How does it feel to a have an up-close and personal encounter with two exotic pink flamingos?…read moreNature lovers can find out during the exclusive "Flamingle" experience at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory -- believed to be the only butterfly facility in the entire United States that also houses flamingos. "Flamingle" is a separate event from the regular Key West Butterfly ticket, which gives you access to the popular conservatory, which is 5,000-square-foot glass-domed rainforest-like habitat where there are about 1,000 butterflies from 50 to 60 species flying around. The flamingos, a male and female, are called Rhett and Scarlett in honor of their coloration and obvious affection for each other. Coincidentally, since the species is often associated with love and romance, these prized wading birds were born on Valentine's Day 2012. They arrived at the Key West facility in July 2013 -- and as they grew, their colorful pink plumage, social nature and foot-patting "dance" in their wading pond made them visitor favorites. During the hour-long "Flamingle" encounter, we had a chance to take many pictures with them and just enjoy the beautiful green space...just a great experience. Each experience is limited to 6 participants total, so book ahead if you are planning to do this !!!

It's mission is to inspire visitors to preserve the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys & enjoy the natural resource responsibly. The center is open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:00 until 4:00. Admission is free, and so is parking, making this a convenient stop. With more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits guests can learn about the native plants & animals in the Keys. Exhibits highlight the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, 4 national wildlife refuges & 3 national parks, including Dry Tortugas, which is on an island about 70 miles from Key West. We started with a 20-minute movie about the Keys' fragile ecosystems and then explore the center on a self-paced tour. Staff & volunteers are also on-site to answer questions. Notable exhibits include a replica of NOAA's Aquarius, the only underwater ocean laboratory in the world, and a spotlight on the long maritime history of shipwrecks inside the sanctuary's waters. After 2022 renovations there is now a mangrove exhibit where guests can play animal noises & guess which animal made the sound, an area with microscopes so you can watch coral close-up, and a paddleboard photo-op that feels as though we are paddling through the mangroves.

It's not large and it's not overly impressive but it is interesting; more in the sense of it's actual history and not what they have to offer. The real deal is the place was, to put it bluntly, a turtle slaughterhouse... Sea Turtles were brought in from the boats and loaded into the building (that sits over the water as part of the docks). They canned the meat and also made Turtle Soup. Key West no longer processes sea turtles into meals but the history is here... Regardless of whether you love or just like it, it is free, so when life gets closer to normal, swing in for a peep.

Also, I love that this museum wants you to touch everything! There are signs saying "put on this hat and jacket" to see how you'd look as a firefighter, and "sit in this chair" to pretend to be the fire chief. It was honestly so refreshing and cool after having been in so many other Key West museums where you can't touch anything. The staff were so friendly and helpful, excited to tell stories about the Key West fire department and history. Plus, the museum has a ghost...I mean, it doesn't get better than that!

The museum is dedicated to preserving Key West's firefighting legacy and features unique artifacts and exhibits in a historic firehouse. We arrived in the morning on a weekday and were the only patrons during the time we were there! The guides were so friendly and really engaged with our toddler who was ecstatic to pretend to drive the vintage firetruck. There is SO much fun memorabilia and it was very cool to see and learn about the firefighting history of Key West!

The extensive amount of beautiful artwork created by many ever-changing and talented artists is tastefully displayed on two floors of this beautiful gallery and we felt it was all reasonably priced. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and they will ship any purchases to your home at a reasonable price. We greatly appreciated the fine job Nancy (a greatly-talented local artist herself) did with padding our artwork so we could take it home on the Key West Express shuttle boat with us and it was a delight to converse with her. We'll be coming here each time we visit and we can't wait to display our new artwork in our home!

We just didn't seem to ever run into one in Key West. So we checked out this gallery on Duvall. A huge selection of reprints and original art works, in different mediums. We found a nice watercolor of Hemingway's house to add to our stair collection for a great price.
