Walked in without any intention on buying. We weren't greeted right away, but after walking around a few minutes a sales lady walked over, greeted us and apologized for a late hello. Jo, quickly made conversation, asked about our trip, mainland home and we realized she grew up about a mile from our home in California! My 10-yr old daughter asked for earrings, and I hesitantly replied a gently No. However Jo, offered affordable and adorable plumeria earrings. Jo treated us kindly, as if we were buying the most expensive jewelry in stock. She took her time showing us different styles and even gave my daughter a pouch to put away her earrings. I must say we just love our bands, my fiance got the gold maile band and I had got the white gold maile band they are gorgeous. I had to custom order my size 13 1/2 since they don't carry it in stock. Mary the sales associate was very helpful, she was the one who showed us the maile rings in which they were beautiful on there own and then she told us the meaning of the maile in which right then we fell in love with the rings. So, the one thing I prize most highly as a collector is honesty. I walked down Ali'i Drive in Kona Kailua looking for opal stones and opal jewelry with my partner. We had been to 4 or 5 stores and purchased 2 pieces already at another shop when we came to Na Hoku. The woman we talked to was very well spoken and knew the history of the shop and showed us some very beautiful and expensive opal pieces that were gorgeous. But then she ruined it. She launched into a story about Hawaiian Opals.........How beautiful and magical....and I quote her...."Something about the lava on the island creates the most beautiful opals here." This is where she lost me. I have experienced this in tourist trap stores before, unscrupulous salesperson who thinks I'm young (I'm 42 but look 25 in a tee shirt) and dumb (I'm always happy and smiling) NO OPAL COMES FROM HAWAII! None!!!! 90% come from Australia and the rest from idaho, california and ethopia.... not Hawaii. To lie to a customer to make a good story and sell the piece based on lies is very unethical. This was no mistake of a young and unexperienced sales clerk this was a seasoned older woman, a manager...could ahve even been one of the owners. Shameful, not a care for the future of a customer or relationship. I live like 5 min. from the shop...I'm a part time local for 20 years, my famiy has a house really close to their shop even. They even lie to the locals.......damn. Please go in here and look at opals and then leave. ; ) Do not buy from Na Hoku's lying salespeople. you'd think in 93 years they would have developed some scruples. It's all about trust..And Buyer Beware. For years, I've been a fan of Na Hoku and purchased several lovely pieces of jewelry. I have a beautiful pearl ring with an unusual leaf design setting and, of course, the requisite "slipper" necklace that I wear like a talisman. But, my very favorite pieces are the gaming counters that are sold in this store. They are antique, unique and a conversation starter. What a fascinating history comes with these dainty mother-of-pearl pieces! I first purchased an oval ring, then a large round pendant and this Christmas, treated myself to a rectangular pendant. (My husband was thrilled with the Christmas gift "he" bought for me!) And this is where the story turns sad. When I examined the pendant more closely, I realized that the counter had been CUT IN HALF! The piece is missing half the sun on one side and the rest of the initials on the other. I'm no antique expert, but I DO know that when you alter an antique it loses its value, and that's what is happening to the gaming counter jewelry at Na Hoku. They are taking the counters and cutting them to make more jewelry pieces instead of preserving the value by designing around them. What a shame --and truly false advertising. The sales people tout the antiquity and uniqueness of this jewelry and that's what first drew me to the counters. That cut off half piece has no intrinsic or historical value anymore. So, finally, I did my research-- checked on line, went to various sites that describe the history, even went on EBay where I found many lovely counters for sale. Buyer beware. If you are considering purchasing a gaming counter at Na Hoku, examine it closely and decide if it's worth the cost. Beautiful unaltered counters can be bought for well under $50 on EBay and you can have a real, undamaged antique set by your favorite jeweler. read more
