Great Doctor, But Billing Practices & Staff Are a Serious Problem…read more The doctor himself is excellent--but unfortunately the experience is overshadowed by everything else. This office's billing practices are deeply concerning. The doctor is in-network, yet they use two different NPIs: * 1760410625 (given to patients - appears out-of-network) * 1154401941 (used for billing under BASS Medical Group - in-network) This creates confusion about coverage and raises serious questions about how claims are being represented to insurers. They also push a "health data plan" fee that has increased every year--from $135 in 2022 to $287 now--with no clear explanation of what patients are actually receiving. There was no meaningful advance notice of these increases. The doctors are also the owners/founders of the Well Brain platform, which is run out of the lower floor of their Pleasant Hill office--making the mandatory "data plan" fee even more questionable. The biggest issue is the staff. They are consistently rude, abrasive, and poorly managed, and when you question fees or decline to pay, the behavior becomes coercive and hostile. It feels like patients are being pressured rather than cared for. What makes this worse is that many patients rely on pain management and are already struggling financially--this kind of pressure and unclear billing is especially harmful. If you're dealing with this: * Report concerns to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Medical Board of California, or the California Department of Managed Health Care * Email BASS Medical Group's Performance Management Team at performanceimprovment@bassmedicalgroup.com -- this was the only thing that stopped the harassment in my case Patients deserve transparency and respect--not conflicting NPIs, surprise fee increases, and pressure tactics. Do not sign anything you are not comfortable with, and get all NPIs, fees, and network status in writing before agreeing to care.

Answer is for digital records keeping ....wtf. So I had my epidural shot. 800.00 upfront for my deductible. Unsure why this didn't occur within days of the X-ray a or so month ago? Cannot say this place values people's time, or truly cares about patients pain levels or experiences. He can do nothing for you, don't waste your time as I did. He's all smiles. All happy. All positive vibes and he tells you there's nothing he can do for you, out of his scope of practice to treat anything systemic, so if you have pain in multiple areas, don't bother. While my appointment went well, the standard insurance paper work for a cortisone shot (the most common intervention other than pain meds) was rejected, and no one from the office followed up. There were no follow up notes after my appointment for next steps. My primary seemed very surprised that this routine procedure was denied which makes me suspect that they didn't do the minimal paperwork required. When you call 'the office', you reach someone at the main switchboard who presumably passes on a message which may or may not be returned. In my case, it was not even though I requested that they resubmit the paperwork. Keep in mind that many many people reaching out to a pain management doctor are in excruciating, debilitating pain. When I finally went in, I was barely able to walk and had to lie down during the appointment due to the extreme pain. Currently, I'm repeatedly leaving messages at the switchboard attempting to try to get my cortisone shot months after all medical staff I met with agreed that it was necessary. If you are in an acute, debilitating situation with your pain, I'd recommend you seek someone who runs a more responsive office.

The lady who answers the phone is uber friendly by calling me babe, sweets, sugar and love tells me she never got the referral (even though I am holding the referral in my hand). I have to call back my doctor and ask for the referral again. So I oblige. She also says (in between the constant calling me sugar and sweetie and honey) that I need an MRI within the last year or he won't see me. I have MRI's probably from 2 years ago but whatever. I say I have MRIs and I can email them to her. NOPE. They don't do email because she's too busy to I guess look at email. She wants me to fax her. So she has time for a fax but not email. Not sure what that's about. This is 2026. Not 1986. All this entire time she continually called me honey, and love and sugar and sweets and every other kind of loving nickname you can think of. She doesn't know me at all and yet somehow she thinks this is ok. I am not a Karen BTW. Call me whatever it is you want, but at least help me by doing your job. I got the referral. I got the MRI. I have had pain in my back for 14 years and just need someone to help me. Instead I get "sugar pies" and love dumplings" and "no I am too busy" to look at email. So, yea. You then get an operator who can never help you. Her job is to transfer you. You have been on hold for a 1/2hour because they claim the scheduling department does NOT have a direct line. Sometimes the operator misdirects your call thus after you sit listening to Muzak for a 2nd 1/2hour, you are redirected again so you can again listen to Muzak for a 3rd 1/2 hour. Like others have said, there is a huge amount of paperwork to fill out ahead of time, which I don't mind if it's going to be a thorough appointment. Though the receptionist on the phone for scheduling was incredibly rude, I was pleasantly surprised that I got to see an online provider pretty quickly because my referral was marked as urgent. I saw Dr Alice Huai-Yu Li who was very nice, and who let me know personally ahead of time that she was running late which I appreciated. But she did absolutely nothing for me at the appointment, except refer me to pain psychology. It was supposed to be a long intake appointment but it was cut very short. She said they rarely get patients in my situation and she had researched injections for my type of pain but there was nothing they could do for it. I also have sensitivities to many antidepressants, which was ultimately all she wanted to prescribe for me. My referring doctors were hopeful because Stanford pain clinic is supposed to be doing all kinds of interesting procedures and treatments for pain, but I was not offered anything. The pain management class was a one time thing, and it was interesting though not much of a solution for me. I was also referred to a pain psychologist, which was really far booked out, and then they cancelled it before I ever got to go because the "provider wasn't available." So It was a disappointing experience overall and a serious waste of my time. Maybe people with other pain conditions than I have are offered better options.
