With a family member in the US Navy, we have visited Naval Base San Diego numerous times over the last decade. Once on base, the shear size of the facility is impressive. Destroyers, frigates, littoral combat ships, amphibious assault ships, and support ships line the docks. But the base is more than ships. It is also a wide range of amenities, including housing, gyms, dining options, and recreational areas that provide life conveniencess for those stationed here. We've enjoyed movies, bowling, and eating here on base. Base access is restricted. Parking is limited. read more

Pass and decal check point for contractors need to improve. The vehicle check has one inspector per lane while there are 5-6 personnel inside the booth on their cell phone. In my opinion that is very unsat. read more

Stationed here from 1999-2003 and loved every minute of my time in San Diego. The traffic sucks, parking isn't the greatest but it is San Diego. A lot of history on this base, one of the greatest MWR orgs and of course the people are awesome. read more

**Largest Naval Base in the West Coast** Access to the base is limited to service member, government employee and contractors. Visitors can be escorted onto base with personnel who have access but must remain with them at all times. This a Military Installation so photographs of Naval Ships, entrance gates...is no allowed to ensure the safe guarding of security. Seeing the Active Naval Ships up close is a privilege not a right, remember these are War Ships. But if you have the chance or opportunity to see them up close I would take advantage just be mindful of the security hazard you can cause by posting photos or videos. read more

Not allowed to take any photos of the base or the ships or anything sorry about that it's considered be top-secret so damn top-secret why can everybody see the fence or something they can tell you about it though they are there by five or six restaurants in that place that are McDonald's, Subway, Boules bagel sandwich shop ,pizza Chinese food joint Starbucks coffee house. These are just the restaurant they'll have a movie theater there but you can't get on the base unless you're military or a contractor that's all it is is really that top-secret specially if you work on the base. read more

Best in the Fleet - terrible Parking since I can remember but nothing wrong with this Base.

Navy cruises closed both the gym and smoke pit on a daily basis, and denied access for hours. Transversing the vessel required operating too many doors, even when trying to conduct a simple task like washing one's clothes. Multiple machines (washers/dryers) were either finicky or outright inoperable, whereas the fully functional machines were highly coveted or continuously in use. Though, the sleeping and dining accommodations were a pleasant reprieve from the arduous gambit that ensued navigating the various walkways. Decent views. read more

After a long night time drive from the Bay Area to Naval Base San Diego I was exhausted. I downed some coffee to help keep both feet planted on the ground due to lack of sleep. Anyhow the family was super excited when my son's ship pulled in for the homecoming as were other families and loved ones. We had not seen him for about six months... As much as I love NAS North Island on Coronado, I must say, I'm more familiar with this one and their commissary is awesome. Of course you're not gonna get the views or the serenity of Coronado, but if I had to choose to stay on base, I'd choose this one because the Navy Lodge here is much cleaner (the one on Coronado has rooms which smell damp and musky due to the moisture from its proximity to the water). The NEX here is nice too, but not as nice as North Island's, but they're supposed to get a new one soon so I'm keeping my eyes open for that one. There are loads of great Mexican restaurants within a short driving distance of this base so it's very convenient. I can't say the same for North Island since everything good is across that bridge! But you win some, you lose some. Hubby wants the views of the ocean, I want the convenience of things nearby. read more

I have to take classes on this base every so often. And since I am a govt employee I don't have to go to pass and decal office which seems to have the majority of issues. I typically get there early enough to find parking. There is a McDonalds there and a Subway for lunch and a Brueggers for my morning coffee fix. Oh and a little convenience store for snacks, sandwiches, toiletries ciggies, etc. That about covers my enthusiasm for this base. read more

Can't complain about pier 13, vending machines have been stocked for the most part the past 5 years. Nearby food, gym is close, and plenty of bins. Sometimes there is an odd smell filling the air when coming in at 0600 but it goes away in the afternoon. Left my bicycle there the whole deployment, it was still there when I got back so I guess no bike thieves. Used to have a roach problem a few years ago but that cleared up after my ship left for deployment, go figure. Pier 7 on the other hand is GARBAGE. read more

Relatively large NEX exchange here loaded to the brim with Filipino ladies buying cosmetics. Decent souvenir selection inside. Supposedly a new commissary has opened - as large as a Costco. I have not checked that out. Only been on the dry side of this base. Perhaps some day I will make it across Harbor Dr to the wet side. read more

This might be my least favorite base I've gone to so far; but if that changes I'll update later. My husband got orders for here and people warned me that he'd have to go to work 2 hours early just to get parking. Yeah they weren't joking. We only had to find parking once and that was a royal pain. My main issue is actually getting into the base. It took 52 minutes to drive 500ft off the freeway ramp onto 32nd if that gives you an idea how congested this place gets in the AM. If you don't have to take gate 6 (Nimitz/Main gate) then DON'T. Wet side gate 13 is supposed to be open from 0500-0800 and is less congested. Even gate 7 is faster than gate 6. (Don't know the hours to that one sorry) They really need people out directing traffic sometimes because jerks block the intersection and then folks get angry and yeah, it can be scary at times. Inside the base there are way too many speed bumps at times and not enough in other places. Construction closures on some roads so you have to go around that cause a lot of stress come exodus time around 1600. Speaking of, take Gate 6 when leaving (Nimitz/Main gate) I know it sounds crazy but most of the people on the wet side leave through Gate 7 and it's backed up in each direction. Gate 6 will get you out in half the time! Not to mention some of the folks on duty really need an attitude check, I'll leave it at that. read more

I'll just repeat what the others have mentioned..go here for cheap items without tax, if you have the military privileges. - The Navy Exchange (NEX, military dept. store) is the biggest of all the military exchanges I believe. I've been to other exchanges in San Diego and the Exchange near Las Vegas, and they don't compare. For certain items like electronics, makeup, and underwear, you're better off here than at Wal-Mart or Target. These two stores, however, sell video games, DVDs, and music for less. The video game, clothing, shoe and toy selection aren't that great either. Adjacent to NEX are the flower shop, optical shop, barber shop, food court, watch repair, UPS, MWR (to purchase park tickets at the military price), and a liquor store all in one building. Phew! The NEX optometrist and her staff are helpful and friendly. - I LOVE the new Commissary! Shoppers are now able to choose from more Asian groceries and organic foods. More brands are available. The store is more spacious, new carts replaced the beat up ones, and more self checkout stands are available. - Gas is cheaper at this and any other military base than at most civilian gas stations. There are many days when base gas is priced similarly to Arco gas. Sometimes, it's best to just pump gas at Arco if you're in the area, rather than drive out of your way to a base. - The Base theatre plays two free movies nightly, with matinee showings on the weekends. What sucks is when a much-anticipated movie premieres here. I couldn't watch Harry Potter 5 before the nationwide premiere, even after waiting in a long line for hours because the theatre could only handle so many people. - Past the theatre is an indoor swimming pool, with an outdoor pool right beside it. - The bowling alley charge less than civilian places do. Cosmic bowling is available too. Because of how playing is cheap, this place gets packed at night. - Near the bowling is the gym which is free to those with military privileges. You can find an outdoor swimming pool and a basketball court here too. The only downside is how this place is small, yet crowded. - At the corner of 32nd and Harbor lies the base chapel. The chapel serves both Protestants and Catholics. If you're a military Catholic parent who wants to send your child to CCD, CCD here and at other military parishes are free. - There are representatives from Southwestern College, City College, and National University available on this base if you have military privileges, and interested in getting your degree. - Saturday mornings on the base's "dry side" parking lots are a safe way to practice driving. I should know. My dad took me here once I received my driver's permit. :) I have so many memories as a Navy brat, especially here in 32nd St. Naval Station. I'm so sad that I no longer have my military ID for said privileges. read more

Yes the parking and traffic is terrible but here is a tip GET THERE EARLY!!!!!!! so you have enough time to find parking and yes you might have to walk a little. There are two parking Structures and there is a lot of parking along the fence next to the trolley tracks on the dry side. I'm not on the wet side much except when I go see a movie so I have no idea how the parking is. As for the traffic all I can say is be patient read more

Having moved to SD from Great Lakes, this base is the best I've been to so far. Besides being in San Diego and having the best climate in the country, it offers great amenities for service members and their families. What I like: 1. Commissary - the prices and selection on produce and meats are great. It's HUGE and clean. Love the deli and bakery where they have a great selection of deli meats and cheeses. I love getting sushi here. There are great deals, you can use coupons, and sometimes they have promotions for additional savings in the circular/Ad flyer. 2. Nex - Wet side; great service from the alterations dept. They have quick turn around time when it comes hemming and putting on patches. Dry side; tax free on high end items is a wonderful thing. Every service member and their family needs to take advantage of this. 3. Gas Station - slightly better prices compared to public gas stations. 4. Admiral Prout Field House - Love the pool for lap swimming. Love it when it's empty and I have the gym to myself. 5. Base Theater - FREE. What more do I need to say? Well, I love the double features and the advance screenings. 6. Anchors' buffet - I would come here more often for the BBQ and seafood buffet but I am afraid I will gain 25 lbs in one year. 7. Fleet and Family Services - Very friendly and helpful staff. I urge all families to take advantage of their services; job training, education programs, referrals and other resources. 8. Trolley station is easily accessible. What I don't like: 1. Waiting in line - the lines here can be long; at the commissary, getting gas, just getting past the gates can take some time. It's best to go at non peak times (particularly pay day). It's not that bad, but I get impatient sometimes. 2. One time I was in the theater and something brushed up against my foot. I immediately looked down and jumped onto my seat. I saw something not so small, furry, and fast racing away from me! 3. For the longest time the commissary did not have cart corrals, but when they finally put them in customers still act like they don't know what they are used for. Come on, it's the NAVY show some kind of manners and quit being so lazy folks. read more

There are three distinct areas of this base: The Wet Side, The Dry Side, and the Shopping Area. I was stationed at this base once upon a time so let me break it on down for you: WET SIDE: This is where all of the ship are moored. There are at least 13 piers located on this side of the base. This is where most of the shops and industrial buildings are located. There used to be a KFC/Taco Bell but has since closed down for some reason. There is a little Sailor hangout spot near Pier 2 where the old Club Metro use to be. Also in the vicinity is the Base Theater. Near Piers 6 and 7 is the Fleet Navy Exchange where you can buy your uniform items, a McDonalds, a Subway restaurant, and a UPS store. The base Post Office is located right across the street from it. Further on down the wet side near Pier 10 is a smaller gym that has a basketball court and a small cardio/weight room area. Further down near Pier 13 is the Well Deck where you can play some arcade games, watch television, use the free wi-fi, and eat some food. DRY SIDE: This is where the schools and barracks are located. There are numerous amount of barracks that are located here, including Palmer Hall and Snyder Hall. There is a NEX Minimart located across the street from Donnelly Hall but will soon be relocated across the street from the Bowling Center. There are two fitness centers: The Olde Gym near the main gate and Admiral Prout Fieldhouse which to me is the better of the two. The Medical and Dental Clinic are located here as well. There's the Bowling Alley located near Vesta Street and Norman Scott Road. The Recyard located near the Main Gate is where Single Sailors can go to make calls, use the computers, play video games, or watch movies and television. The Pacific Beacon towers are located further down the street with a Subway restaurant located inside. SHOPPING AREA: Technically part of the Dry Side, but distinct enough to be considered its own area. This is where the Navy Exchange, Commissary, and the Navy Lodge are located. There are two Autoport gas stations: There is one across from the Main Gate at 32nd Street which closes around 9:00 I believe, and the other is at 28th Street near the gate. That one is open 24 hours. There's also some auto repair shops here as well. The Navy Lodge is also located closer to the 28th Street entrance. The Exchange and Commissary are located closer to the 32nd Street entrance although both are accessible from 28th Street. The 28th Street gate is open 24 hours. This is a pretty big base. Lines can be long coming into the gate on workdays. All gates are usually open at 5:00 a.m. to alleviate the traffic flow during the morning. The exchange and commissary area are packed on weekends and paydays as well so keep that in mind. All in all this is a good base and they are constantly renovating to make the quality of life easier and better for Sailors and their families. read more

ACTIVE DUTY REVIEW: I've been stationed out here in Naval Base San Diego for about three years now and I love it. Even back in boot camp and service school, people would always say nice things about NBSD how its a better command has better morale and just a better base than the rest of the bases out there. There are two sides on the base Wet Side and Dry Side. Wet Side is where all the ships can be and shore commands can be located at and Dry Side is where the barracks and the schools are located at. The base has plenty of recreational facilitites such as movie theatre, bowling alley, bar, lounges, swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts, parks, gyms and more. There are plenty of things to do in here when you're bored and you dont feel like spending money and going out in town. The base and the facilities are very well maintained as well. read more

Three stars because traffic is always terrible here. Parking is just the same, horrible. You would think that with all the people that come to work here on the daily, they would have some form of parking structure to accommodate all the cars looking for parking EVERY SINGLE DAY. But no, instead we drive around for significant amounts of time just to find somewhere to park, often a half a mile to a mile or more away. Good exercise though, right? read more

This review will be for Pass and ID. A necessary evil to access this facility. Your base needs to be secure. I get it. You have procedures to follow and checks and balances. I get that too. Sometimes... Well in government more than sometimes, things break or don't work. Check. Meetings are a good medium to pass word to everyone. I have no problem with the staff having meetings. That being said, if something does go wrong maybe, MAYBE, you should consider a contingency plan. I've never experienced problems getting onto a base like I have here, with a bonus runaround to go with it. First attempt to go on base, drive up to the gate (dry side) with License and VA medical ID. "Sorry we can't accept those to get on base. Go to pass and ID and they'll get you a day pass. They turn me around, I go to pass and ID (a short drive) and they simply tell me "We don't do that anymore." As in "You just can't come on base, period." Cool, my first wasted one hour drive from home to base. A few months go by, my school offers a class on base that I need. Anxiety sets in. I email with my counselors and they send over some base access paperwork for me to fill out. Apparently one day access exists again now. So I go to pass and ID with this paperwork and two forms of ID. "We don't have an e-mail vouching for you from your sponsor." ...Of course you don't. So I get my sponsor to send me and the ID office the e-mail again. "This isn't from the person we usually get it from, hold on." *Sirens in the distance* There's a fire on base somewhere and dispatch apparently controls emergency response and pass and ID. Pass and ID functions are put on hold. I'm told that if they don't come back online before 1530... it's tough shit and I wasted another trip. They come online thankfully and I'm able to get on. The next visit for my class went without issue. Third class, show up at pass and ID. "Systems are down, we can't do anything for anyone." REALLY?! This is the second time I drive to San Diego and back for literally no reason. Walked in at noon today and the staff is having a meeting, but do they let you know that...Nah. I sign their stupid sign in pad and sit there staring blankly for 30 seconds at them until someone (who just got done chit chatting jokingly with the person standing next to them) offers assistance. Just kidding, no assistance offered. "We are having a meeting right now, you need to go wait outside in the middle line." Sweet. Ten minutes later I get in and get the damn pass. The worst part is the oh so genuine lack of giving a shit by the people who work there. It feels like they are giddy to tell you that they can't or won't do their job, and it makes me furious. Knowing that I'm pretty tolerant for a veteran, I really hope they figure their jobs out before someone trying to get base access loses their mind in that office. It's literally EASY to get on Pendleton and MCRD, in my experience the Marine Corps follows the rules a little bit more to the T than the Navy does. Why the hell is it so difficult to get onto this base without a hassle? Please... for the love of Obama, fix this place. read more

This is a pretty big base. There's a wet side, a dry side and separate base for the main exchange and commissary. The gas station is in between the 3 bases and it's cheap too. Inside the bases, it's pretty secure, lots of military police patrolling 24/7. Outside the base and the surrounding areas, especially near the trolley stations...not so much; I wouldn't be walking alone at night in this neighborhood. Inside the base, you should maintain the posted speed limit signs. They just renovated the main exchange which now has 2 separate stores, a clothing and electronics store that has 2 stories. The other exchange has home decor, some furniture and some snacks and liquor. The commissary is also brand new, bigger and better than before. And they're currently re-designing the food court too. On the dry side base, there is a bowling alley, the galley for food, and a lot of commands, training facilities and the gym too. A small golf course is here too. The wet side base has a small exchange, some food restaurants such as KFC, Taco Bell, McDonalds and a small food court by the small exchange. Starbucks just opened and it's across from the theater. And of course, that's where all the big ships are located...in the wet base. Parking here will suck on various times especially if there are a lot of ships here at the same time. From the wet base, you get a good view of Coronado and parts of IB. They do have daily passes for civilians who want to get on the base for a quick tour, but you still need to have a military/DoD member with you if you want to take advantage of the NEX and commissary privileges. read more

There are so many empty spots, but each and every one of them "Reserved" spray painted on the ground and if it's completely blank, it still might not be a free space because there's a signed posted up at the front of the spot stated reserved. I was stationed here from December 25,1987- July 21,1991. Yes! The day after Christmas was my reporting date to my first command the USS Copeland (FFG-25) as a deck seaman in layman terms I was at the bottom of the totem pole. And I mean the bottom and just when I thought my life couldn't get any better that's when I found out that we were going to the Persian gulf that January and ended going on a couple more deployments and a few drug enforcement operations down south in Mexico and up and down the southern California coast line. read more

Gotta love the discounted prices and TAX-FREE shopping. When SD tax has risen to almost 10%... it hurts! Been shopping/bowling/going to church/checking out the fine Navy men at the 32nd street base since I was a kid, and it never disappoints. It's true, there can be annoying people shopping the NEX alongside you, but can you really complain when you walk out with your high-end electronics/designer sunglasses/Michael Kors/Coach bag at almost half off and NO TAX? I decided to take a vacation from Las Vegas to San Diego and decided to book a two night stay at the naval base to save $$ on hotel expenses. When booking my hotel reservation I was never advised to have current registration and insurance info to provide at the front gate to gain entry nor was advised that I would have to drive to an entire different navy location to obtain a temporary password by providing those documents to enter the base. Don't get me wrong, I should always have current registrAtion and insurance in my vehicle at all times. But, on my behalf, I forgot my registration at home and my insurance was out dated lol. But if I was advised I needed all this info to check in I would've checked for everything before driving 6hrs to San Diego. Overall, I was able to enter the base and check into my hotel but prior to arriving I decided to call the hotel and cancel my reservation so I could check into another hotel. I called the customer service number and the female rep was very rude. I advised her of the situation I was dealing with and she told me with an attitude, "that's unfortunate, but, our systems are down and you wouldn't be able to check in tonight anyway!". I asked, "will I get a refund?" and she said "no, you'll just be turned away." Overall, the experience was horrible do to all of the misscommunication, driving around, and me just being completely exhausted from a long night time drive. I was able to enter base and check in last night but cancelled the rest of my weekend stay here and searched for another hotel off base. read more

Naval Base San Diego, or NBSD, is one place I try to avoid as much as possible, only because of my memories growing up in and around it. I like the new commissary (a big-ass grocery store for you civilian types), the largest one of its kind in the world. The Navy Exchange doesn't always have the cheapest prices around, but no sales tax, hell yeah! I have grown to like the new Easy-turf placed all throughout the base, better than dying brown grass, especially at the track near the big gym (forget what it's called). The barbers here always give me some whacked haircuts. I guess it's because I try to go against the grain by not getting some kind of skin-cut or high & tight, and yet they do it anyway. Overall, I'm glad I don't work on this base because I like my own just fine. And like the other reviews mention, yes, I used to bowl here too some 16 years ago. Fun times. read more

Sailors and ships, what more do you want?!?!?! Okay, this was supposed to be a one line review, but to be fair, I've been stationed in San Diego since 2003. 32nd Street Naval Base has changed a lot since I've been here! There is a lot to do for those of you who have access to base, such as the Waterfront Cafe, movie theatre or all of the gyms both "wet side" and "dry side". For those who suggested a parking structure for our base, from what I've heard, the land is not up to specs to be able to build one. Parking used to be worse actually and is slowly improving(repainting lines, tearing down buildings). It is what it is. read more

Aside from terrible parking and the horrible traffic in the morning, this base is actually pretty decent. It has a couple food options on base, just in case you're in a rush. Otherwise there's a ton of places to go in the surrounding area, including the big NEX. It's also a pretty easy base to navigate, for being so big.
