I've used TSJ just last month to have my Mother's wedding ring joined back together after EMT's had to cut ring off finger. Also had a diamond replacement done because it went missing. The jeweler replaced missing diamond with a stone that just matched the others so well can't tell what stone was replaced. I also had a 14k gold chain made to a 22" from a 26 inch chain. Service was fast and cost of repairs are very reasonable too. I also sold 4 inches from the chain to them for a good price. I paid $100 to have a ring enlarged for myself. After a while, the enlarged portion of the band fell out, thus the ring was unwearable. I took the ring in and the staff (and later also the owner) basically said "shit happens" and would charge me another $100 for the repeat repair. First class staff, skill set, precision, quality craftsmanship. I'm so grateful that I found these people. Everyone is so super friendly and professional. I had a family heirloom piece that needed repaired - my grandfather's 100 year old 18K white gold, 1carat diamond ring. The backside of the band had broke. I took the opportunity to also have it resized a bit bigger. They did a fantastic job! But about 3 months later, the band broke again in the same place. So I took it back in for them to have a look. They totally stand by their work and told me it was under warranty and decided they could repair the band with a whole new piece of gold - basically rebuilt the ring free of charge! I've also had them make some custom professional healing tools for me. They are masters of the craft here and can pretty much do anything. There is a piece of history that always accompanies us --- the watch! So I'm relatively new to wearing watches. I only got my first ones a few years ago and didn't have to worry too much about them until very recently when the battery in one of them died. I went the extremely lazy route for a little while and literally just wore a dead watch around for a few days (#NoShame), buuuuut eventually I decided I should probably get its battery replaced. Enter Thundering Seas Jewelers. The watch in question had been ordered on Amazon so I didn't really have a default place to go back to for a new battery. So I took to Yelp to figure out what to do. Certain places around town, such as Macy's, won't even touch your watch if you didn't purchase it from them. It seemed ideal to find an independent business for the job of a battery replacement. Thundering Seas is exactly that and had a very good track record judging by their Yelp rating. One IMPORTANT thing to note if you look at the Google Maps location of the shop through Yelp is that it takes you to where they used to be located. They're now located close by in the collection of restaurants and shops off of Manono Stree [where Miyo's, Hawaiian Style Cafe, etc. are in]. The address on Yelp is correct though. Once I was able to figure out where the shop is, I was met with a wonderful experience. The people who run Thundering Seas were extremely friendly and helpful through the entire process. They explained how the replacement would work and how I could get a warranty on the battery to get it replaced any time in the next year, three years, or for the entire lifetime of the watch. They even offered to open the watch up to check if the insides were of a high enough quality to even be worth replacing the battery. From beginning-to-end, it was a great experience and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing work done on a watch at the very least. I haven't had any experience with them as far as jewelry goes but I feel pretty confident in saying that it would be just as good. Two thumbs up! read more

Simple process. I had my necklace's clasp broken. Went there, filled the form, and drop my necklace. The staff gave me expected date when it'll be done. Due to Covid, there was only one person to do the fixing of the jewelry so time frame was pretty lengthy than normal (almost a month). The place was backed up with a lot of repairs to do with only one person doing it. Other than that, simple process just had to wait to come back with my necklace. Price might be fair but I always like a good deal. So I say it's in the pricey end for me. read more

My wedding ring had to be cut off in the emergency room due to swelling from a cat bite. A 0.4 inch gap was left, which was about the right size to get over my arthritic finger joint. Thundering Seas filled in that gap and reproduced the wheat pattern on the ring so expertly that I have a difficult time detecting where the repair was made. This review is long overdue. I have been trying to find the time to leave something here but failed and I've finally sat down to do it cause it is well deserved! Thundering Seas is hands down the best jeweler on the island. My wife and I got married back in January of this year (2019) and we got mine and Lauren's wedding band both from Thundering Seas. We wanted to make a custom piece for her band so we thought it might be difficult to find the right place for the job and to express exactly what she wanted. We walked in and on the same day were able to sit down and start designing with Dallas. He was extremely professional and confident that he could make our wishes come true. Not only did he succeed in that but he also exceeded our expectations! The entire process was so easy and relaxing which is exactly what you need when you are in the midst of planning a wedding. I've gone back several times since our initial visit and quite honestly I wouldn't go to any other place for any of your jewelry needs. We stopped in here to see if they could resize it before our flight left that afternoon, and the gentleman we spoke with was extremely helpful sizing my finger, explaining what would go into resizing the ring and potential issues we may run into. If pushed, he would have hurried to size it that day (in less than 6 hours!) but helped us make the decision to wait until we returned to the mainland to avoid worry or unnecessary cost. He put a rubber tube around the band so I can continue to wear my beautiful ring in the meantime. I'm not sure that I'll ever be in Hilo again looking for a jeweler, but I would recommend anyone else to stop in here whether you're local or vacationing on the big island. Seriously the BEST! Went in to fix my bracelet walked in and a man greeted me, took great pride in making sure I was well taken cared of.. Introduced me to the other 2 workers. Said my bracelet was going to be done in a week.. It needed to be Fixed and he suggested tightening.. Mentioned there would be an extra fee if it all needed to be tightened, it didn't matter Id rather have it tight than falling apart.. I have used this business to size up rings, size down rings or buy new from - and I have not had anything but completely acceptable, friendly and open transactions over and over. I find their prices to be reasonable, their workmanship to be fine, and any issues that might occur are discussed and resolved, such as the one time the tiny chip of ruby of the eye of a dolphin ring I had worked on I noticed to be missing an hour after I had paid for the work. Dallas took the ring back in though no one could understand how that it had occurred, due to the work done being nowhere close to that part of the ring, yet Dallas insisted on putting a replacement in, free of charge. I would recommend this business to anyone and am very happy they have gotten a best business rating for 2016 and 2017. I will make sure I vote for them in 2018! read more

The owner of this business (Mr. Cate) ran a stop sign while driving a pickup truck and got into a major auto accident - t-boned my friend which left one of his hands/arms partially crippled and a totalled wrecked car and never made it right and neither Mr. Cate (driver at fault) nor his insurance paid anything whatsoever for the total loss of car (victim had no fault insurance required by state law that doesn't cover loss of his own vehicle even if he was not at fault), towing and storage fees and disposal fees, medical/rehab therapy bills, ongoing pain and suffering irritating tingling sensations shooting through his arm and hand and oftentimes periods of total numbness/lack of feeling and depression, permanent loss of work/livelihood/businesses and income (needed 2 strong energetic hands and arms to do his specialty line of work as well as regular punctuality which has been impossible due to major weakness and sleep disorders). As a result, he no longer has full mobility of one of his hands/arm even after physical therapy and is constantly under irritable pain and tingly sensations with sometimes lack of feeling/ numbness, uncomfortable and ongoing major sleep disorder feeling weak and depressed all the time, unable to find alternative work for adequate livable income to this day and can no longer to pay his monthly bills and obligations without help from a member of his family who has a fixed income even has to bring food for him to live and help pay for his monthly bills while still have many past bills in arrears of unpaid late payments due to lack of income. He can't even buy food on his own like he could before that auto wreck nor live a normal content life. He has already suffered substantial losses so far and was forced to sell the only real estate property he had left due to loss of income with lots of bills to pay and is on the verge of losing everything else he worked and saved during his lifetime for. He could no longer afford to pay for his own insurance after this accident even for the basic no fault coverage. I have dealt with Thundering Seas through three Hilo locations -- over decades. They are THE BEST. Dax and I designed a ring out of old family diamonds, which I adore. They have repaired, repurposed, or resized countless other pieces of jewelry. We bought my husband's wedding band there (mine came from my mother and they resized it)and have changed watch batteries in countless watches. Everyone in the shop is unfailingly friendly and professional, and both Dax and Dallas have wonderful aesthetic senses. After Dallas joined the business, we have mostly dealt with him (Dax is in the back, working on jewelry), and he has also become our go-to person for everything related to jewelry.
