I've always wanted to go there so I wasn't going to let this opportunity get away. So I investigated the VRBO. Rentals instead of a hotel. Guess what? I love this program. For a few bucks more you can get a condo with all the comforts of home. It was a last minute booking and they upgraded us to a two bedroom penthouse unit. A couple of advantages. If you get hungry at night, just go to the kitchen and microwave a snack. Coffee anytime you want it, and if the weather turns bad, you're not trapped in a single room. Just a note, weather was fabulous. We had two balconies to watch the sun rise, or to just have a cup of coffee in the morning. Our building was waterfront so it was a very short walk to the beach. They have a pool also for those who prefer a pool instead. We used both the beach and the pool. The complex is gated so it's pretty secure. They provide beach chairs and umbrellas at no additional cost. There's a supermarket just up the road so we stocked up on food and snacks for the weekend before checking in. Overall it was FABULOUS and we already have plans to go back in the winter. Just for the record I'm really starting to hate snow.. Sorry. I suggest Amelia Island Surf & Racket for your next Florida vacation, you will not regret. Just do me a favor , don't go in February, that's when I'm going and I don't want to lessen my odds of getting that penthouse unit again.

I was told that the Sure Stay hotel the better of my options for a short stay.. well, after the warm reception I (and my Vietnam vet colleague) got, both at the Sure Stay and the VFW here in Kingsland (a short distance from the Sure Stay), I went home to Charleston, SC, checked on what it would cost to move to St. Marys, called the relators here, located an apartment (that wasn't "quite" ready), and moved lock stock and barrel. I booked into the Sure Stay for the duration of my wait for the apartment. Besides the wonderful breakfasts that were included in the room rate, having the cocktail lounge, "The Breeze", with their menu of bar foods, made it so I didn't really HAVE to go out for dinner. my stay at the Sure Stay got extended a couple of times because of problems that came up with the apartment, but it didn't bother me a bit; after a week I felt like family at the Sure Stay. I still visit the Breeze once a week and I'm greeted by the Sure Stay employees as if I never left. My Vietnam vet colleagues have come from out of state to visit and I put them in the Sure Stay. They treat us right and very helpful to our older veterans and the widows that come to these reunions. Rooms are very comfortable, clean and neat. Housekeeping staff is outstanding and the room is always very clean. I have not had a complaint in all the time I have spent here. This time down Melissa the General Manager was very helpful and accommodating to all of our needs that is the main reason this is our home location for this very special reunion. The rooms were quaint, comfortable and clean. Bathroom has a standing shower with local made toiletries. Rate was around $200 with a senior discount. The complimentary southern style breakfast is served from 7A-10A, with a good offering of selections. Staff was friendly and helpful, making the stay easy and relaxing. Free parking for guests in the dedicated parking garage underneath. I've always enjoyed staying at Marriott hotels. In fact, many of the literary conventions I attend are held at Marriott properties, and they've become a familiar home away from home for many of us in the horror writing community. I have another convention coming up in Anaheim for WorldCon, where I'll once again be staying at a Marriott. I also stayed at a Marriott in Hawaii over the Christmas holiday. Unfortunately, I did have one unsettling experience toward the end of this stay. I returned to my room at approximately 11:43 a.m. to check out and discovered that all of the clothes I had left in the dresser drawers and closet were gone. Thankfully, General Manager Joyce Johnson stepped in and handled the situation. My clothing was located and returned to me in a plastic bag, and some of my toiletries were retrieved from the trash. After wiping those items down with Lysol wipes, they were fine. Mrs. Johnson was clearly apologetic about what had happened and made an effort to make things right. In addition to returning my belongings, she provided me with a small gift bag containing wine, water, chocolate, and peanuts, as well as points toward my Marriott Bonvoy account. I genuinely appreciated the way she handled the situation. Although having my belongings removed from my room before I had checked out was understandably unsettling, it did not overshadow the rest of my experience. Overall, I had a good stay, and I would stay at this hotel again.
