This is a destination spot, for sure. I live in Minneapolis and even the trip down is pleasant (I recommend going down the Wisconsin side of the river), with great views and frequent eagle sightings. Lake City is a very pretty place to stop and take a walk, with lots of good places to eat. Continuing down to Wabasha (back on the Minnesota side of the Mississippi) , it's a really pretty drive. The Eagle Center is equal parts educational and a place to get up close and personal with a variety of eagles. They also have demonstrations that are guaranteed to delight both kids and adults. Take a bit of time and walk around the town of Wabasha, which was established in 1854. Many of the old homes and buildings still remain in this very historic town. The Eagle Center and the town of Wabasha are great destinations at any time of the year. read more

We didn't see much eagles, just two injured ones in a tiny room of ppl packed like sardines and it smelled of farts . For tiny museum we spent 54 on 2 adults and 3 kids for 30 min of walking around of tiny museum with random eagle facts and army stuff ... weird Wonder Woman statue ... it was not worth it. If you go there don't pay for the museum just walk around the area it's pretty there by the river . What an amazing place to learn more about our beautiful Bald Eagle. Be sure to purchase these tickets along with your admission to reserve your space. All of the employees are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Neat place to check out. We loved getting up close to the eagles and watching them eat. Museum is pretty small so the entry fee seems really high. No senior or military discount (unless active duty). With four kids and my parents and me, it was $76 to get in. I thought there would be a lot more to see and do. I wish we would have come on a Thursday or Saturday. My boys heard they provide fishing poles on those days and let you fish from the pier. No parking lot - you have to drive around the town to find street parking. read more

Great place to learn more about our beautiful Bald Eagle. They had 2 eagles in an area with lots of windows so they could watch other eagles in the wild. Both had been injured and could never be released into the wild. They do not rehab injured birds here. Lots of info and antique items displayed in exhibits up stairs, including an exhibit of the history of Native Americans from the MN area. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. I even learned what bird song I had recorded and heard as a child growing up in WI from one of the staff. Enjoyed my time here. Great activity for a rainy or winter day in Minnesota. Make a day trip from the cities and stop here and at Nelson Creamery on the WI side of the river. Lovely facility where they have a few resident bald eagles (injured and cannot live in the wild) that you can get close to. For $15 you get into the museum, see the live eagles, and can see the live eagle show where they bring out an eagle for a 45 minute educational demo (the eagle is out for about 10 of those minutes and then tucked back into the comfort of their enclosure). I thought it was well worth the money and I learned a lot. The eagles seem to be very well cared for and that's what matters to me most. If you're looking for a wild animal encounter, skip the zoo and the circus and go to a sanctuary like the National Eagle Center! read more

Eagles be kinky They get off by risking death I'd no idea So it's now ten bucks to get into the National Eagle Center. There is not a whole lot in the way of exhibits but I would say it is worth checking out once. The Center is at the confluence of the Chippewa and Mississippi River and due to some weird quirk the water there never freezes over which keeps the eagles nearby year round. There are plenty of binoculars available to use to look for them flying by. The most interesting part of my experience today was the presentation we got to see. The presentation was kind of geared towards kids, but learned some random facts about eagles that certainly amused me regarding their mating habits and other quirky things. Eagles are into autassassinophilia. Their mating ritual involves what is known as "cartwheeling" or "death spiraling". The male and female eagles lock talons and plummet pretty much free fall towards the ground before separating. Males that cannot hold the grip of the females are seen as less desirable mates and get no love. Sometimes when the male does hold on and they do not separate soon enough, the mating ritual ends up being fatal. If they make it to the ground alive with the near death experience fresh on their mind, they begin to "start the revolution". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAwcoFoAk_k Another interesting fact about eagles. At about eighteen months, young eagles are told to get lost by their parents since they are now competition for food. The vast majority of the eagles who are sent packing are not able to make the transition and end up perishing. The bald eagles that you see with the white crowns are the survivors. It takes a couple years for the white feathers to develop and only about 20 percent of eagles make it to this advanced age. There were a couple of other weird factoids learned as well. The iconic shriek of an eagle that you hear in TV and movies is not what eagles really sound like. Hollywood dubs the sounds that a red-tail hawk makes in order to make eagles seem more majestic. Eagles calls are actually more like a squeaky chicken. Last thing learned: eagles projectile poop up to six feet in distance when in their nests so there is no mess left to clean up after. read more

My wife and I were down to Wabasha for a day trip from the Twin Cities. We drove down the Wisconsin side and back up the Minnesota side, stopping at Reads Landing Brewpub (Awesome!) But I digress. First off, the admission is $8, a little steep for a place you walk through in about 40 minutes. They do have a cool exhibit with about 6 live bald eagles that have been rescued. It is the closest by far I have ever been to the symbol of America, very impressive. There was a volunteer in there giving us some interesting trivia about the birds. We got there about 11:02 and there was a presentation at 11, and it was full already and we weren't going to stick around for the next one to start in 2 hours. It was a pretty small room for a weekend. Just saying, we lost a lot of the charm of the place by missing this. They also have a balcony off the second floor, but I think July is not prime bald eagle watching time, because we saw nothing. The recommended during the winter during the time the river doesn't freeze over, which is why the eagles hang out there. There is a real interesting Indian exhibit donated by an American Indian that explains all of his gear and headdresses and stuff, which runs about 12 minutes. The gift shop is large and has some fun stuff, but I still think it really should have been no more than $5 for what you get. read more

This place is definitely geared towards children. It is small and crowded. There's no rhyme or reason to the interactive area and is very awkward to maneuver with so many families. I enjoyed the beautiful art gallery upstairs but is seemed out of place. The eagle area is again, extremely small and crowded. I'm glad the birds don't seem stressed by all the people... I was! I learned one new thing about eagles so that's a plus. 4 stars for what they do: Rehab and give sanctuary to eagles who would normally die in the wild due to mostly human caused injuries. Even if that sanctuary involves being trained to behave in front of crowds and gawked at all day, I suppose it's better than death? The birds certainly seem happy and healthy read more

My 5 star review is for Katie Rymer, an employee at the National Eagle Center. Katie's presentation about eagles is AMAZING. Her lecture is hilarious, exciting, entertaining, and educational. Everyone in my group was captivated listening to her speak. Her program is full of energy and fun for all ages. The presentation was about 45 minutes long. Katie brought an eagle in on her arm, and we got to watch it spread it's wings several times, and we got to watch it eat lunch (rabbit meat I think)! This is a very unique experience. It was cool to see the eagles up close. Visiting the National Eagle Center was a wonderful experience. They have several telescope's set up so that you can look out the window and see tons of eagles in the trees and flying around over the water right outside the National Eagle Center. They also have 4 or 5 live eagles in an open room (not cages), and you can walk right up to them. SO COOL. If you are visiting the area, or live nearby, you have to come visit the National Eagle Center and see Katie Rymer's Live Eagle Program talk. It was a pleasant drive to Wabasha from St. Paul and the Eagle Center did not disappoint. It was not outrageously awesome, but it was cool. We were there on a cool spring day, and there was not much eagle action outside, though there was one eagle across the river and when the rehabbed eagles inside got a load of that they were quite vocal about it. The viewing area to see the rehabbed eagles is nicely done, and the staff were very friendly, even to my 1 year old who kept shouting "ba"! and pointing at the eagles. A lot of the programs were either too over the head of my kids (especially the upstairs exhibits) or too simplistic for them (rubbing stations) but on the live birds and great staff made up for all that. This was my first time here. If you've never been, you should plan a visit. Its a non-profit organization that rescues bald and golden eagles. The volunteers are great, they are happy to share their knowledge and even some stories. Get there early if you want to see them up close at feeding time. The seats are limited and fill up quickly and they don't allow standing in the room, it distracts the eagle. There is a nice gift shop and a lot of other things to look at in the center. Great place to bring kids, there were a lot of them there that day. read more

Museum devoted to eagles, located right on the Mississippi in downtown Wabasha, MN. The location is also right in the heart of bald eagle territory. Lots of great information about eagles, plus live eagles which live there. All the animals are rescued, having mostly been hit by cars and unable to rehabilitate back to the wild. The most amazing thing, though, is that from the balcony of the museum you can watch wild bald eagles soaring over the river and forests, and whenever they are nearby the resident eagles inside screech at them to defend their territory. It's a fascinating demonstration of the bald eagles' incredible eyesight. Good for young and old alike. It's a must-see if you're ever in the neighborhood. read more

One of my favorite places to take out-of-town guests, or for a day trip from the metro area. More often than not, we see a dozen or so eagles on the way to the Eagle Center as we drive down the Mississippi River, so by the time we arrive we're ready to learn all about them. Despite the word "national," this center is not part of the National Parks system. Still, it's a very well designed space. You can learn exactly how big an eagle's nest is, how strong you are compared to an eagle, and what "eagle eyes" really means. And that's before you go to the main attraction, the face-time with an eagles with a lecture from a worker or volunteer. I've seen this hour-long lecture at least three times, and each lecturer has always given her/his own twist to it. That and the unpredictable behavior of the animals themselves ensure that it's never old or boring. During the lecture, you learn not only eagle facts (how much they can carry, the regional variation in size, etc.) but also pass around hands-on exhibits for kids or kids at heart (golden vs. bald eagle skulls, eagle poop dissection, etc.). If for some reason you don't want to sit through the lecture, the "eagle ambassadors" are also in a room for you to visit. The second floor is also good to visit. Sometimes there are binoculars for sighting birds and other critters. There are more animal and ecosystem exhibits. There is also information on eagle symbolism in American culture, including Native American culture. This past weekend there was a temporary display of Native American modern art and Native American history-themed art. It's best to look at the website to know what the eagles are doing at a given time in the year. Sometimes you can see eagles soaring outside the eagle center, especially late winter/early spring during nesting season or in winter at the places where the river ice is thawed. One year we went during nesting season, but had to go across to the Wisconsin side to see eagles overhead. This past weekend we saw a huge flock of pelicans on the river, which was just as stunning as a group of eagles. Highly recommended for taking visitors from the coasts, especially if they just saw the Mall of America last time, and need to see the wild Midwest. read more

This place is so cool! They rescue and rehab eagles. If the eagle is injured to the point he cannot fly or survive in the wild, they keep it here and care for it. So amazing to see these huge birds up close. They also use the center to educate people about the birds and the hazards they face. The center is located right on the Mississippi River, Wisconsin is just across the river. there also is a large wild eagle population here and you can clearly see them flying around. This is one heck of a fun thing to do, especially if you like Eagles (the bird, not the football team or whatever else). They rescue injured eagles, and rehabilitate them. The ones that cannot fly anymore stay here for ever. And we get to see them upclose and personal. There is a one-hour lecture about eagles and birds in general (it was really useful). Also, during the lecture, they feed an eagle, and this is really interesting to watch. Very highly recommended for adults and kids. the gift shop had reasonably priced items. Wabasha, MN is of course a small town....but, had decent options for food right near the Eagle center. If you are coming from Minneapolis / St.Paul, it is better to come through Wisconsin on 94 and drive south. This is the fastest way. However, if you want the scenic route, then come through MN all the way. We did both the routes.... enjoy the eagles! read more

The actual eagles are so cool! There were 4 out when we were there. We were able to ask a bunch of questions and have them answered. We learned a lot about eagles and their habitat. We did not stay for the feeding. We were there for about an hour. It was $20 for two people. read more
