What a disappointing experience after having worked with him for years (to manage NY - PA) tax credit issues. Aside from the fact that, after he filed, I was repeatedly then asked for additional fees form the state, I most recently needed him to address a dispute from 2022 that he says is not an error on my end. When I asked him to address it he brushed it off very unprofessionally. In general, I've found his communication and emails to be sarcastic, unprofessional, and lacking in basic etiquette. The IRS sent me a CP 11 Notice in the mail today. It states I owe $15,000 for a miscalculation on last year's returns. Cp 11 is an automatically generated notice, produced when the IRS software detects that a taxpayer's math is off on their returns. The notice also states that I have one week from today to either pay the full $15,000 or submit an appeal. I hired Nate to prepare my federal and state taxes one year ago, and am truly disappointed to have received this result. Nate was very pleasant to work with at first, and prompt in his communications by email. But after this upsetting encounter, I have no choice but to share my story in hopes of Nate doing the right thing and fixing his mess. I have reached out to Nate to resolve the issue and am awaiting his response. If you do choose to use Nate's services, I'll list some of the red flags I came across during my tenure as his client. Maybe they will be helpful to you. * Spelling errors and data entry. Nate used an old address on one form. He got my apartment number wrong in another section. And didn't fill it in at all on another page. He neglected to include my birthdate on my 1040. And misspelled my name at one point in the draft. There were many instances like this that took several repeat emails for him to finally fix. At times, he became careless and forgetful. Which resulted in certain mistakes being repeated over and over. * Wrong form used. I asked Nate to prepare some gift tax returns in addition to my regular tax returns that year. After sending him the info he needed, he filled out a Form 3520 instead of Form 709. Seemed like an innocent mistake at first. Even though we discussed it at length prior to him starting on the draft. The former is used for gifts received, the latter used for gifts sent. At one point, Nate even got confused and insisted both forms were needed. He thought I received money (Form 3520) then gifted it out in the same year (Form 709). Take from this what you will. --------------- Update: Nate's final response was that the IRS is at fault and miscalculated on their end. He sent me an amended tax return, Form 1040X, to mail to the IRS (that also had spelling errors and incorrect information), and considered the matter closed in a final email. With a strong insistence that the IRS actually owes me money now, not the other way around. In his amended return and final email, Nate fails to show me where the mistake was made by the IRS. And fails to address how the IRS arrived at a figure $15000 away from his own calculations. Instead, he elects to include some previously excluded capital losses to bring down my total income for the year. Losses that we both discussed at length last year and decided were not able to be used on my returns originally. He glosses over all this, and merely gives me some instructions on how to mail the form in myself and wait for a response from the IRS. Please DM me if you have any questions pertaining to my time spent working with this individual. Nate seems like a nice guy who likes to chat and joke around with clients. He will make you feel comfortable when you first engage his services. But I cannot ignore the carelessness Nate demonstrated when drafting my tax returns. This problem only exists because of Nate's failure to double check his work and ensure everything was accurate before filing. A rookie mistake, that no licensed tax attorney should let happen to a client. I was lucky to catch some of his other errors, but only he had the power to calculate the final tax owed, which he ultimately failed to do. For further reading, scroll down to the very bottom of Nate's Yelp page and click on the link that says "13 reviews not currently recommended." In there you will find another of Nate's former clients from 2016 who experienced a similar big fallout with the IRS as a result of Nate's incompetence. Nate Strand is beyond 25 STARS. I had an emergency in which due to Covid I could not reach my regular Tax Accountant and I needed a copy of my most recent 1040 Tax Return within 24 hours. The normal method via contacting the IRS requires over 72 (Seventy Two) days and must be done entirely by snail mail and requires a hand written check. I had a very similar situation to Anna H... For a long time I couldn't tell which I thought was scarier, the IRS or Lawyers. It was my own ignorance and fear that created the situation in the first place. Not only was I constantly looking over my shoulder, expecting the IRS to pop out from every dark corner, but I also felt so ashamed that I had allowed things to get so out of hand it made it hard to face the idea of walking into some snooty, slimy lawyers office.
