I have just recently moved to Seattle and gotten involved with KMC Washington. I am so impressed by…read morethe people here! There are many very long-time practitioners of Buddhism here, and it is clear that they have been sincerely being Buddhists. These are people who have learned from a qualified Buddhist master, and they are humble and have a sense of humor. It is so refreshing! This is a great example of Sangha. As you can see from the photos, the temple is beautiful with a lovely meditation room. This is covid time, and they are being careful, so everything is streamed right now. It will be wonderful when people can gather together inside again in the future.

I encourage everyone to make their own impression but being as this is Yelp, here's mine: this…read moreplace is great in concept but it quickly gave off a cultish vibe to me. And I'm not saying this because I'm a skeptic of Buddhism, as my entire family is Buddhist! My grandfather was a political figure in Vietnam who had the backing and support of the Buddhist party. He also was the one who lent his car to his monk friend on the day that monk infamously lit himself on fire in protest (if you Google pics you can see my grandpa's car in the background behind the burning monk). So yeah, I'm trying to say that I have a familiarity/background with Buddhism. Anyway back to the KMC: Everyone was very nice, but I didn't like how everything was "for purchase" and how meditation classes have a mandatory fee. I'm used to free or donation-based sessions, as most Buddhist temples/centers I'm familiar with are. It felt like they obviously were trying to make money wherever they could, which didn't feel very Buddhist to me? But again, I understand that this place isn't technically a temple or monastery etc so maybe that's the difference. Group meditation felt more like a lecture hall at a college. I personally seek a more intimate, calming environment. Here, they have the ceiling lights on so bright you'd think you were being interrogated. How does one relax and meditate with bright ass lights? Perhaps that's a challenge on purpose? I'd suggest dimming the lights a bit for meditation, even if it means some might fall asleep. *UPDATE*: Upon further online research, I've discovered to my shock that the NKT organization is actively against the Dalai Lama and have been called the "Death Eaters to the broader Hogwarts of global Tibetan Buddhism." There are actually testimonies written by "survivors" claiming how NKT is very much a cult. Make up your own mind about it but the info is out there. TLDR: I don't know if most who go here are aware of all this controversy and that Kelsang Gyatso is opposed to His Holiness. Basically, the sect he's created here is based on teachings/practices that's been banned from Tibetan Buddhism, and there are eyebrow-raising articles online regarding the activity of its members. I strongly urge anyone interested to do their research first because I suspect they're largely successful due to the ignorance of Westerners (their target audience/demographic). I'm giving them 2 stars because the people seemed nice, they provided snacks afterwards, and the lesson taught that day had value, but I personally will not be supporting this center and will seek meditation from a more traditional Buddhist establishment.

Their childcare offerings are limited since there are hardly any children that attend. A lot of the folks that go seem to be older so we found we didn't find a lot of like-minded people in our age group. I have to mention too-- that I feel pressured frequently (during record breaking inflation) to give money. They mention it in the service which feels normal but sometimes a bit pushy. But they called me to ask for a pledge which felt invasive and I feel pushed away by that behavior. I really enjoy Abagail as a minister-- younger, lively, more appealing to the GenX/Millenual crowds. I have mixed feelings on Kathianne. Mainly she has a very boomer kind of demeanor and attitude. Feels ego-driven? Although she is very charismatic and decent at public speaking. Some of the things she says hits me wrong and can feel like she lacks empathy. There's certain aspects I love but some others that have us not really feeling comfortable coming back. Oh and the musicians are wonderful-5 stars!

It was confusing because the address indicates a restaurant so you have to walk to the back of the restaurant and look for a gate that takes you into an enclosed garden-like area with prayer flags and lights. Inside t space was very comfortable: the temperature was comfortable with more than a dozen mats neatly laid out and prepared for guests. We were invited to be cleared with Rosewater spritz and feather energy. It was very intentionally and thoroughly done like an initiation into the space. It helped us feel like we had arrived and could be very present to ourselves in the space. When everyone had arrived we were oriented to the kinds of sounds we might experience as well as the state of mind, everything from moving into it transported space to falling asleep as, she pointed out, it is sometimes the thing we need the most. We were not rushed, we were invited to write our intentions. When she began, Karen was very skillful at making the Crystal bowls sing. For an hour we were transporte. It was an extraordinary experience...so said all of us. Several asked about alternative sessions including private sessions and private events. It will be a joy to return.

I was new here and found this studio to be authentic, and kind and comfortable for new guests without any attitudes but true warmth. Los Angeles was home to the largest name teachers like Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Tej, Guru Singh and others we followed for so many years but then after Covid, much of the industry shifted into closed down studios, no more early pre-sunrise Sadhana daily meditation by candlelight, and even after completion of my License with Yoga West in L.A, I truly feel so out of the loop of our meditation and mantra and yoga community. This is a great studio and I hope to reconnect when the best time soon.

The instructors and attendees are all very nice. It's a comfortable place that doesn't feel intimidating. The workout varies- sometimes more sweaty than others, sometimes more breathwork and chanting, etc...I enjoy the variety! And the class breezes by! I really enjoy the Sunday 5pm class the most. I wish the times were different. A 6pm class would be perfect. 5:30 is hard to make after work, and 7pm leaves a pretty big gap of waiting....thus, I usually only attend on Sundays. I would attend more during the week if times matched my schedule better. For now, I will settle on 1x per week, and I really look forward to that class. I highly recommend this center if you're looking to try Kundalini yoga!

In addition to Megaformer and mat Lagree classes, The Box also offers mat Pilates and yoga. I took my first Megaformer class with Maureen, the owner of the studio. I really appreciate the pace of her class, and she is such a sweet person! Whenever she's in the studio, she takes the time to chat with everyone and check in on how we're doing, which I love. I've found myself drawn to Ella's mat Pilates class, especially after taking two Megaformer classes that I need to improve my core strength. I appreciate the cues and modifications she shares during class, as they help me adjust to my current fitness level. I've also been loving Kendall's Megaformer classes. So far, I really enjoy her playlists, and even though her classes are challenging, they make me want to come back and improve. As for the overall vibe of the studio, I've found it to be very welcoming to people from all different fitness backgrounds. I appreciate that there's no pressure to be competitive, you can truly "come as you are." It's exactly what I need in my life, and I'm so grateful to have The Box in the neighborhood. I look forward to trying their mat Lagree and yoga classes when our schedules align.
