NASCAR SAN DIEGO 2026 (3 stars) SUNDAY. Reserved Seats at T3 (per ticket ~$300) - Experience: cool - Food: not very good - Seats: stunning - Excitement Level: meh :: SECURITY :: People complaining about how the policies were different when compared to other NASCAR events. It's an ACTIVE military base of course it's going to be more strict. Lots of security EVERYWHERE - police, security, service wo/men, DEA (with open carry bug guns), snipers, etc. :: LOGISTICS :: Went on Sunday, the main event for the 250 Audril Race. Everyone heard Saturday was a hotness with traffic, food and water were running out, big clusterf*. In prep, everyone had plan to take ferries on Sunday. Not very bright! 30k+ people riding 2 ferries every 30m and then a mile on your own to get to base?! We were downtown at 8:15AM and saw zero traffic in the bridge but heard of long lines at the ferries. Took an Uber (10m), got dropped off infront of base and in line by 8:30AM, line started moving at 8:45a (gates open at 9) in by 9:01am. Coming home... of just crossing that bridge, different story. A lot of people left early to not deal with it, a lot of people stayed late to not deal with it. Uber took awhile to get because the driver cancels the ride and you had to walk away from base to lessen the traffic. :: LAYOUT :: Yellow zone, Green Zone, Red Zone. The reserved seats were in Yellow Zone. Those with general admission could walk around but could not go into Reserve seating areas. Each zone was open to GA but each zone also has sections of Reserved Seating. Green Zone is where there were so many people because it's open to GA and those with Reserve Seating - it's the start/finish line, many vendors, store, beer garden. My reserved Seats weee at T3 aka The Carrier Corner which was quite a site to see! Big naval carrier with sailors on it and behind is downtown. :: EXPERIENCE :: The crowd was definitely not locals. Many mid-west and south people with accents. Hardcore NASCAR followers who love the sport. The only time I found this exciting was 1) when it started 2) when there was a crash or spinout 3) the end. All those hours getting a 5 second glimpse of the racers about ~30x was boring. You literally have to be a fan of a racer to enjoy the sport - I chose an underdog and saw some ahead moments which was exciting but after that, not my cup of tea. Honestly, went because why not it was the first ever NASCAR in SAN DIEGO and on an ACTIVE military base. Not sure if I'll go again. read more

My nephew came home from his 10 month deployment on The USS Carl Vinson. This is his second welcome home from deployment celebration. I get chills every time! My heart goes out to all on board especially the young men and women that leave their homes and families sometimes for the very first time in their lives for several months to protect our country! Naval Base Coronado - Great reception area right next to The World Famous IBAR - Public Services & Government Near Me - San Diego, California

Access to the base is limited to service member, government employee and contractors. Visitors can be escorted onto base with personnel who have access but must remain with them at all times. This a Military Installation so photographs of Naval Ships, Aircraft, entrance gates...is not allowed to ensure the safe guarding of security. Seeing the Active Naval Ships and Aircraft up close is a privilege not a right, remember these are War Ships and Aircraft. But if you have the chance or opportunity to see them up close I would take advantage just be mindful of the security hazard you can cause by posting photos or videos. There is a Commissary on base but not as large as the main on in San Diego Naval Base. read more

I've been to many navy bases and let me tell you, there are huge differences depending on where the naval base is located. Pearl Harbor in Hawaii is huge and really nice in terms of the NEX, but this one isn't bad either. There is an 18 hole golf course, bowling alley, movie theater, restaurants, and the NEX is nice too (not as nice as Pearl Harbor of course) and their navy lodge is more a resort than lodge. Located just a mile over the bridge, this particular NAS is the birthplace of Naval Aviation and home of the USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan. Like the other reviewer said, getting based here is like winning the lottery and it's not far from that. This base is really lovely! Great views and full of amenities! We went bowling at the bowling alley and it's really cheap! Every day except for Saturday before 5pm it costs $1.50 per game. It's a really great way to spend some quality time with the kids for not much money. Shoe rental is $1.75. I guess these are the perks of having that ID card eh?? The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars is that the food places on base stop delivering pretty early so if you're feeling lazy and want to order something to be delivered, you're basically SOL. Also, there is a gas station, but it was cheaper to get gas from the Valero not far from the gates. Honestly, it used to be super cheap to buy gas on base -- on some bases that's still true -- but these days, shop around!! Other than that would definitely return here when we are in the area. read more

I love Coronado Island and I can't believe for all the number of times I've visited I've never stopped into the base-wow I was really missing out! After being at Sigonella in Sicily this base is a close second to my all time favorites. Gorgeous private beach, NEX to shop for beach goodies and a food court to grab a snack. A McDonalds is on base, a bowling alley and a nice hotel beachside (if you can get a reservation). Don't miss! read more

I love it here. Probably one of the greatest looking and overall best Navy Base in the entire Naval Branch. Most likely due to the Beaches, Fitness Centers, golf course, and the various additional amount of other recreational activities. I come here all the time to come to the rarely crowded beach, Breakers Beach, to enjoy the bonus of being stationed in the area. If any military personnel are within the area, highly suggest you check it out. read more

I can understand what folks that work here are talking about. I would hate to commute through the front gate on a daily basis. But aside from that, this is a nicely spread out base with all the services you would expect; nice golf course, good sized Exchange, large commissary, movie theater (always free), bowling alley, arts & crafts, auto hobby shop, excellent lodging including beach front rooms. The base is nice and flat and surrounded on three sides by water. And you're on Coronado Island so the location is perfect (get a bike, get off base and explore). Nice views of downtown San Diego across the bay. read more

Now for being a military base, this IS as good as it gets. My husband and I both grew up military brats and have lived all over, been to bases all over the world. Some are for sure better than others but this one takes the cake. On Coronado Island which is simply stunning itself. The base is big, has all the amenities and is so well maintained, it looks like a big park. Currently working on the base in Barstow, when my husband saw this base, he immediately said if he gets a job here, we're moving, its just that nice. I wouldn't mind. I was just there for 2014 Fleet Week. The base is nice. I've only been to a handful of bases, so I think it ranks up there. Fleet Week is fun, they give you free tours of the USS Nimitz, USS Somerset, & the USS Pickney. Though the wait to get on the tour bus to take you to the ships is not fun. But hey, its free so suck it up. Since these are "active" ships I understand that we can't tour everywhere, but lets just say one tour was disappointing compared to the others. Can you guess which one? Aboard the USS Nimitz, you come aboard and get to see the hanger. Then you're allowed to ride the plane elevator. Finally, your on the flight deck with two dummy F-18 Hornets and a crane. That said, seeing some of the crew do their jobs is neat. And also seeing some of the crew leaving for shore leave through a door on to the hanger deck only to be sent back through that door is funny. Obviously the Navy wants only their best dressed working. Aboard the USS Somerset, you get a guided tour of the ship including the bridge. The story of the USS Somerset is touching. You will see a bunch of memorabilia for the crash of Flight 93. The Admiral of the 11th Strikeforce came aboard and that was a site to see. Everyone gets on edge while he does this walk through. Thank you for the tour Ensign Jones, from Louisiana. Aboard the USS Pickney "the best destroyer in the Navy" per Alex Foley, they also give you a guided tour. First off the is the weapons system, then you go on to the bridge, and finally they show you the side torpedoes. Serving on s destroyer must be one tight fit. Also being an active base, seeing crewmen carrying M-16s is a little intimidating. They are apparently always walking around the ships/base keeping guard. Even the guy riding the bus had his had on his holster, on the moving bus full of civilians. There were several helicopters on display by the race track/entrance to the ship tours. Along with a drone helicopter and other service vehicles. I love that we can tour the ships for free and skip the $25.00 race track. Thank you United States Government and big thank you to everyone who has served or is currently serving. Traffic, Traffic, Traffic. The in and outs of NBC are horrible. If you work on base you know what I'm talking about. The island is set up with driving limitations to herd traffic up fourth and down third. It' s a bit painful to get on and off the island. The bowling alley offers dollar games on Mondays. Of course, the exchange and commissary offer great prices and selection. read more

Large spread out island. Nothing too special here really, other than dealing with Coronado traffic. This place is really nice, pretty new, we gave a really nice Jr. Suite over looking to pool and the beach. Only $84.00 The people are nice, they had a meet and greet here, so you can meet other people here in the hotel. I think we will be making more trips here in the future. read more

I like this base - I've visited a few times now over the past few years. Traffic is moderate since it's on the island but it seems to be managed well as most roads basically just lead to the base on the far side of the island. It's beautiful with lovely weather, decent streets, a nice NEX, and water views. I visited Breakers Beach and the Lodge while in town and was impressed by both. It's much nicer than my base - Norfolk - so 4 stars from me! read more

I wish I could say that Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale and I went way back. Yeah, it's far fetched, but I still don't know what I'd do if I was somehow caught in his presence today. Shake the hand of a guy who served as a fighter pilot in two major wars (WWII and Vietnam), or just stand and salute the highest ranking naval officer who was also a resident at the Hanoi Hilton (alongside McCain), a guy who received the Medal of Honor (while he was alive!), and a guy who rather reluctantly ended up on Ross Perot's Independent ticket in 1992. Shake hands or salute, this guy gets nothing but my respect. And now, his namesake gets bestowed on the Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Naval Base down in Coronado. Coronado is where he spent his later years until his death. Though it's not as big as its neighbor (Naval Base San Diego), I think it has the best amenities a base could offer! The commissary features everything that Ralphs has, but more. And the NEX Exchange is like a Target, Walmart, and Macy's rolled up into one. But what really makes this base special is the Pizza Parlor (home of the best pizza in and around San Diego) and the giganormous movie theater (seats more than your IMAX) with the biggest and bestest screen and sound you could possibly ask for. They've also got a wonderful Navy Lodge near the water (MUCH nicer than Courtyard Marriott), tons of racquetball courts, and plenty of places to go running. Makes me want to join the Navy and get stationed there! But overall, Naval Bases are kick ass not only for the amenities, but for the sure fact that they're living, breathing entities that serve much higher purposes than just getting your groceries tax free at the commissary. Civilians can't even be allowed to know, and the speculation makes me even giddier! Another cool thing about Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale: The "B" stands for "Bond." So yeah, the guy's name is "James Bond" Stockdale. Pretty cool, huh? Hahaha, there's really a review for a Naval installation?!! How can anybody truly review this, especially if you're a civilian?! I guess you can complain about the traffic it creates, or the military in general? My old man served at NAS North Island, stationed with the VS "RAG" squadron that used to fly the S-3s out of there, and when he retired he became a Jet Propulsion Unit Supervisor for NAVTEC and stayed another 15 or so years before transferring to MCAS Miramar. As a teenager I helped him move his office from one building to another. He used to take my brothers and I to the pier and we would stare in amazement at the mammoth carriers stationed there at the time like the USS Ranger and USS Constellation. I vividly remember the sun setting and colors being called. As a young man I too joined the Navy and found myself at NAS North Island/Coronado picking up the Air Wing before our West Pac, and then again flying into North Island from NAS Whidbey Island when I was flying with VP squadrons. I remember spending the whole day in Coronado after our P-3 was downed due to some malfunction. I roamed around base and even went to my Dad's office... unfortunately he had left early, probably to play golf knowing him! We ended up going to the Del Taco on base and overdosed on crappy mexican food. As a kid, and a young man, I loved going to Coronado. There is just something about this old base. My old man used to tell me about how the Silver Strand used to be (or still is) loaded with explosives so if the fleet had to get out to sea fast, they could just blow the strand and bypass instead of having to go around the harbor. I remember driving cross country from Virginia to San Diego to meet the Nimitz in Coronado. It was 5am as I was driving across the Coronado bridge and guess who is in the lane right next to me? My Dad! I had not seen him in two years since I had joined the Navy. He was on his way to work too! It was soo hilarious...I kept honking at him and he wouldn't look at me...he held a stern, stoic face that I perceived to read as "you dumb ass stop honking!!!" When he finally looked over and realized it was me his eyes widened like saucers and he gave me the biggest smile! Hahah, ahhh that was classic. I remember the look in his eyes while talking to him by the pier,now as an adult, and a sailor...I think that's the first time I felt like my old man was proud of me. I miss the S-3s flying over, making their vacuum suck noises, and I miss the the SH-3s, then SH-60s, and I miss the Navy Exchange and.......okay okay, I getting sentimental. Barf. Traffic, Military, War Mongers, Liberal, Conservative, Hippy, Peace Lovin, Tree huggin....whatever... I HEART NAS North Island/Naval Base Coronado!!!!! Ah, the navy base. Currently the only place I've ever been kicked out of in memory. (although the Pearl Hotel might count too) The story: I was driving a friend from the airport to pick up her husband's truck which was on the base. She's a navy wife, and her husband was doing some naval exercise down off the coast of Mexico. She needed the car, and needed to be driven there. I drove to the base, parked in teh creepy dirt lot, then walked in with her on base. The security guard accepted that I was wlaking her to her car without a problem, and we walked and talked as we crossed the massive, cavernous base for about five or ten minutes until we were signaled by a guy in a jeep, who asked for our IDs. As I'd shown my driver's license to the guy @ the entrance, I thought it'd be fine, but apparently that was a no-no. I was politely, but firmly escorted by auto outside the base and told to wait for my friend to return. From what I saw, 'twas a pleasant base. I'm sure it fits all of your aquatic military needs. It also kicks out Teej. :) No hard feelings, Coronado. read more

This is a great base other than the horrendous traffic you sit in before (0600) and after work (1500). I still wonder why they designed this base the way they did; the majority of the time, there's one way in and one way out. This makes traffic a major headache and hence the 3 star rating. Other than the traffic, you really can't beat this base. They've got a commissary, NEX, McDonald's, Starbucks, gym, beach, hotel, bowling alley, movie theatre, pizza parlor, and a gas station as well as a auto parts place. You'll find the commissary, gas station (located behind auto building), auto building and NEX on your first right out of the gate. McDonalds will be on the first major left turn. Starbucks is on your second right turn, all the way to the end of the street on your right. The gym is the biggest building next to Starbucks. The bowling alley and theatre are located at the left turn to get to McDonald's and the next left after that. Both the beach and the hotel can be gotten to by turning left at the McDonald's and following that same road all the way until you see the beach and the hotel on your left. read more

Never like to write about where one works but this is in need of a short review. First off departing and arriving on the island during certain hours is a challenge most days. So I would need to leave extra early to make it on time to work at 5am. In comparison to Norfolk Naval Base North Island appears to be more aged then it should. Then again what would we expect when we have nearly perfect weather conditions 90% year around? There are major improvements being conducted in which I am excited to seeing the end result. There's one place I'd like to see torn down and rebuilt from scratch... Base Warehouse Gym. That gym is a piece of work and it needs more then TLC. but overall I love it here in SD and this is where I may call home from now on. read more

I truly enjoy visiting this base. It has a nice Commissary...small, but clean and organized. The same for the NEX. They do have a small gas station and auto garage that are run by an A+ staff. The base has the standard lunch restaurants, Subway, Panda Express, McD's...etc...just to name a few. It also has a bowling alley which is okay. And it shows movies for FREE!!! Can't beat it! They also have a brand new renovated gym/pool and field that is AWESOME! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The streets can get a little confusing, but once you master it, it is worth it! read more

What I love about the Navy Exchange (NEX) I don't have to pay the 8.75 sales tax. The NEX Coronado is not too crowded not like 32nd St., I went here to see if the have a Nikkor 1.4 lens and to get the Apple Time Capsule. Their electronics department have it all; digital cameras, SLR lens, computer, flat screen TV's, BOSE Stereo system, iMac, Airbook, iPod. BluRays, PlayStation, Wii and tons of games. The main store got everything you may need; clothing apparel, kitchen stuff, groceries, wine, bathroom stuff, bags (Coach, Burberry,Michael Kors and Cole Haan), luggages, golf clubs and exercise equipments, kids apparel, shoes, home decor and most the important area the Navy uniform section. It is always nice to checkout what new stuff the NEX have and I love shopping! read more

This base is very nice, and every experience has been nice. I do need to go visit the beaches located on this base! The bowling ally has $1 bowling Monday nights ($1 shoe rentals and $1 drinks too!) The Exchange is nice, and not as busy. We went to buy the new iPhone 5s when everyone else was out, and thankfully they still had a ton in stock! I have not tried going to this base during rush hour, but then again I avoid all bases during rush hour! This base is very convenient to get to from the bridge! read more

I've been on Navy Base Coronado I prefer I've been here several time to worked on Navy ships there a huge! but the best thing I like about That Bass is they have a movie theater there that shows 3 movies at one time all you need to get on this base is a cat card if you are military or a contractor and you are allowed to use the facilities then they have a McDonald's over there which is not and then they have a bowling alley alley ain't that it's really nice restaurant there this is really good pizza but this base is really cute but the only way you get on his base if and only if you have a cat card or if you're military I've walked around on that think they have a really nice Beach if you go way way way in the back past the housing are and yes I do have military housing on the base but they have a really nice beat Beach back there too will you can you stand out there on the beach and you can see the all the views are incredible but no solid that bass is really big you get lost on if you don't know where you're going read more

The base is very nice. The commissary is a bit too small and doesn't carry everything u need if ur coming for groceries for the week. I'd rather go to 32st for that. I work on base so I'm here 5 days a week. Traffic at 2pm is horrendous. read more

The best base in the Navy! It has that feel of classic aviation, the old school Navy, but it's a pretty cool place to work... The golf course and the private beach are a plus too!!! read more
