Currently now, they have their own small storefront in a historic building in the Annex. I've followed Spirited Tarts & Coffee on Instagram for a while now where I've always tried to plan to go to one of their popup markets in the past - however, the timing was never right. Just recently they opened a small storefront! Watching them most about their renovations about their small cafe got me more excited to finally visit them and try their pastries for the first time. I stopped by a few days after they opened in the morning, however, at that time the espresso machine wasn't warmed up yet and I didn't have time to wait. I finally came back to Spirited Tarts and Coffee on a Thurs afternoon and Joanna and Ryan were both there. I ordered a cortado and crinkled matcha cookie to enjoy in the space. The cafe is intimate and cozy where there is some bar or bench seating available. The pastries neatly laid out on display when you enter and the menu features espresso based drinks, pourover, and even tea lattes. My cortado was made well and the cookie was delicious. after 14,000+ steps around toronto, i feel there are certain things a person is legally entitled…read moreto, and gelato is apparently one of them. preferably two flavours, because apparently i also have no self control when faced with a flavour decision. i originally came in planning to keep things simple with a small and one flavour. then i got caught between the black sesame and lychee, because choosing between two completely different flavours is harder than walking 14,000 steps. the server suggested going up to a medium for just $1 more, which meant i could get both. so, naturally, i made the financially responsible decision to spend the extra dollar. and i'm glad i did. the black sesame was nutty, roasty and slightly bitter, with that deep toasted flavour that makes black sesame so good in gelato. the lychee went in the completely opposite direction, bright, floral and fruity, with a light, refreshing sweetness. the lychee was also vegan, which is a nice option to have. together, they made a surprisingly great pairing. rather than choosing two flavours that were both intensely sweet, i got a nice contrast between the deeper, earthier black sesame and the fragrant fruitiness of the lychee. each flavour stood on its own, but they also worked really well together. mizzica gelataria and cafe is a fun little stop when you're looking for something cold and sweet while exploring the city. they have a good variety of gelato flavours, including vegan options, and being able to sample up to two flavours makes the line move faster . the staff were friendly and helpful, and i appreciated the suggestion to size up so i could try both flavours rather than having to choose between them. sometimes the best $1 spent is the dollar that prevents you from wondering, "but what if i had gotten the other one?" after 14,000+ steps, i consider this less of a dessert and more of a well earned recovery strategy. and yes, i would absolutely make the same financially responsible decision again.
