, and actively engaged in creating thoughtful layouts. Because things seemed to be going well, we also hired her for additional design work in our kitchen and living room. But when she referred us to Hummingbird as the general contractor, she stepped away entirely, leaving us in the hands of an inexperienced team that led to an overpriced, incomplete, and poorly executed renovation. Where Things Went Wrong Jaime and Crystal turned out to be personal friends rather than longtime collaborators, and our home was essentially a "guinea pig project"--a fact Jaime admitted only after things had gone terribly wrong. The staggering lack of professionalism from Hummingbird resulted in months of stress, wasted money, and a home that remains unfinished to this day. After Crystal declared the project "done" (despite glaringly poor workmanship), I asked Jaime to see the state of things herself. She agreed with me that the quality was unacceptable and even apologized for how badly things had turned out. She admitted that Crystal lacked the necessary experience and recognized that we had been unintentionally used as a test project. To make matters worse, she also told me, "Wow, I didn't realize you were so detail-oriented--I would feel exactly the same." As if they thought they could get away with subpar work and I wouldn't notice--truly insulting. Jaime's Final Disappointing Choice To her credit, Jaime convinced Crystal and Brian to attempt to fix their mess, but she ultimately abandoned the project. Despite personally acknowledging all the flaws, she later sent me a completely contradictory statement: "I have every faith in Hummingbird completing the project as promised, and overall, I believe they have done an exceptional job." This project was supposed to take 4-6 weeks starting in March--it was still dragging on in November, at which point I cut ties entirely because it was no longer worth the emotional toll. To this day, our home remains unfinished and cheap-looking, a painful reminder of the stress and financial loss we endured. What We Actually Got for Jaime's Fees After paying her design fees for both the bathroom and kitchen/living room, all we truly received was: * Layout options * A recommendation for Hummingbird (which proved disastrous) * Help selecting a kitchen table and rug Had we gone with a different general contractor, I might be writing a glowing five-star review. Unfortunately, given how this played out, I cannot recommend Jaime Langer at all.

We hired Inside Stories for a large new construction home that had not yet broken ground. Before signing, they spoke extensively about helping with critical early decisions like cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, accent walls, lighting, and courtyard design, all things you need early to work with a GC, build a realistic budget, and secure a construction loan. After signing, it became clear that none of that information would be released until we paid for furniture through them. That timeline does not work for new construction. Furniture is selected last, while cabinetry, fixtures, lighting, and finishes are needed much earlier. By the time their process allows those details to be released, it is too late to be useful. Their milestones may work for small projects, but they are not structured to support large new builds. We were effectively paying for design services we could not use when we needed them. Their business model also appears heavily dependent on furniture sales. Specifications and usable documentation are withheld until furniture is paid for, creating a situation where clients are financially committed before receiving meaningful deliverables. In our case, it felt like the process was designed to trap us financially before giving us anything of real value. We paid a $10,000 deposit and an additional $15,000 design payment. When we terminated the contract after realizing the process would not work for our project, Inside Stories acknowledged they had only performed $4,950 of billable work. By their own accounting, this meant they owed us a negative balance of $20,050. However, they refused to return this overpayment, claiming they were entitled to keep it because they had supposedly provided significant "intellectual property." This is bogus in my opinion. The contract says nothing about forfeiting refunds due to IP, and what they gave us was a PowerPoint that mainly consisted of inspiration images, some provided by us and some selected by them. Regardless, it does not seem proprietary or usable to me, and it provides no real value to our project. These were just reference images meant for them to work from, not something we can build from or use. I even reverse image searched several images and found them on other websites and Instagram, not anything suggesting original IP. We cannot build from it, budget from it, or use it in any meaningful way. Even more frustrating, they admitted the work completed totaled only $4,950, based on hourly rates they set, not us, yet they still insist on keeping over $20,000 beyond that amount. Our advice: be extremely careful. Make sure milestones are tied to specific, usable deliverables, and understand that under their model, you may pay substantial amounts long before receiving information you need to move your project forward.

As first-time homeowners, we trusted the wrong people, and the results were nothing short of a financial and emotional nightmare. Initially, we worked with Jaime Langer (Mustard Seeds Interiors) after a plumbing disaster. She was fantastic at first--quick to respond, knowledgeable, and helpful in developing layouts and designs. We relied on her glowing recommendation of Hummingbird HRD (Crystal Mansanares and Brian Mansanares) as a general contractor, believing that paying a premium would ensure a high-quality result. That trust turned out to be our biggest and most costly mistake. We later discovered that Jaime and Crystal were personal friends, and our home was essentially a "guinea pig" project for Hummingbird as they attempted to enter the GC business. They were inexperienced, disorganized, and unprepared--something that was not clear until it was far too late. Major Issues We Faced: 1. Lack of Coordination & Communication: Despite paying thousands in design fees, there was no proper sit-down to review the overall design. Pressing decisions were thrown at us last-minute via text, often during dinnertime, creating frustration, chaos, and a a total lack of cohesive vision. 2. Delays & Poor Planning: Our chosen shower tile--finalized in February--was not ordered on time, causing delays and forcing last-minute changes that compromised the vision. 3. Botched Layout & Installations: Hummingbird failed to move the primary bathroom door as expected, disregarding the approved layout plan (luckily I happened to stop by before the sheet rock went in). The wrong bathtub was ordered, adding further complications and extending the timeline. 4. Sloppy Craftsmanship: Shower tiles were installed with more than 10 chipped pieces, and Crystal tried to gaslight us into believing it was part of the tile's "handmade" nature (it was not). The tub spout remains crooked, and the powder room light was installed 3 inches off-center--something they initially refused to correct. 5. Cheap, Mismatched Materials: I was blindsided with metal trim edging for the shower--something never discussed, and it clashed terribly with our upgraded fixtures. Crystal later admitted she never saw it in person and let the installer pick it. 6. Shower Glass Installation Deception: Crystal set up a meeting with DGI to review metal finishes but neglected to tell them they weren't actually the vendor chosen by Hummingbird. This deception wasted our time and caused embarrassment 7. Structural & Finishing Mistakes: Our ceiling is now cracked after the shower glass was installed due to a bowed ceiling (installed by Hummingbird). Electrical outlets and light switches were placed incorrectly, installed crooked, and several lacked covers entirely. 8. Expansion of the Project--With More Failures: o Hardwood floors turned out well, but the new doors are worse than the originals, with uneven edges and visible damage. o Baseboards were installed with gaps, making them look cheap. o A rushed three-time repainting attempt still left us with subpar results. o Plumbing glue stains in the basement were lazily painted over instead of properly removed, and are still visible. 9. Horrendous Accountability: Crystal was rarely on-site (we have cameras), consistently (always) brought her toddler to meetings / during construction, and ultimately, she left much of the project to the installer, who was nice but not capable of delivering the high-end design we paid for.
