The best team of pain management doctors I've see. I suffered with pain and chronic migraines that were beyond repair I thought with out surgery. To my surprise with their pain management of recommended Cortizone shots for my torn labrum. And an epidural shot for my slip discs in my neck. Met with the doctor and explained my concerns, was referred to get an X-ray from an outside provider. Doctor seemed nice and genuine; X-ray occurred the same day and results were available online and instantly. A follow-up appointment was scheduled for 1 month out for a cortisone shot. Fast forward to today; no follow-up call received about the X-Ray in a month's time frame. 1-1/2hr before the appointment scheduled(1month ago), I receive a cancellation of the appointment today, requesting an MRI that was ordered by the doctor. Unsure why this didn't occur within days of the X-ray a or so month ago? Cannot say this place values people's time, or truly cares about patients pain levels or experiences. Tried to contact patient coordinators after receiving the call, no answer. Decided to arrive for my appointment and asked in-person for details. Only apologies, but no explanation from the actual doctor. Will continue to visit larger medical providers and doctors at Sutter Health or Stanford for health care concerns,truly disappointed. read more

If I could give zero Stars I would. The most runaround I have ever received from a specialist, 4 months of appointments, telehealth visits where I'm waiting a half an hour (into the appt) to receive the link to join the visit. No communication between his staff and Dr.Gwalani. I call and leave messages with his admin staff that clearly go directly into his spam folder. I am appalled that this man calls himself a pain specialist, two MRIs three x-rays later thousands of dollars in scans, 4 months of appointment and he can do nothing for me. He can do nothing for you, don't waste your time as I did. He's all smiles. All happy. All positive vibes and he tells you there's nothing he can do for you, out of his scope of practice to treat anything systemic, so if you have pain in multiple areas, don't bother. I was diagnosed with CRPS after a severe motorcycle accident 4 years ago. I went to Dr. Gwalani with sever nerve pain in my foot/extreme sensitivity and he suggested a sympathetic nerve block. We went through the process twice for it to really kick in, but it is working! I'm still dealing with natural pain, but my nerve pain for the most part has subsided! Provider is quick and thorough, however the scheduling is terrible. The first situation, I had a video visit appointment where the provider was a no show. I called and left a message to make it clear that I was not a no show and wanted to be sure I was not charged for that visit. I was then notified a couple days later that the provider had technical difficulties and I already had already been rescheduled for another date/time that I had not agreed to. A courtesy phone call would have been nice. This happened a second time. I got a voicemail on 3/4 that the provider would like to schedule a follow up video visit on 3/19. I did not call back to schedule or confirm any appointment. On 3/19 at 9am I get 3 back to back phone calls and 2 voicemails stating they were calling to remind me of my appt at 9:30a. I was in a meeting and not able to answer, but as soon as I was able, immediately called them to let them know I DID NOT schedule that appointment nor did I agree to that date and time. The gentleman cut me off saying they left me a voicemail on 3/4 but that it was fine and they can cancel the appointment. Again, I let him know I got the voicemail, but I DID NOT AGREE TO THAT APPOINTMENT and wanted to be sure that I would not be charged a copay for the cancelled appointment that I did not schedule or agree to. Multiple phone calls and voicemails back to back and blind scheduling are not good practices. I don't plan on being back unfortunately. read more

I have been seeing Dr.Gwalaney for a couple of years because I have a herniated disc in my L5 that droops down into both sides of my S1. I will admit that in the beginning there were issues with my insurance and I had to switch from Blue Cross to Alameda Alliance to keep this doctor and I have had issues with being billed for MRIs that were already approved but that has nothing to do with this office. I also had issues with my in office appointments being changed to video calls when I really needed the doctor to see my knee that has fluid under the kneecap. You can't see that on a video call, and you certainly can not get the fluid removed over a video chat, however, the office has gotten much better, over the years, at returning calls and making follow up appointments, which was another issue in the beginning. Now about me, I have extreme pain in my lower back and Sciatica in both legs, as well as arthritis in all my bones. Dr.Gwalaney mentioned that he's never seen anything like it. I have the arthritis of an 80 year old and I'm just 49,(Thanks genetics). Additionally, I also have a pinched nerve in my shoulder blades. Oh ya, I almost forgot the soft tissue sarcoma in my left thigh that's so big that it's pressing on my sciatic nerve all the time. (the next thing on the list). I have been receiving trigger point injections in my upper back to relieve the pain in my shoulder blades and epidural injections in my lower back. However, those injections stopped working recently and so we had to look into other options to alleviate my pain as I refuse to take narcotics being a recovering addict from pain meds and other types of drugs and alcohol for over 15 years. Unfortunately, my condition is inoperable as doing any kind of surgery could actually worsen my injury. Dr. Gwalaney decided that I was a good candidate for the spinal stimulation device. I went through the trial, which was successful for my Sciatica, but really did nothing for my bone pain. He told me that he would be adding a program that would focus on bone pain, too,but the technician told me that the device doesn't work for bones, just nerves. I am happy with the device, even though it doesn't alleviate my bone pain at the same time. I guess I'll be taking Tylenol for the rest of my life. Oh well. For medical Knowledge and execution (5) stars. Overall experience (4) As for the Medtronics SCS permanent implant that Dr. Gwalani has placed in me, I am very happy. I have finally been able to experience what it is to be almost pain-free for most of my activities. I had endured excruciating pain for over 20 years, and this implant has been a life changer for me so far. I've only had it for less than a month, but I see the benefits; however, to get to this point, I had to go thru hell mainly due to the stress of dealing with the administrative end of the office. Dr. Gwalani knows his job and his medical skills are spot in executing the medical aspect of it. It would have been helpful to have a video illustrating, or more literature to detail on what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Having to make a last minute choice as to what type of battery a patient prefers to have implanted when already being hooked up to an IV, and prior to being taken into the operating room is not ideal, in my opinion. Administratively, I feel there is much room for improvement that would lead Dr. Gwalani's practice to further success. The 1 to 2 hours hold times on the phone to book an appointment or getting a simple question answered or getting a call back and follow through from the office is a complete ordeal. Leaving a voice mail message is not the best of options as it goes to no-man's-land. Office staff Renee was my point of contact, and she helped ease my frustration at times, though she was limited to what she could respond. Dr. Gwalani is indeed a good doctor, and although he talks fast, and makes it look like he is rushing you, he does take in consideration your concerns. I never saw him take medical notes, so I can only assume he transcribes these immediately after he leaves the room or has extra-ordinary memory. The truth is, regardless of all my issues with the administrative end of my experience, Dr. Gwalani always made me feel that he understood my needs, and he would take good care of me, which made me feel comfortable to be under his care. read more

I had long term lower back pain that I tried to fix by doing stretches at home. Finally went to Dr J Gwalani for a proper fix. He diagnosed the problem, recommended physiotherapy. It worked wonders and the pain is down 70% after 6 weeks. Looking forward to the rest of therapy and 0 pain. He has great bedside manners, explained things clearly and prescribed the best solution. I'm extremely impressed by Dr. Gwalani's efficiency. Dr. Gwalani speaks fast, and that may give you the impression that he's trying to rush you as some have mentioned in reviews, but I didn't feel rushed at all. I write all my questions down so that I don't forget to ask him because getting an appointment with him might be tough. And he patiently answers all of them. Also, it's a bit tough to get a hold of his staff, but that might be because they're at different locations on different days, but whenever I've left a voicemail, they respond back in a day or two. I've had a couple of sessions with Dr. Gwalani for Sciatica caused by a herniated disc. Dr. Gwalani knew exactly what was wrong, and had already reviewed my MRI even before he walked into the room for my first session. I was very impressed with that. He suggested a couple of solutions, and I'm trying the less invasive one first. I think he's a great doctor who'll work with you to find a solution that is best for you. I highly recommend Dr. Gwalani. I have been suffering from neck problems for around 30 years in the last 10 years the pain has been much worse. I started out with another Hospital (supposed one of the best). They did a procedure on my nerves in my neck and admitted they damaged them and, there was nothing they could do. I've had lower back and leg pain for some time. An MRI finally led to a diagnosis of spinal stenosis followed by a trail of sketchy medical practitioners, frustratingly useless physical therapy and continued pain. Until I found this place. Dr. Gwalani was pretty through in his initial examination and spent a good amount of time understanding both my pain and mobility issues. He offered a multiple step plan that he thought would offer substantial immediate, temporary relief with concrete steps to a long term solution. I have one last step to take to complete Gwalani's plan. If I split my issues into pain and mobility I'd say even now I've recovered 70% of my mobility and more in pain reduction. It's given me back a big chunk of my life. I'm walking 8-10miles a day and waiting to start lifting again. I certainly have every reason to expect the next step will be as successful. Dr Gwalani's effective treatments significantly reduced my mom's chronic knee pain. She was on orthopedic treatment (steriod injections) for over a year before but Dr Gwalani's frequency heat treatment choice is far better. This review is strictly for the clinical staff and not Dr Gwalani. While the doctor himself is really good, interacting with his staff is a whole another matter. a) Scheduling an appointment is a nightmare. Last time, I scheduled an in-person appointment only to find out a day before that it had miraculously been changed to a tele-health appointment. Pray tell me how much can the doctor really help online with an active back issue. Not just that, the time had also been moved without any prior intimation. This has happened not once but twice. b) Despite submitting my new insurance details, they haven't bothered to update the insurance on record even though it has been 6+ months. I keep receiving rejected claims from my old insurance. I have shared my new insurance details multiple times but to no avail. There is zero attention to detail. I hate having to miss out on Dr Gwalani's expertise and help to fix a chronic back issue but these hoops that I have had to jump thru with his staff, have forced me to seek medical help elsewhere. read more

Run run run from this place . This place is one of the most horrendous places I have ever been to. I have had 16 surgeries big and small, and I know my way around a medical office. I'm a cancer survivor, you name it, I probably had to deal with it. I requested a referral from my doctor. I have Alameda Alliance, and my doctor has never sent me to a referring physician without it being covered. I'm just at my wit's end with pain, and I thought this would be a start instead of surgery . I'm so excited to go there , like a child going to Disneyland . The first time, I made an appointment with this disgusting office. I called that morning to double-check to make sure they had my referral, and we were ready to go. I got a confirmation from Renee . I went to the office, and they sat me down to do pages of new patient info. Paperwork They brought me in and put me on the scale and put me in a Deluxe Suite room. I wish they cared for their patients as much as they do for their Aesthetics. A girl came in and said the doctor couldn't see you because we didn't get your referral. I said, "Sorry, I called today and double-check I'm not leaving until the doctor comes in and explains to me." They set a staff member named Mohammed like he's going to take care of anything? The doctor didn't even have the decency to come in and see me. I should have gone with my instinct, but I tried for a second time. I called Mohammed and asked him if you would take my insurance, and he said yes. I started the ball rolling again. My MRIs say I have future back surgery; it's not what I was looking forward to. I wanted a nip tuck and suck. Anyhow, I emailed my primary care, a time-waster. They called me today and said, "Hey, we got your referral, and we set up an appointment." Dr. Galwani said, "Oh no, we don't take that kind of insurance." This man has several offices around the bay, and I believe he's just in it for the money. He stretches his time, and I don't believe he really cares. I'm going to bet ten bucks. he drives a Tesla and really got into this business for the wrong reason. You should see how upscale the office is; you would think you were at a spa. All you get is I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Go to people who care about you who really truly care; this is not that office. This office is almost impossible to reach. I had two sets of epidural steriod injections with no follow up calls. He was setting up a time for a temporary spinal cord stimulator. I called his office 3 times & got no response. Twice no one answered & another time I left a message which was never returned. My regular doctor & I decided this is not a practice for me. Was told I would receive a phone call to schedule imaging appointment and never received even a follow up after 6 days while being in immense pain.. Called the office and the receptionist didn't even know if the doctor had submitted paperwork for mri and X-ray or not. There is no approval needed from my insurance. No call back or confirmation call of next appointment. No pain medication or even discharge papers with instructions on next steps. Wasn't asked if needed anything else such as a doctors note for work. Just felt pushed away. My mum has been suffering from severe lower back pain due to disc herniation and has consulted various doctors in India but have not been able to manage pain. One of my friend recommended to take second opinion from Dr Gwalani. We immediately contacted him and he was so prompt in getting back to us.
