I recently went to MysteryByte because I needed an extension cord for my PSU. Fairly simple, I called ahead of time, they put it aside for me and I told them I would pick it up in a jiffy. The problem was, once I arrived on site, I got a look at the cable and noticed that it was potentially a little shorter than what I was looking for and asked if it would be okay if I brought my PC in so I could eyeball the length in front of my tower, which I just happened to have on me in my vehicle. The gentleman told me no problem. The problem was that when I came back to the store, I was greeted by two other men who started telling me sardonically "don't you have some place else to do this? Just buy the cable and take it back." I responded essentially just saying that I had asked the other employee if this was okay and that it was just easier rather than buying a cable, going to the car and checking, and potentially returning it. The man with no mask and the stained t-shirt ultimately just kept repeating himself asking me if I had some other place to do this at and that I shouldn't be doing it there, et cetera while the others stood around. I found them to be incredible unprofessional and overly aggressive. I told him I would just go to another store and walked out. You would think for a store so filthy and sparse, their customer service would be exceptional but I will not be returning to this store and will only speak of this incident where I felt incredibly put off. I have had 5 MysteryByte computers built and have purchased many parts from them over the years. Their knowledge and service is stellar. They would take as much time as needed to talk about the pros/cons of different setups or to speculate about potential problems and offer solutions. I have never felt rushed or pressured. Just today, they spent over an hour trying to help me transfer data from an old laptop hard drive to a new solid state drive which I intended to buy from them. Unfortunately, the original drive was unreadable, despite their best efforts. I offered to pay for the hard drive that they had opened from the packaging, and the time their tech spent on it, but he just said they do not charge when these things do not work out. These are talented, knowledgeable, and kind people. Highly recommended. read more

I've been going to MysteryByte off and on for several years now after a friend recommended them to me. Got my last computer through them, and am awaiting my new one that will be ready soon. Overall, great computer shop. You can get some pretty decent custom-built PCs for fair prices here, and communication with the staff is A+. They're also very friendly, helpful, and social in person. The overall atmosphere of the shop is really welcoming, especially with the super friendly store cat that they've got. It was hanging around me being really cuddly one day when I had to wait a few minutes since the guy at the counter was dealing with another customer. I don't think it's any secret that I'm all for admitting when I'm in over my head. That was me when trying to figure out how to order a new, custom-built computer. When you don't even understand the Google search results, it's time to call in the experts. The guys at MysteryByte were fast, responsive, informed, and more than willing to simplify the process for me. They understood what I was looking for, offered up great recommendations including rationale for any decisions that could have gone one way or another, and even got it in ahead of schedule. Pricy? Yes. Completely inconvenient to get to? OH YES. But who cares. They did their job better than I expected and I'm thankful for 'em. Hands down the best computer shop in Halifax. Quick painless service, and very nice people working there. I always go here with both my computers to get them upgraded or build new PCs and always recommend them to my friends. Their shop is small but don't let it deter you.. they know what they're doing. I needed a wireless adapter for my desktop, went in, pet the cat for a minute or two until someone came down, said I needed a wireless adapter and that I didn't care if it was USB or PCIe, whichever was cheaper. Hooked me up with a USB dongle for $22 which was a better price than I had seen online, nevermind the fact I didn't have to pay for shipping or wait for it! Would recommend, only qualm is parking is limited but that's to be expected in Halifax. read more

I bought a custom gaming PC from MysteryByte in Jan 2013 that has been working great until the video card died suddenly last week. I called MysteryByte to get their advice, and they told me the card was still under the manufacturer's warranty. The owner invited me to bring the whole PC in and they would look at it for no charge. I was extra lucky that they just happened to have an identical card in stock. They installed their working card in my PC, kept the dead one to ship away for warranty replacement, and sent me on my way without charging me anything. What more could I ask? read more

Worst customer service I've ever had with any business in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is a clear example of why local businesses are failing. I inquired about the posibilty of price matching for an SSD, seems like a simple request, they say yes they do, I mention the ssd, the price on amazon etc. He then immediately gets mad and starts berating me about how "this isn't California" and the prices aren't that low, rather then listen to me, he talks over me and interrupts until I finally get mad and tell him how awful his customer service is, and tell him I know he probably can't match the price, but for the convenience and buying local I understand there's a premium, I don't mind that. This asshole was hearing none of it, he then goes off again about how it's just not possible and he'll pay x amount of dollars for an item so he can't sell it at y. When in realty the price he was saying he's buy them at was more then the amazon price, so to me you must be stupid to pay more then the price someone random person is able to on amazon, how is this even possible? Unbelievable, I would have paid the premium and would have left with an SSD, however I said f*** them and bought it on amazon, because of how awful this service was, I wish there was a 0 star, worst type of people, I'll make it a point to tell people not to go here anymore. read more
