What a lovely place! It's not a traditional pub at all. Instead, it's a small fine dining establishment that is locally owned and run. In fact I think our server was the owner, and he let us know that his wife was the cook (after we complimented our meals). Prices are very reasonable and there is a nice selection of fish and meat dishes. My husband and I shared the pork belly taco (appetizer) and the fish and chips plate. Our friend ordered the last available flank steak. Everything came out timely and was delicious! There was enough food to go around and no one left hungry. I'm really glad that our friend stumbled upon this restaurant. It was not crowded and had a lovely evening atmosphere for our last evening in town. As many have recommended I will echo their sentiment and say, be polite, say "Hei" and then head down the stairs. A few helpful hints: Ask the bartender for a menu, take a seat and then head back up to the bar to place your order. They have a pitcher of water at the end of the bar with glasses so no need to add an extra expense for bottled water. Remember on Sunday a bar or restaurant is the only spot you will get alcohol so don't think you can grab some beer at the Kiwi or Rema and drink at home/hotel. I got the herring with lingonberries which sounded weird to me but after the first bite I was sold!! I cleaned the whole plate with ease because it was so good. TOP SECRET! Its way off the tourist areas of Bergen...the only tourists in here are the ones that do extensive research before coming to Bergen...like me! Walk in. Smile at the staff working in the fancy schmancy top floor area. But walk straight for the dark doorway and down the steps to the pub in the basement. Grab a menu. Grab a table, When ready, order from one of the friendly bartenders. Keep in mind, tax and tip are already included, so its all reasonable considering its Norway: 63kr/$8.40 Aass beers...good variety and cheapest beer in a bar in Bergen. Aass!!! 138kr/$18.40 fish n chips...delicious! A bit different, but good! 188kr$25 plank steak...delicious! Probably the best deal in Norway if you're craving steak. Bartenderinas were very nice, as well as the expat Irishman bartender. The ambiance isn't much...clean, simple and dark. Food comes from the same kitchen as the fancier restaurant upstairs with full service, but those entrees start at 200+kr. I'll definitely be back if I'm ever in Bergen again. 3.5 stars. And this is a Swedish restaurant, not so much Norwegian. There were only two dishes on the bar menu that were seafood. Everything else was meat, that's when you know this isn't a Norwegian restaurant. They had the ground floor dining area and the bar down below. We went to the bar area to meet up with some new friends we made in our kayaking trip. The bar area is obviously more casual where they take your order. On the side they also had a pitcher of water and some glasses you can serve yourself. We were there on a Saturday night. It didn't look too busy even though all the tables were filled. When we ordered food, they told us the wait would be 1 hour! We're hungry so we ordered our food. The fish pot good. Steak flank was alright, it did look better in the photo than it tasted, but still OK. The fish of the day was cod and it was deliciously prepared with a dill and butter sauce, and served with perfectly steamed cauliflower & broccoli and boiled potatoes. This review is for the pub, in which you need to walk into restaurant and down the stairs. The clientele here seemed to be all locals, which was a good thing in my book. They have a very good selection of craft beer here. The food is also quite good, probably one of the better meals I had while staying in Bergen. This place was a pleasant surprise! After meandering through our hotel's neighborhood in Bergen on a mini-pub crawl, we checked this place out for dinner. We all left feeling like we had made a good choice. The establishment is divided into two floors. The street-level floor is the restaurant which has about 10-12 tables. We were told upon arriving that it would be about a 30 minute wait. We proceeded downstairs, where a basement bar awaited us. It was dark and moody. At the tail end of our first round, one of the waiters came downstairs and informed us that our table was ready. In advance of our meal, some good crusty bread with some soft and salty butter arrived. For dinner, I ordered a bouillabaise (photo included). The broth was quite flavorful, and was full of salmon, shrimp, and other seafood. There were also some pieces of celery which lent a great flavor to the dish. We got some additional bread which was put to good use in soaking up the delicious broth. My friend who ordered the salmon felt it was an excellent dish. We tried the semla, braised reindeer, and Arctic char. The Semla was interesting, and though both my wife and I would probably have preferred it hot, it was a room temperature dish. The gruyere and lamb was a nice combination and the pine shoots were a really different touch that we both liked. Refreshing! The char tasted just like salmon, with a dill butter that went well. The pumpkin sauce was more of a purée, much to my wife's excitement. We both thought it was excellent. The potato salad was a room temperature mix of potatoes and veggies. Light and not creamy/mayo based. The reindeer was my first taste of the meat and it was pretty gamey, but really well done. We are here on vacation from orlando Fl. The food was delicious. The restaurant owner and staff were very welcoming. And the owner was hilarious. Also menu in English which was very helpful. When we ordered coffee and chocolates (that the owners wife makes herself) the milk was hot so didn't cool off coffee quickly. A special touch. This bar is not obvious from the street. You have to walk through a formal-ish looking dining room to the stairs on the far wall and head down. The bar is small and was packed when we were there. We sat at the bar for a minute until we saw people getting up from their table and snagged it. For Bergen dining, we found this to be pretty affordable and each enjoyed a burger. The waiter/bartender was really nice and when he learned we were from Boston asked us how our city was faring since the Marathon. That was nice. :) Alcohol is expensive everywhere in Bergen, but husband found a decent affordable pick to enjoy with the dinner. read more

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Naboen!! We arrived in Bergen just a few hours before dinner, after a couple days on a fjord cruise. We have been in Norway 5 days in total, from Oslo to Trondheim to Bergen....and we can whole heartedly say this has been our best meal in the country. The service was so personal. Every dish we ordered (the reindeer and asparagus appetizers, and the flank steak and meatball entrees) exceeded expectations. We especially reveled in the finer touches....the herb/chive butter, the morel sauce on the asparagus, the béarnaise on the steak, the lingonberries in the meatball sauce....just wonderful. I had Mackerel with mustard spice and my wife had a vegetarian dish. Fish was really spicy and very good. Vegetarian dish was average. There's two floors at this restaurant: the upstairs which is swanky and more expensive and the downstairs which has a younger atmosphere but still the same great food. Food here is amazing. It's somewhat expensive as all Norwegian restaurants seem to be, but it tastes great. Service is friendly once you get over the fact that you have to order at the bar if you're downstairs. Beer selection is large here but also borderline highway robbery. If you're a whiskey drinker, you'll find some nice scotch offerings for cheaper than the beer. read more

What a great find! Thank you other Yelpers for sending me here. As stated by a number of other people, don't eat upstairs in the "fancy" restaurant, head downstairs to the more casual pub! It's seat yourself, order at the bar. My husband ordered the plank steak, and it was phenomenally prepared. Medium rare, perfectly seasoned and served with bacon wrapped green beans and dauphine potatoes. (Mashed potatoes that are piped and then broiled for a crispy top.) Everything was great. I had the steak sandwich. Served open face with a sorta French dressing, and pickled onions. Again, perfectly seasoned and very delicious. It was a nice portion for me, who typically over orders. The sandwich came with fries and a salad. Salad was nice, nothing fancy, fries were okay. They weren't good they weren't bad, just okay. Otherwise we were both quite happy with our meals. Bartenders are friendly, and happy to recommend drinks. For Americans traveling with out chip and pin credit cards this is how the credit card process works: 1- they show you how much the meal was on the little machine 2- you type in how much you're going to pay (this is where you add a tip) and hit the green (okay) button 3- swipe your card 4- sigh with disbelief at the amount of paper you're wasting because the US insists on using a signature for transactions. Prices are more than you want to spend but you're in Norway so this shouldn't be a surprise. We paid about 400KR ($56) for our meals, a coke and a beer. read more

You may need a reservation, and dress smart, if you'd like to eat upstairs. Since we are on vacation we walked through the front door, continue straight ahead and down the small staircase that looks like it is for service only. Downstairs the pub was half full, all Norwegians, and there was a selection of perhaps 9 or 10 unfamiliar beers on draught, many others in bottle, and I noticed a decent selection of single malts behind the bartender. We ordered the lamb dill stew for about 168 kroner and the Swedish meatballs with berries, potatoes and veggies for 110 kroner (I believe). Both were very satisfying after a day of hiking, and the beer was good too. This may have been the cheapest "real" meal we had during our stay in Norway. We also ordered a potato wedge app with three dips that would have been fine if we were just having that with the beers, but too much with the dinners. All in all this was an unpretentious, great place to sit and chat. We stayed for several hours ordering a few more beers, and were happy with our dinner. read more

It was perfectly cooked. The Swedish meatballs were great for a bit more savory dinner. I would say about the same size as the flank steak. The burger was more gamey compared to beef, but I liked that. The fish and chips were amazing cod. I think the batter left something to improve on, but the quality of the fish made up for it. This place is the epitome of a hidden gem. It looks very unassuming from the exterior, but the interior is warm, cozy and classy. The house beer, Naboenbayer, is worth a drink! We started off with the brazier oxtongue and it was served thinly sliced, carpaccio style and very delicate and flavourful. The Kalrotpuree accompanying it was very well seasoned and delicious. For mains, we had steinbit (wolf fish) served with fried potatoes, shellfish sauce and Kalrotpuree. It was buttery and rich and everything hoped for in a fish dish. The beef fillet was done to perfection- tender, juicy and never tough. The crispy potatoes were a great accompaniment. Finally, the dessert of chocolate terrine, sea buckthorn, caramelized buckthorn and banana ice-cream tested our relationship because there was a very small portion for two ravenous mouths! So the secret to this place is that you should eat at the pub instead of the top level. They serve the same food by the same chef but when you dine at the pub it's a lot cheaper! they also offer free tap water ( which never happens in Europe). I had the Husmanns-dillkjøt av lam which is the traditional dill stewed lamb. Very flavorful, tender meat and savory sauce! Portions are okay for what you pay for. The ambiance is definitely cozy but with non descript decor, you could be at any pub anywhere in the world. This was the best meal we had in Norway! Add a great selection of local beers and we were in heaven. Go downstairs to the kjelleren, the food prices are lower but just as good. Lots of Norsk beers. Kinn Bryggeri is especially tasty. For IPA lovers their vestkyst (west coast) is reminiscent of a classic Oregon IPA. The slaattol (farmhouse ale) is also a treat.
