We headed out on Thursday morning for the 5 day drive back home to Oakland California, taking a northern route to stop by Badlands National Park and Mt Rushmore. By Saturday evening, we arrived in Cheyenne WY, where we spent the night. After looking at the weather forecast for the Sierra mountains, we decided to pick up some chains for our tires at the local Walmart in Laramie, WY, before continuing on our trip. On Sunday morning, as we got close to Laramie on I-80, the engine started sputtering, misfiring and losing power. The EPC light kept flashing and it was clear something was wrong. I was able to make it to the local Walmart parking lot, though the car stalled a few times on the way there. After I parked, I was unable to generate any power beyond idling, and the car continued to stall. I consulted yelp and google to find a local mechanic, but none of the local shops were open on Sunday. I saw a listing for Rise High Auto Repair, which described itself as a mobile mechanic company. I called the number and spoke with the proprietor, Chris on the phone. He said he could be there in 35 minutes and would diagnose the problem for $125 ($95 diagnostic fee and $35 travel fee) in the Walmart parking lot and that the $95 diagnostic fee would count against the repair cost if we opted to have him repair the car. When Chris arrived in his mobile truck, he was incredibly friendly and he got straight to work. He recommended replacing the spark plugs and wires, thinking that would address the issue. After finishing the repair and clearing the codes, he suggested I drive around in the parking lot a few times to reset the computer to see if the repair addressed the issue. However it did not. I made it about 200 feet and the initial problem persisted. He said he thought it could be an issue with the throttle, which he said he could clean, but if it needed replacement, I'd need to spend a couple of days in Laramie, because it was unlikely any of the local part shops would have the necessary part in inventory. He took apart the throttle, cleaned it out, and reset the computer. We decided to take our chances and see if we could make it to Salt Lake City and then Elko NV, which was about 625 miles away. The car ran well all the way to Elko. We got to Elko around 10:30 pm, and I noticed I had a text from Chis checking in on us to see how the trip was going. On Monday morning, we continued our trip back to Oakland and arrived safely with no further issues. Again, I had a text from Chris on Monday, to see if we made it home ok. All told we drove over 1100 miles. I can't say enough about Chris. First, he was incredibly competent. I could tell from speaking with him that he is extremely knowledgeable about automobile repairs. Watching him work, I felt like I was watching a surgeon. He made all of the repairs in the Walmart parking lot and he worked efficiently and thoroughly to ensure that he was able to repair the car. It was cold and windy on this particular Sunday and he invested over 4 hours of his time fixing our car outside. Finally, he was incredibly honest and kind. He cared enough to check in on us until we got home, something he really didn't need to do. I unequivocally recommend using Chris and his company if you find yourself in Laramie WY.

Try to keep this from getting TLDR. I guess the short story is this place did great work…read more I bought a used car years ago, it had a "performance" muffler on it. After putting up with the loud exhaust for a couple years, I was done. I went to a place that was closer to me at the time, and they put a stock muffler on it. Still had a little rumble, but told not much to do about it. Job well done, or so I thought. Few years later, I start noticing a rattle on startup. It's not bad, it goes away after warm up. I carry on. Few months ago, it gets worse, still goes away, but I think I might have a transmission issue. Friend of mine I'm telling about it said he had the same thing once and he had a broken bracket on his exhaust system. I get under and see this mess. Cracked welds, pipe separated from the muffler. Also, they didn't install a mounting support above the pipe, probably one of the reasons it broke. Well, not going back to that place. I did a little research, and Big Johns looked like the best place. Little out of my way, but I wanted to make sure this time things went better. I believe John was there when I arrived, and had another guy who worked with him. I mentioned the whole problem, plus said it was still a little loud. He suggested a slightly bigger muffler, plus he installed a bracket support where the other place hadn't, and also redid the other two supports that were in place. The new supports were obviously more heavy duty. It did the trick. Also, I noticed my car was running better and a couple of issues had gone away. Car is now running like it did before all this started, and it's the quietest it's ever been. Charged me $200 and it was well worth it. At this point, I'm pretty happy. Be aware that when I was there, they only work on one car at a time. I don't know if he utilizes the other garage bay, but they work fast. It took maybe 30 minutes or so to do the job.

Now I want to upgrade my muffler on a 6.2L GMC Denali and this is the only place I will go.

What makes this a horrible experience is how this dealership is treating me as a post sale customer and with my car title. They apparently had issues getting my car title (which they never mentioned, I only found our after submitting a request to get a copy of a title myself after 2-3 months not getting one) I was denied getting a title from Texas DMV saying Family Toyota submitted the wrong title when applying for my title, and they didnt send the most recent one. Now when I call, they just keep putting me on hold until I just get hung up on or sent to voicemail. Its soon to be 5 months from when I purchased my car, and I still have no car title in hand. The Texas DMV even mentioned my title on this clean car might get branded because of their hiccups, but I couldn't even tell if that's true since I don't have a title. Kind of frustrating to spend dozens of thousands of dollars with a company who clearly doesn't care about their clients once you take the car keys and submit payment. I was recommending and buttering this dealership to my colleagues and friends in Texas, but definitely will have to stop doing that.
