This is a tiny cozy restaurant in Bergen! We dined here for dinner and started with an appetizer along with catch of the day which was cod. I really enjoyed the cod here, it came with some great combinations - did not expect crispy potatoes to be a part of it. Very flavorful and fresh. Dessert was alright! I had the 3 course tasting menu which included a sampling of all the appetizers, picking one main, then a sampling of all the desserts!! The app sampler included the crab ravioli, pate, and pumpkin soup!! Everything was well balanced and delicious!! I chose the veal as a main. This wears perfectly cooked with a tasty jus and mashed horseradish puree! The dessert sample had a raspberry sorbet, chocolate pie with an ice cream, and a cheese tasting with a sour sauce. This is a cute and cozy restaurant! I loved that they have a three course meal, but with smaller size portions of their apps and dessert. Often times when I'm dinning the person I'm with doesn't want to split an app or dessert and I'm forced to get only one, so I was thrilled to be able to try them all. Also both parties don't have to get the three course meal so my friend was able to just get an entree. The service was a little slow. We noticed other tables getting service before us. We were not in a rush so it wasn't a big deal. The food was excellent! I enjoyed everything and would do the three course meal again. I love tartare, but can't eat a lot of it so I was so happy with the portion. I really loved all the apps and couldn't pick a favorite. The veal was perfectly cooked. Food was good, service was great, and it was an overall nice experience. I went with a King Crab concoction (can't remember the actual name) for my starter, moved on to the Venison Steak with Jerusalem artichoke, cauliflower, & potatoes which was hearty but a bit under-seasoned, and finished with a Blueberry Yogurt/Blueberry Ice Cream dessert that was a nice ending. It was good, but not exceptional. Went along expecting the place to be buzzing, but only one other table occupied. The gentleman serving our table was attentive, obviously he didn't have too many other tables to see to. The mussel soup was delicious. The menu had a small number of options, so best consult before visiting. Meal portions were on the small size, and served with an explanation of every item on the plate, obviously a nod to the tasting experiences this restaurant offers at other times. The owner was inviting and pleasant to talk to. I don't have anything negative to say, the food was tasty (though portions were on the small side) and there was an excellent choice of wines. But I wouldn't rush back as it didn't blow me away either. Probably best suited to a romantic dinner with a partner rather than a large group. read more

I enjoyed a spectacular meal at Spisekroken. The freshness and quality were the main focus while the creativity enhanced the natural goodness, just enough. I enjoyed the fresh catch of the day over roasted fennel, soft and crispy kale and potatoes (note: they can accommodate food allergies). Also the homemade yogurt with berries were outstanding for desert. It was a delight to have this alternative to the much heavier Norwegian fare. My server was very warm and kind. Our food was amazing. Best meal we had in ALL of Norway. 4. We started with their starter: husband and I had a sampler size of grilled cauliflower with amazing sauce, beach crab soup and Norwegian Salad (I didn't take a picture of the menu so I butchered this). 5. I had the chicken leg with some type of apple sauce and just delicious sides. I recommend this. 6. My husband had the veal and he loved it. 7. We had desserts. We also had a sampler version or trio version and OMG the best ever. 8. Honestly, I think their menu is seasonal so it might change next month. 9. Make a reservation. 10. The food here was one of the best meals I had in Scandinavia! This is an older restaurant, super humid when we walked in, but better where we were seated in the cave-like basement level, right in the splash zone of a dripping air conditioner and at a wobbly table. Staff put a napkin under the table and turned off the air conditioner. It stopped dripping after about 15 minutes. The bread is served with an herb butter. The veal and duck confit were both so hearty and tasty. The food more than made up for the atmosphere, which was a little dingy, but charming as an "old European" eatery. Everyone eating here appeared to be a local, which is always a good sign. read more

Went to the restaurant during our stay in Bergen. It's a nice little cozy place. The lone waiter on the ground floor ran around like a headless chicken. So I didn't want to give him a hard time but the service could have been better. Food was good, not great. The dessert could have been a little more interesting. An intimate restaurant near the city center, but tucked away from the main crowds. Ingvild was able to accommodate our group of 8 after we contacted a day before via email. Very prompt response. Most of our group went with the fish of the day which was a hake. Truly the best fish I've eaten in a long time. Dessert was also excellent. read more

My friend and I went to eat here on a Saturday night. We found out about the restaurant last minute and it's a smaller dining room and were unable to be seated. However, the restaurant looked very authentic to the city and the server made a great recommendation to a restaurant close by and invited us back the following night. We came back for our last meal in the city and it was fantastic. The menu is seasonal & local with excellent options. I tried the Aquavit plate that came with three of their appetizers each paired with a Norwegian Aquavat. If you're not familiar with Aquavat like me prior to this experience, it is a Scandinavian staple (Vodka made from caraway seeds and each flavored with different spices). All of the food was outstanding and will not break the bank. If you're looking for some local Scandinavian cuisine, I would highly recommend! I don't know what New Norwegian means, I suppose it means that you are not going to get Lutefisk here, but to me, it's just Norwegian, and very good quality food at that. I arrived 1 hour late from Flam. Ordered the draft beer, which was from a micro brew in Flam. The waitstaff was very forgiving and saved a nice table for the late arrival. Very kind of them. She did point out that the beer was from Flam and that I should probably have chosen something else. I think it's the water, or that I've been hanging out with midwesterners too much as of late, but I've become quite the beer lover and every place I'd been to, I've managed to order a bier. Thankfully øl is served Pilsner style mostly with some hefeweizen thrown in, both are light and airy. Spesekroken offers a good selection of øl. I proceed with the appetizer trio followed with a hearty mushroom soup. Possibly the best I've ever had. At which point I had a chance to relax and started checking out this bistro. It's very quaint and cozy. The place obviously attract foreigners. There seems to be a British couple followed by three Americans. A middle age man who seemed a bit lonely and was talking loud about his adventure in Bergen. The sympathetic younger couple spoke with him. He said that he worked in Santa Rosa and then proceeded to give the younger couple his opinion about the valley. I would like to tell him that he should stop talking about such things, some of us would like to not think about the valley, the rising housing market in the bay area, and the rat race in general. Some of us would like to enjoy the ambience, the delicious soup, and anticipate the next course. Just then my fish arrives. It was a tomato based fish stew, with abundant fish and intense flavoring. This is when you think: why can't bay area fish stew taste this refined? Reindeer steak next and they were moist and tender. Why would Alaskan dishes have reindeer sausage but not the steak? I wondered. There is, of course, abundant internet access. Which makes this traveler jumping for joy. Dessert came in small pieces with lavender ice cream. Quite refreshing tart. Price point: think medium range San Francisco restaurant. Nothing terribly expensive, but the quality is outstanding, far exceeded most of the restaurants I've been to in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, and Stockholm. It would appear that the standard is high, food is skillfully prepared and people who work in the restaurant really show they care. I don't have any complaints. Except that I wish they could open a restaurant like that in San Francisco. It'll take some planning for me to make the permanent move to that part of the world. I don't like waiting. read more

Amazing! Was looking for a nice restaurant for my mother & myself's last night in Bergen, we wanted good norwegian food we found better. The menu is so interesting with thought through combinations, extremelt flavoursome. So good we cleaned all our plates like they had never had food on! Highly recommend to pop by this restaurant, not a touristy place but rather known to locals for their special occasions or romantic date for example. I was visiting Bergen with my daughter, and we (well, really *I*) wanted a "fancy dinner" on our trip. My daughter is only 6, but well-behaved, so I booked a very early dinner time for the two of us. We were warmly welcomed, and not a single person gave me (or her) the side-eye for bringing a child to a small, intimate restaurant. It was July, but I was able to book the reservation on the same day (but I chose a 4:30pm time so perhaps that is why it was easier). They have excellent allergy labeling on the menu, and accommodated her dairy allergy just fine and offered her a "juice tasting" instead of wine with the appetizer, which I also had. Service was great, unobtrusive and patient. There were no other kids in the restaurant and it was definitely on the pricey side (but SO worth it). I would not have brought her later in the day. Tables are very close together so you need to have quieter conversations. The restaurant itself is quite pretty - a lovely, low-key, quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a date night. The food was amazing, fresh, and well-presented. It was also very filling - the main courses were actually quite large portions - more than I typically get in this caliber restaurant in the US, even! I would absolutely return if we come to Bergen again. read more

This place is somewhat off the beaten track but is it ever worth the effort to find it. Nestled between rows of old homes along a winding uphill street, somewhat away from the harbor, it is a small place with about 40 seats: half on the street level and the rest in the basement which resembles a cellar. The kitchen is king here. The menu is not very expansive but offers dishes that are prepared with a great amount of creativity and innovation. The 3 item appetizer with cod, soup and reindeer was a home run. The deer entree was cooked to perfection. As was the goose. Not only is the quality and taste of the food A-1 so is the plating and the presentation. A must visit in Bergen. read more

This restaurant was a solid 4.5 stars. If you're looking for an intimate fine-dining experience, come here. The inside is very small (around 20 seats), but there's a downstairs that maybe has more seating. I highly recommend making a reservation a full day before you plan on eating. The first time we came for dinner (around 8 PM), there were no available tables. One waitress kindly allowed us to make a reservation the next day for 7 PM. The restaurant is very dimly lit and decorated very classily. Our waiter was very nice, but the service was a little slow in taking away plates. [FOOD] Aquavit Plate: This is basically a sampler of three of the starters. Because I'm not 20 (legal age for hard liquor in Norway), we got the juice pairing. The scallop was really good, cooked perfectly and very buttery. The ham reminded me of prosciutto but with a little more flavor; the liver mousse wasn't bad at all. The mussel soup was very creamy and good. The juices that accompanied were apple, pear (not quite sure), and some red juice (really wasn't sure what that was). Grilled Scallop: I really liked this one. It actually came in the Aquavit Plate, but it was really good so I enjoyed the full starter. The scallop was really high quality, and the syrup paired very well with the meat. We scraped this one clean. Deer from the West Coast: They probably don't mean California. This dish comes with 2 pieces of very tender meat that melts in your mouth. The deer tastes like beef with a little bit of a gamy tinge. The pickled red onion that accompanies is super sweet and great. The Brussel sprouts are also good. The potato purée (really just mashed potatoes) is nice and creamy. Hardanger Apples Cheesecake: This was so good. The cheesecake was incredibly light, and the popcorn was great. The pickled apples are a good it of tartness, and the apple sorbet was so great (like a refreshing glass of cold apple juice on a hot day). I really enjoyed this dessert. [OVERALL] The food and service here were both very good, but there's something keeping me from giving it a full 5 stars. Our bill came out to 792 NOK (for 2 people), which isn't too bad considering Norway's prices. Anyway, I definitely recommend the restaurant, and I would happily come back! read more

She loved how we were tourists and helped us a lot with recommendations for both tourist activities and food. We split bottles of wine by 6 and when she poured unevenly, got another bottle to even it out! A bag was left accidentally after dinner and she made sure it was returned to us! Above and beyond for sure! Mussel soup - friends raved about it, I thought it was okay. Butter based soup, I thought the butter was overwhelming and thought they were skimpy with the seafood Scallops - very good, but not the best I've ever had. Small portion for the price, but it is a pricey restaurant Reindeer - gamey and similar to venison. Not my thing but I think it was made well and tasted good if I liked the texture Veal - I think this was the best veal I've ever had. Made to medium rare perfection and the roasted veggies on the plate was the perfect complement to the meat. Wish I could eat this all the time!!! Creamy fish soup - more cheesey than buttery. I liked this more than the mussel soup but I was the only one out of 6 people that thought this. Is it just me or does everything taste more intense at Spisekroken? The veal was the pinnacle of veal, and the crispy duck was the duckiest duck I've ever tasted. We came in and were seated near an elder french couple that were whispering to each other "Très bon!" in awed tones. For starters I had the King Crab, and my boyfriend had the carrot soup. Within moments I was looking bewildered at my clean plate, cause I hit it so fast with my fork it was so delicious. Meanwhile, my boyfriend was looking greedily at his bowl asking me if it'd be rude to lick it clean. Then came the tour-de-force. Duck and Veal. Don't ask questions, just order one of these dishes. I'm not a finish-your-plate kind of eater, but I finished my freaking plate. Of course, we then ordered the sorbet. Dreamy. Such a great little restaurant in Bergen.
