Instead of installing toe kicks he put in baseboards which do not go all the way up and now there is a gap under my kitchen cabinets which lets in quite the breeze when it is cold. I told him about all of my issues and he didn't care. He didn't bother to even 'try' and fix anything that I had issues with and just got his money and walked away. I hate the way my kitchen turned out and told him that to no avail.

At one point, he claimed a family emergency, and at another, he said his worker was taken away by ICE. Melde Construction company's motto "Love your home. Enjoy the journey" is nothing but a facade…read moreafter the experience our family endured from May 2022 to December 2025. The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details. It was completely rotted out and was a safety hazard. Out of the four contractors I called, Melde was the only one who responded right away. Two of the other companies told me the balcony was beyond the scope of their abilities. As for Melde, I knew they did home renovations, so I wasn't sure if our balcony was a job they'd do. Nick was able to come out within a day or two to give us a quote, and he assured me that they could do high-end renovations, build a dog-house, and everything in between (including the balcony). They were able to start the job the following Monday. They finished on time and under the original estimate. I was very pleased with the work. I'll definitely do business with them again.

I am a construction attorney and know very well the problems that people can have during a residential remodeling project. Because I know what can, and often does, go wrong, we had delayed starting this major project for several years. After our experience with Watermark, however, we wished that we had done this project years earlier. We couldn't be happier with the final results, how quickly the work was done, the quality of the work, and the adherence to the budget. Our architect prepared some initial sketches and we met with Mike to discuss the project and to get preliminary pricing. Mike quickly returned the estimates and with enough detail to make important decisions about the scope of the project, and changes that needed to be made in order to fit within our budget. We went through this process several times until we finally settled on the final scope and price. When we began the project, my wife was about 7 months pregnant (and we have a 2 year old) and we were concerned about lead-based paint in our house, which was originally built in 1962. Mike did the lead tests, which revealed some lead paint in old cabinets, and gave us detailed information about the EPA's new lead-based paint guidelines. Ultimately, the cabinets were removed (intact) to avoid creating excessive amounts of lead dust. During demolition, our architect commented that it was an "extremely clean demo" and in about 3 or 4 days, everything had been removed down to the studs, including the old Saltillo tile, and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. During this process, we met several of Watermark's subcontractors including the framer, plumber, and electrician, all of whom were extremely competent, friendly, and focused on the task and getting it done right. I frequently found the plumbing, drywall, and painting subcontractors working on the house well past 6:00 pm and even on Sunday evenings, in order to maintain the schedule. Throughout the project, Mike was regularly on site and anticipating upcoming issues. He communicated with us about potential issues that may arise, the need to address certain issues while they were exposed and easily accessible, and kept us focused on making selections (tile, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, paint colors, etc.) to avoid any delays. We were motivated to complete the project as soon as possible, because we wanted to move back into the house as soon after having our second child. All of the major work was completed 2 weeks before the completion date, and we moved back into the house exactly 1 week before the completion date in the contract! In addition to finishing ahead of schedule, Mike was able to complete the project on budget. With any remodeling project (especially older homes) there are a number of unknowns that will undoubtedly occur. We encountered our share of issues, but Mike always kept us informed of the issues, and discussed the costs ahead of time. Even with the unknowns and the unavoidable additions/changes that occur during any project, we were able to complete the project in line with the budget. [You should budget an extra 20% for any construction project. Ours was only 10%]. It is obvious that Mike cares about the quality of the work and wants his customers to be happy with the finished product. On almost every occasion, Mike had already identified issues that needed to be correct before I could bring them up. He expected his subcontractors to perform the work to the same level of quality that we expected, so we were always very satisfied, especially with the final result. To sum up: this was a somewhat demanding project because the house was fairly old and required a significant amount of work, I'm a construction lawyer who is hypersensitive to potential pitfalls, my wife was pregnant, and we both had high expectations for the finished product. Not only was Mike willing to take on this project, he completed it on time, on budget, and with fantastic results!
