I booked this place last minute for Cal Day at UC Berkeley, so reasonably priced options were limited. Given that, I felt it delivered exactly what I needed. For those leaving negative reviews, this is a case of getting what you pay for. The biggest plus was the location, an easy walk to campus. The staff were also very accommodating, allowing me to check in early and holding my luggage for a few hours after checkout, which made a big difference. That said, it's more of a hostel-style setup. My room had a shared bathroom, the water pressure was weak, and the mini fridge was noisy enough to keep me up at night. The walls are also quite thin, so you can hear neighboring rooms. Would I stay here again? Yes, mainly for the convenience. Next time, I'd just plan ahead and book a room with a private bathroom. read more

Absolutely do not stay here. Do not be fooled by website photos. The place is old and shabby. More like a hostel or guesthouse than a proper hotel. Lot of amateur, half-finished repairs. Depressing atmosphere. The kind of place you come to OD. The power went out during my stay. There are no backup lights in the rooms. There was no staff onsite. I called the hotel and was told they would give me 50% off for the inconvenience. On checkout, no staff onsite. They would not answer the phone when I called for a week afterwards. I paid almost $500 for four nights. The second night saw a MOUSE in my room. I moved to another room and that next I night saw another MOUSE scampering through that room as well! The hotel has a lot of potential with a nice vintage feel, but the shared bathroom and room are not sanitary. The morning of checkout, I was abruptly woken by something crawling on my shoulder. I turned on the lights and saw bed bugs coming from the corner of the mattress. I search the bed and found more bed bugs in the hem of the bed skirt. Traumatized, I went to the bathroom that is shared among other guests to shower. The shower's draining system was clogged, which caused the water to fill up and smelled like someone peed in the shower. Although the hotel staff is nice and the manager gave me a refund for my experience with thebed bugs, I would not refer someone to stay here. Flies greeted us in the outside entryway. My husband said it had the smell of a landfill. Our coffee pot had old coffee with mold in it. Community showers were backing up and unkempt. Only saw 1 cleaning person each day for both floors. Hard to park in the street without complicated meters and construction equipment and trucks taking most, if not all of the parking spaces. I stayed for 5 days and have never been in a worse hotel in my life. The towels were not clean with yellow stains on them; found some cockroaches inside my bathroom; manager Norman refused to clean my room and claimed that they would only clean my room after I check out. The worst part was the manager Norman's attitude towards the cleanness issue I raised. When I called the front desk on my phone and he picked up, he said "you have a what inside your bathroom? A cock inside your bathroom?" So, yes, I called to tell him I saw a cockroach and he made fun of me. I've never dealt with such unprofessional and gross people in my life. Norman, you really are a big cockroach, the king of all rats and roaches raising your family of cockroaches inside your hotel. Norman's attitude towards any problem I raised was absolutely irresponsible, he refused to clean my room upon my request and claimed that it was because he didn't want the cleaner to tamper with our personal belongings. I've never heard of a worse excuse than that. I asked him for some clean towels, and I asked for multiple sets, Norman being cheap and stingy only gave me one set at first, and I had to actually start a long explanation for why I need another set to get another set. He behaved like if he gave me another set of towels he would lose everything that's important in his life immediately, so he had to make me explain myself and ask for another set. Also, I wonder if the female worker Jackie was his wife, if so, that really explains why Jackie looked so tired all the time. She really was the only one who's at least trying to be helpful, doing all the work, while Norman glared at the guests with side eyes and see how far he can push them and manipulate them. Worst hotel I have ever been to. As I walk into the room, the carpet was stained and ripped up in various places. The comforter on the bed was dirty and had dark spots on it. Inside the restroom, the shower curtain was ripped in two spots and was hanging off. Low water pressure and toilet didn't flush. I called front desk to let them know, the front desk man told me to use a plunger. We hadn't even used the restroom yet! Window in restroom wouldn't shut, so a cold draft came through all night. THATS not the worst part. The next morning, I opened up the desk drawer and found someone's prescription medication. Also, a used N95 mask, this individuals hospital paperwork (with his name and alcohol withdrawal diagnosis) and bloody gauze. I walked to the front desk and the man did not seem to care. Location, location and a low rate! The Nash offers a 1930s hotel experience, upgraded with wifi and some new carpets. The beds and pillows are ok and you can have a private modern bath. Friendly management, looks like this is the Lam family operation. Our room had a desk, dorm-size refridge and a tiny coffee maker, also an iron and ironing board but no hair dryer. Hi def TV and slow wifi, the Ethernet cable in the room gave good service to the laptop but the iPad people had to be patient LOL. Great towels but no wash cloths. You want a thermostat!? Haha, the big radiator in the corner was smoking hot and the control valve was stuck, hmm. No a/c that I could see, but we didn't need it in March. Cigarette burns on the carpet in our room added, uh, character, yeah that's the word. Here you pay the bill at check *in*, right up front and it's called "rent." You get a room key - not a plastic card, a real piece of metal - plus a key for the front door, which is always locked. The front desk is one flight up on the Mezzanine level. See what I mean about the 1930s experience? Despite the street-front location our room was pretty quiet. Except for the occasional knuckle rap on the door about three am. Wtf? Lots of vintage details for fans of old buildings. The doors, trim and radiator sure look original! The old elevator is still going strong. The bathroom in our room (and the shared ones in the hall) had new tile, tub, sink and faucets, but vintage cabinets. You can see a fair amount of cable and conduit snaking along the walls. In short this place is at least a couple of decades overdue for a rehab. Located on University Ave just half a block west of Shattuck (downtown Berkeley's main street). So it's just steps to many interesting bars and restaurants, or a few minutes on foot to the western edge of UC Berkeley campus and the Bart station. Take the money you saved by staying here and blow it at Chez Panisse, about a 10 min walk north on Shattuck. read more

I went in there only to find out that my room did not have a bathroom, my closet had a sink in it and that I would have to shower in the hallway and use the restroom in the hallway as well. Walking down the hall to urinate the door said vacant and upon opening it a man was in there who immediately shouted that he was in there, appearing to be currently defecating. Upon apologizing to the man, attempting to push the door closed, it appeared to be stuck. I asked the man: "how do you close the door" he replied "I dont know I thought it was locked!" Before proceeding to rise up from the throne, pulling the door shut. I was very disgusted by it and decided to leave. This is a very good budget hotel in berkeley with superb access to Cal campus. I stayed here on two occasions where I had to visit my alma mater for research. On one occasion, I spoke to the owner to ask for extra towels. Not only did he give me the towels, but he invited me to his family dinner. It was my first time dining with an owner of a hotel where I was staying in. You will like or even love this hotel knowing that the facility is on the old side a bit and the building itself is a historic one that dates from the 1920s or so. In fact, that added some charm to my stay. In many cases, you would find a clean room with nice bed here for less than $100. Well, that is a bargain in berkeley where there are only a few hotels and all the motels are located far from campus. There are a plenty of shared bathrooms on each floor. So even if you book a room without a private bath, I don't think there will be a problem. Again, know that this is a clean, budget hotel an a prime location (university and shattuck) that is run by a lovely family, and you'll enjoy your experience. read more

It's some nice and helpful folks running a reasonably priced hotel. Nothing fancy and possibly a bit quaint, but no bullshit at the same time and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. I wouldn't spend more money on the other hotels around the area b/c the differential simply isn't worth it, and none beat Nash in terms of location. If I want to pay $200~300+ for a night, I'd just go to Fremont or San Francisco where the money actually gets you something fancy and decent. This place has wireless internet along with really comfortable mattresses. I'm not sure what other reviewers mean when they mention bed bugs because for me, they were extremely clean. I stayed here over the weekend for a conference at UCB and was pleasantly surprised with the Nash Hotel. I didn't have a reservation but I was able to get a room regardless. Checking in was quick and easy and the room was nice and clean. Not to mention it's at the heart of downtown. The other reviewers don't do this hotel justice. Nash Hotel is a quaint, no fuss hotel right in the heart of downtown. We used to live in Berkeley and wanted a reasonably priced option within walking distance of BART when we recently returned for a wedding. This hotel appears to be family owned, and the guy at the front desk (I assume he's Norman Lam) was really nice and helpful. We paid ($119/night) for room with a private bathroom. Everything was clean and comfortable, and I suspect that some of the older reviews here on Yelp were from before they renovated. Our king sized mattress was great! My one complaint about the room was the terrible water pressure in the shower. For some reason, there were always flies outside the main entrance. Maybe someone spilled some soda out there? read more

I'm being generous to give the Nash Hotel two stars. The first one is because the location is close to UC Berkeley and the second is because I'm sure I could find worse if I put my mind to it. And oh, it was cheap but you do get what you pay for. Try shared bathroom for the floor. They did "upgrade" to a bathroom with a horrible black ring inside toilet , no parking, no door on closet , no room service including no trash pickup, no replacement of towels, no heat, grimy carpet and construction workers banging at 7:30 am right next door, And if you got up the nerve to ask for more shampoo on day 3 you will be asked how many people you have in your room. To top it off we did lose our key and were told it would be $50 to replace. They didn't ask when we left or we would have had a problem. Too bad. We plan to make trips up to see our grandchildren and with a few changes it could be acceptable but as is it's definitely not getting my recommendation. read more

I had forgotten about this hotel until I walked passed it the other day, a couple years after moving to Berkeley. First, gotta give them props. They were the ONLY hotel we could find last min. The lobby isn't bad. The staff was nice at first. When we booked a single room, and nice again when we checked in. However, when we booked the room, they failed to mention the bathrooms and showers were shared with the floor (as in, community bathrooms and showers). The room also smelled like cigarettes, hard. After a discussion ("do we want this?"), we decided, no... So we puttered down to the lobby, and politely said the room smelled like smoke, we were not made aware of the community shower and bathroom, and the price was simply too high relative to what we were getting. At first, the gentleman at the desk refused, but after arguing the points again, he politely agreed and said my card would be refunded. We ended up going to the Rose Garden Inn on Telegraph, and landed an AWESOME room with a fireplace and, you know... a bathroom. For a $100. Totally a baller's room! I grew up occasionally staying in a Motel 6 during family roundtrips crammed in a Toyota Celica. Sooo my expectations were not exactly fireworks. But for Christ sake... no bathroom? Honorable mention: it took me realizing several months later, after receiving some old bank statements, that my card was sadly never refunded. So, since I had since moved to the Bay, I walked to Nash and confronted them. Finally got it back. Complete let down on every possible front. read more

The hotel is nice, the beds are comfortable and the rooms are spacious. We had a room with a private bathroom, refrigerator, and coffee maker. It's close to UC Berkeley and a short walk to great restaurants and bars, great location for the price. The staff is nice, keeps to themselves but is there 24 hours if you need anything. There are a lot of homeless people on the street, but the hotel is safe. You need a key to open the front door to the lobby. Budget-minded visitors- yes! Clean-freaks- no. I enjoyed my stay at Nash but I know it wouldn't work for my husband who even at upscale hotels is hesitant to touch anything and won't walk on floors in anything less than shoes and socks. There's a funky smell in the air - it's just an old building but the rooms and elevator are updated (as of June 2015). I had to go out and buy those foot coverings, because the rug is rather scuzzy. But I have to admit the place grows on you - like staying at your Grandma's house. The other people attending the same conference were staying at Downtown Berkeley Inn which is a motel. First time in Berkeley for a college tour, The Nash was perfectly situated. Right near some of the town's best restaurants and bars, and a short, easy walk up University Avenue to the campus. The hotel is not super-fancy, but it has character, and the staff was warm, welcoming, and helpful. In my rush to check out, I left a couple shirts hanging in the closet. I enjoyed having a key for the building as well as my room, and though down town Berkeley is no Compton, it's always nice for a little extra security. I have stayed in this hotel for many times because of its downtown location. It's certainly not an upscale hotel, but it has very good value for its price. Old fashioned style, family run business, standard room, 32 inch TV, and what I care the most is the free internet. Good choice for someone who want to stay in Downtown Berkeley and without a car --- it's 5 minutes walking to UC Berkeley, Au-Coquelet cafe right across the street, and the new Trader Joes just opened one block away. p.s. the hilarious thing is that I have heard from the lady in the hotel that William Hung used to live here as a long term tenant. This hotel saved our life everything was full packed all the way through Berkeley Daly City San Francisco Oakland but Nash Hotel had one room left for us. The Nash Hotel was my home while I worked in SSF and commuted on BART, daily. I lived at the Nash hotel for about 7 months straight while I interviewed, worked, switched jobs, etc. I can't rent an apartment due to an eviction from year 2004 and found a great place at the Nash. I originally went to the Nash in 2004 for a few nights and came back to Berkeley from San Diego for work and rented there again and again and again between rental opportunities, educational, work, etc. The building management is friendly and passively nice. They resolve problems, seem to have an open mind, etc. Some of the tennants who don't use the building as a hotel have lived there for years and years. You get more than what you pay for in general. They keep the place up and work with the people on site. It's a great place for visitors and a great place for those of us forced to fork out some money for a room instead of an apartment. I thoroughly enjoyed my rent time at the Nash hotel and was happy with my room and the service. The family that runs the business is great. You can be a lot worse off in the Bay Area for short term rental when you're not loaded with money and I'd recommend it to anybody. read more

Had a horrible experience and would recommend no one stay here. The lobby smelled like wet carpet or cat pee and the smell carried up into the rooms. I made my reservation over the phone and when I got there they had lost it and told me it was my fault for calling the wrong number, which I had not. . They then charged me a higher rate than what I was told over the phone. There were dead plants everywhere and the lobby and rooms do not look like the photos.
