I enjoy Nathan & Co when shopping for a last-minute gift, but I was disappointed at their customer service during my last experience. During the holidays, I bought a bunch of gifts for my in-laws in New York, and it turned out that some of the items were expired! When I brought the item back, the cashier did not offer an apology until I expressed the embarrassment of gifting an expired thing. The lack of accountability and nonchalant-ness is unfortunate when I've spent so much money at that store. I went around and checked out some of their other perishable items and noticed that they, too, were expired. Nathan & Co, step your game up and get better employees that actually care about being there enough to check inventory & provide decent customer service. read more

They have a LOT of gift options, and you can order completely online for delivery or pick up. I did pick up, and they call you when it's ready. You go up to the door and ask the person sitting there for your order, and then you are done! This is a typical gift store, ie cute stuff, but none the less STUFF. They are unique and do have useful gifts, but just wanted to warn y'all that would rather give useful things and not just cutesy "idk what to get you" gifts. read more

I really love this store and all of the cute things in it, but every single time I've come in here in the past couple of years, not a single salesperson has ever said hi. The saleswomen will always look me right in the eye and walk away, and on some occasions have chosen to greet other people in the store over speaking to me. Tonight I came in and had the usual thing happen, and thought it was hilarious how one of the saleswomen even squeezed behind me while I was looking at some jewelry to get back behind the counter without thinking to say hi or greet me. Instead of writing my email in the notebook on the counter to sign up for emails from Nathan & Co., I took the time to instead let them know that I would've bought something tonight had either of the women working bothered to greet a potential customer, and that customer service matters. So yeah, if either one of you winds up reading this, that was me, and your customer service sucks. I've spent enough money there at this point that expecting at least one of two employees in a tiny store to act like their customers exist isn't too outlandish. Glad to know one of you really likes one of the Chai-scented bath products you sell, though - I was in there long enough to listen to your personal conversation while wondering if either of you was going to stop pretending you didn't have customers. It is really unfortunate to have to write this review about the Piedmont Ave store, as Nathan & Co is one of your favorite places to shop. Today at around 3:45 my sister and I came to the store, which was completely empty. We walked in and no one spoke to us- a young Asian girl looked at us and continued texting on her phone though she was sitting in front of the register. There was a young white women sitting behind her also in her phone- she didn't even look up. When I said hello to the young Asian girl, she said "What?!" I said -" we just said hello since no one acknowledged us" She rolled her eyes and continued to type on her phone. We felt unwelcome and uncomfortable and left- also confused by the aggressive and unfriendly behavior. Unfortunately, my mother sister and I have always received this kind of reception at this location. It's unfortunate to receive this kind of treatment, especially given, for years to have spent a lot of money there to support local business. (We had actually just come from the college location after buying over 100 dollars worth of jewelry... ). My mother has met Nathan and we know he would not approve of this, so we thought that it was important to shed light on the fact that this has been the documented experience of several Black women at the Piedmont Ave location. read more

I always ask whether earrings are gold plated or gold bc i have ears that turn green and they're never annoyed looking up the brands to make sure. The only downside is that you can definitely end up walking out with way more than you went in for bc whoever their buyer is knows what's up and the place is full of all the things you never knew you wanted/needed. I was walking by on my way to another store & saw the window. It immediately pulled me in. This place has one of a kind, whimsical finds. I felt like I was in a treasure chest of funny. Where else can you find a floating mustache pen? They do have pretty items as well as some practical. This IS the spot to find local, amusing gifts that noone already owns. I cannot say enough good things about this cute shop, there's this one on Piedmont and there is also one on College Ave both in Oakland (there might be more, but those are the two that I know of). I have spent a lot of money at N&CO. They stock unique and cool stuff... from well designed household items like pillows, art, kitchen-ware, etc... to books, and drapery, etc... and it is all cool. BUT, there have been a couple of times I've gone in here and been treated as if I didn't belong. I especially found it unwelcoming to my son, who was super-excited about some of the toys they had on display. When he picked one up and played with it, someone behind the counter said - under her breath, but loud enough for me to hear - that she wished we would leave the store. CUTEST LITTLE GIFT SHOP EVER! I bought some Christmas gifts here. They have so many unique things that I couldn't even begin to describe. They have a bunch of random items, from a build your own straw kit to a cannabis cook book. I bought a really cool cappicino set. It's beautiful and the best part is that it's stackable. The prices are reasonable and the staff will even wrap your item for you if it's a present. They pretty much carry everything in this store for a unique gift. This is a great place for hostess gifts. There's a variety of cards for all occasions. They also sell really interesting coffee table books. I love going in here to just look around. Minus one star for the customer service. Although they are nice and helpful, I feel like they don't treat everyone the same. I've gotten both very attentive service when I go in the store after work but on a weekend, just in a jeans and a tee shirt, I feel like I'm looked over a little. I now use it to hold change for feeding meters (or the occasional drive-thru when I don't have bills on hand & don't want to use my debit card and the cars ahead of me are moving at a snail's pace). Only drawbacks...they don't gift wrap but for a brand bag and tissue paper, and the customer service is decidely low key. But low key is the way of Piedmont Avenue and I like it that way. read more

Whatever it is (and whatever the occasion), you will find it here, as the selection is varied and eclectic, as are the price points.
