Our docent Charles at the front desk patiently explained the route, and we were given a helpful map. By the way if you go to their website prior to your visit there is a coupon; take a pic of it and save $2 per person. We enjoyed talking with Charles and then headed on the tour. This is a very well curated museum with great exhibits housed in old homes and cabins and buildings that were brought in and add an air of authenticity that is remarkable. In some of the buildings I felt like I had walked into a movie set and expected to find Quentin Tarantino lurking with a cast of nefarious characters. We could have spent much longer here and this day trip was a highlight of our visit to Colorado. Well worth the time, and my hat's off to everyone that has and is involved with this epic project-- you should all be very proud. Mahalo!

The museum is well laid out and you take it in at your own pace. I expect most people would want to spend 1-2 hours here. I particularly enjoyed reading about the first discovery of gold near Idaho Springs and what lead to the Gold rush. I also enjoyed seeing how mining techniques evolved over a short period to reveal and extract even more and more precious minerals. I learned about florescent rocks. On the top level are the hall of fame members who made significant contributions to mining, like John Wesley Powell, US Army officer, Grand Canyon explorer, professor and of course geologist; and Ed Schieffelin, who discovered silver and founded the town of Tombstone, Az, which at the turn of the last century was the largest town west of the Mississippi River.

The kind of place I imagine people don't lock their homes or cars. After a late, delicious breakfast at Happy Cooker, we took a stroll down the main street (6th Street). One of the places that caught our eye was Georgetown Gallery. It shares a front door with Georgetown Coffee & Tea. We're not big on visiting galleries because they either have outrageous prices or the art is so bizarre or ornate it's nothing we would consider putting in our home. But Georgetown Gallery is different. It is made up of several mini-galleries from artists who make unique, affordable, and very tasteful pieces. If I had unlimited funds, I would have needed two men and a small boy to carry out all the pieces of art I would have purchased! The artisans also take turns staffing the place. On this day we got to meet Karen Heber. A retired school teacher turned painter and potter. We purchased one of her lithographs. (It's the one she shows on the gallery's website.) There were a few others we also liked but our budget wouldn't allow us to buy everything we liked. Karen's pottery was beautiful and cool, but we bought a piece of pottery from another artist to fit the decor of a friend's home. Between you and me... this gallery is VERY affordable and many of the pieces are a BARGAIN! We expected the piece of pottery we bought to easily be around $35. When Karen said it was $18 we just looked at each other like "Okaaaay, wrap it up!" All-in-all it was a pleasure to speak with Karen, learn about her art and the local history, and take our time looking around the gallery without being pressured. I'm sure we'll be visiting the gallery again around Christmastime when the town has special holiday festivities.
