Oldest restaurant in Bergen! Cool building and fun vibes for a big group like ours. We got to try smoked whale which was honestly pretty tasty with the lingonberry jam, sour cream, and crackers. Creamy white wine mussels were great, as was the wolffish (huge portion?!) but the seafood stew was very overcooked unfortunately. Tried others' bruschetta (very tasty) and lamb filet (decent). Potatoes dauphinoise were a little too rich to me but fries dipped in the lemony aioli that came with the stew were excellent. Service was great and everyone had a good time! Classy and elegant ambiance. They have 2 stories, first floor welcomes walk in but it's first come first serve, so when there's time a cruise ship boards, the wait can be long. The second floor is for reservations only and I recommend a reservation. It's not hard to book but do book as early as you can to get the normal time slots. I checked maybe 2.5 months ago and all the time slots for dinner were available, but a couple weeks later, only the early dinner time slots like 4pm is available. The service is nice but not frequent and the host is friendly. We were allowed to use the restroom before my reservation time. I love the menu, it carries so many Nordic traditional dishes, such as the whale steak, reindeer steak, Atlantic wolffish (catfish), deer stew, mussels, etc. We ordered the grilled reindeer steak and the pan fried wolffish. Both are beautifully plated, good portions and delicious with the right amount of seasoning. The Nordic cuisine likes to use local fruits to add sweetness to the sauce. I took out 1star because t hey are pricy. For entrees in the price range of 40-60 is fine, but when the desserts are priced at 20+, they lose the marginal satisfaction. Great location, great food. However, the restaurant lived up to its hype. The restaurant is romantic and loaded with European ambiance. This is the kind of place where you know you aren't in Kansas anymore. Lamb is something that I love, so I was happy to see it on the menu. It was incredibly good. Not gamy at all, wonderful cooked, flavorful, and tender. It was fantastic. My wife and I split the huge portion of excellent potatoes au gratin that came with my lamb. It was creamy and tasty. Norwegians LOVE potatoes, so some sort of potato dish is a requirement, I think. I mean, I did, which is why after a day of traveling to Bergen from Oslo, I desperately needed sustenance and Bryggeloftet & Stuene was on my list and near my hotel. I walked in on a Tuesday night and no, I was denied. The place was packed, but the friendly hostess took my name down for a reservation for the following day. So that's what to do here. Make a reservation if you can't get in because everyone wants to eat here. The following day during my reserved time, it was a much more satisfying experience since I ate here! The restaurant is located just across the pier and along Bryggen, and inside, it's decorated with old paintings and photos of Bergen and Norway with classic, wood furnishings all around. It takes you back to Bergen's former days, which is the charm of this place. Staff could not have been friendlier. Bryggeloftet & Stuene has traditional, Norwegian food. I ordered the wolffish, which was in season, and the fish came with veggies and a side of potatoes to however you want them made. And this is when I learned that the area prepares potatoes dauphinoise, which is like au gratin and was sooo delicious. I will not hold that against them. What I am holding against them is that this was not the best fish soup I had in Bergen. We came in for an early lunch with our toddler. We did have a reservation but it didn't look like we would have needed one. It is a very large restaurant. The servers were very friendly and provided crayons and activities for our toddler. It was a unique experience sitting looking out into the water from the other side of those famous colored walls. The menu has tons of different options that scream Norway. This was another restaurant that I had seen recommended online for places to check out in Bergen. Located next to the piers, the location is a pretty convenient one to get to. There are two levels to the restaurant, and there was plenty of space for me at lunch when I went. The waiters were very helpful and I was seated right away after arriving. I wanted to try out more of the local dishes in Bergen, so I decided to order the Langoustine here. They give you a whole plate of Langoustine to eat, which I was pleasantly surprised as it was a sizable portion. The seafood was very fresh and tasty, with juicy meat awaiting me once I cracked open the shell. Even though I just had this one dish I can imagine the other seafood dishes at this restaurant would be of similar quality. Ordered Norwegian Beers-Hansa Blonde and Nogne Southern IPA-both were enjoyed. We decided to each order an appetizer and share two entrees-really nice they were accommodating. Bergen Soup was full of shrimp, and fish dumplings-perfect for a chilly evening, the Bruschetta was different given the sliced vs chopped tomatoes-delicious and saw a few other tables ordering this one, and Scallops and Chorizo-quality vs quantity and excellent! Easily over 200 mussels, and the subs was delicious. The mussels were fresh and did not have any sand, so we would highly recommend this! We made a reservation well in advance and dined here on one of our nights while visiting rainy Bergen. This is a VERY Popular restaurant with multiple small rooms, nooks and crannies in the main dining space which is upstairs (this is where you should reserve your table-well in advance). The highly regional menu features many Norwegian dishes including reindeer loin and various preparations of (minke) whale meat. We opted for a local cod (wolf fish) and a halibut. Both were good but the cod was outstanding with a flavorful sauce and vegetables. Of course each meal came with potatoes (mashed with mine and boiled with the cod) but I think it might be possible to substitute. The first restaurant we stopped in to upon our arrival in Bergen, and this was a wonderful experience to be had for the dining and the cultural knowledge. The location is right in the heart of the Bryggen, which is one of the touristy areas, as I am one, and is convenient because it right next to all of the shopping in the area, and all the cool local shops and stores. The service here was very professional and friendly, we arrived some time between lunch and dinner, and both menus were available to order from, which gave great variety. I decided to try something new, and unusual to me, which is the "Reindeer", which apparently is a delicacy here in Norway, so I went in for it as a main. The dish came with Potatos, just regular potatoes. That wasn't particularly seasoned with anything, so it's just potatoes. The preparation looked great, the meat was very tender and reminded me of a cross of very lean steak, and almost like Duck as well. Overall it was enjoyable, I don't know if I would order it again elsewhere, but I can now say I've had Reindeer. Don't let the location fool you. Right in the middle of the Bryggen Tourist center is one of the most authentic old Bergen restaurants that you must try. Located in a classic old 20th century building, Bryggeloftet provides the classic interior to match the authentic food you will receive. I always order the classic fish soup appetizer and while I went with the Mussels this time, my wife chose a fish/shrimp dish with vegetables and a side of potatoes. You can never go wrong here whether it comes to cod or halibut dishes and while I enjoyed my tastefully prepared mussels, I will certainly go back to eating a nice piece of flaky white fish next go-round. Or perhaps I will go with the full plate of scallops as my scallop appetizer left me dying for more. We finished off the experience with the rich, fudge chocolate and raspberry dessert for me and an Apple Cobbler for my wife. A nice walk through the city followed to help make. Really enjoyed dining at Bryggeloftet for dinner! Our waitress was super friendly with explaining the menu to us as well as identifying vegetarian items for my friends. They opted to order the vegetarian lasagne and commented on the freshness of the ingredients as well as the seasoning. I personally ordered Norwegian cod which came with a creme fresh like sauce, potatoes, carrots, and a vegetable mash. The dish was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. The cod tasted very fresh and paired well with the sauce giving it some more definition. The carrots and potatoes would have benefited from a bit more seasoning though. Overall, the food was pretty good. The only issue was the service. It took abnormally longer than usual for us to get our food and check. We had to ask a few times. As one of the first to be seated but one of the last to be fed. Ambience was nice with the architectural decor and murals. The food was pretty good. Do yourself a favor and DINE HERE! Omg! I ate out a few times in Bergen, but this was the best meal I've had. The same family have been running it since 1910; that's 112 years! And I overheard that they haven't closed once minus a week during the pandemic. The MUSSELS with its magical white cream sauce is amazing and mussels are super fresh and a good size. I read that mussels are known in this area. Even if you don't like seafood/mussels, I wasn't a big fan of mussels, but these I will go for! I also got the fish soup which was also really nice. Super fresh shrimp, cod, veggies, and the sauce isn't too creamy or heavy, leaving you wanting to keep wanting to take the next bite. The light flat bread that come with it pairs with it really nicely. And, I was already full from those two entree, but I read about the chocolate cake, and oh man! I'm so glad that I did. It's by far the BEST chocolate cake I've had in my life, and I've had my fair share of chocolate cake. It's more of a very light cake and moist brownie taste, which was amazing in every bite! I thought I was full but I kept eating and eating and next thing you know, it was gone! It even made me think about getting another one, but mind you, I was already feeling full prior to dessert. The raspberry sorbet pairs with it so nicely. Hats off to the baker/chef! Such friendly and fun service too. Ivan (meaning happy and lives up to his name) from Iceland, was wonderful and my other server (I didn't get his name). The decor was really nice to admire too--the artwork of Bryggen and 3D Viking ships display. It really gives you a feel that you may have stepped back into the times--which I love. Some reviews we read said they had problems with the servers we did not experience that. The staff was friendly. Our entrees did take a while to come out. We watched the couple who was seated at the table next to us at the same finish their meal and dessert and pay their check as well as another table of four who was seated after us get their meals before we did so not sure what happened in the kitchen. Our food was just ok. Scallops were over cooked, we had better at the fish market the day before. Halibut was good but not memorable and reindeer steak was cook well. We didn't realize that the 2nd floor with a harbor view was an option since it wasn't offered and we didn't realize until after the fact that it was there. I loved the layout of the restaurant, how many different spaces and rooms there were...it was so much bigger than I anticipated. Our server was incredibly gracious and kind, and did such a great job. And our food was fabulous! We had the wolf fish, the fish soup, the deer shoulder, some of the most amazing potatoes I've ever had, and chocolate cake for dessert. At first we went to the downstairs waiting for the hostess to see us and then she said that she had no room and then told us to go upstairs when we went upstairs the hostess there said they have no room and told us to go downstairs.
