Attendant was in the women's restroom cleaning away and the sinks, toilets and floor were VERY clean. 1/5 stars for the trickle (as mentioned in a previous review) of a stream that came from 2 of 3 sinks. Ugh! Be sure to have sanitizer handy for extra germ killing as the water pressure is horrible. Great vending machine options including hot coffee drinks. Change machine available also. Would be nice if this stop had a display with brochures from sites in the area. They only had a few free catalogs in the stands outside. Indoor ADA button did work. Nice pedestrian bridge outside going from the parking lot to some picnic tables. Overall very clean and tidy. Highly recommend stopping. Just don't expect to fully rinse your hands if you're using the women's facilities.

A very nice and clean rest area that is easy to access…read more While traveling, we decided to stop at the Coalfield Rest Area for a break and found it to be a very nice place to stop. It was easy to get off the interstate and equally easy to get back on when we were ready to continue our trip. The parking is laid out well, with the truck parking located closer to the interstate and farther away from the building, while the car parking is located much closer to the rest area building. This makes it easy to park and get inside without having to walk through the truck parking area. The building itself is a nice-looking red brick structure with a metal roof and several large concrete planters in front. Once inside, I was impressed with how clean and well maintained everything was. The building has terrazzo floors that give it a very nice appearance, along with some limited seating, vending machines, and the restrooms you would expect to find at a highway rest area. Everything we saw was clean and in good condition during our visit. There was plenty of parking available, and the separation between the cars and trucks made the entire area seem well organized. Overall, this was a very nice, clean, and functional rest area that provided exactly what we needed for a break during our travels. If you are traveling through the area and need a place to use the restroom, stretch your legs, or just take a short break from driving, I would definitely recommend the Coalfield Rest Area to my fellow travelers. There is a sign in the men's rest room that literally tells people not to wash their feet or wash dishes in the sink. Oh yeah, the sign says don't shave, either. (See pic.) Just weird. And that sign has been up 2-3 years. If you need signs like that, then you probably also need 24/7 security. There is a water fountain at the rest area but it is IN THE REST ROOM RIGHT BESIDE THAT SIGN. If you can, drive to a different rest stop.

Blue Star Highways are a tribute to the Nations armed forces who served in World War II. There are nice flowers and it is attended to by the Garden Club of Illinois. Plenty of signs and in particular one says Illinois remembers POWs and MIAs. Very evident that, at least in concept, the sacrifices that servicemen and women make are important in the state of Illinois. However, in the past week our Nation has lost a number of lives as our military withdraws from Afghanistan. In fact it's been one of the largest single losses of service lives in many years. While this is a nicely manicured clean rest area, someone has neglected to lower the flag to half staff, a point which I brought up to a worker, extremely politely and respectfully, here at this rest area. It is this reason, this in attention to an extraordinarily important and significant detail, that I extend a one star rating to this otherwise very nice rest area.
