Nawbin was one of the first local businesses I came to love when I started visiting Traverse City regularly sixteen years ago, and is still my favorite since I moved here in 2016. I love Nawbin's exhaustive selection of beads of all kinds, from all over the world. I'm an artist who frequently uses beads in my work, and Nawbin always has something to inspire me. If you're into beads, this is the place to shop! Although they sell more than just beads and beading supplies. Great selection with a wide variety to chose from. It's been years since I've been here, as I used to live local to it, and was visiting the area so popped back in to help find some new beads for a fundraising project I'm working on. Beads! So many of them. If you are into making your own jewelry, this is your spot. Hands down. They've got a HUGE selection. We were actually here because my friend with insurance benefits (I kid, I kid...my fiance) has become enamored with a particular kind of stone native to the region: The Petoskey Stone. Educate yourself? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petoskey_stone Now, I am also quite fond of these fossil stones that I combed beaches for during much of my childhood. However, he's taken it to an entirely new level and I believe him and my nephew may have enough at this point to build a fireplace. It's never enough... So we head to Nawbin to check out their selection, which is pretty good! They have many polished stones, raw stones, petoskey stone jewelry (which he tried to buy me, no thanks), wine stoppers, etc. HE also was able to chat with one of the employees on how best to polish them (they are delicate and cannot be put in tumblers), which was cool. i picked up a few loose beads/stones for my mom (she is a jewelry maker!) and was impressed with the selection. Some really nice pieces for very cheap, and absolutely anything you might need to build beautiful jewelry for yourself or others. If i had a kid daughter, I'd bring her here. It's a cool place! Ok, or my soon-to-be-husband-who-maybe-should've-been-born-here-and-not-me. Luckily he can transplant during the summers! *The only thing that sort of miffed me is that I got to the counter with all my beads and the woman really gruffly stated "WE USE THE BAG METHOD HERE!" Ok, I can see that, but perhaps since I was one of three people in the store (and have never been here before) you could've mentioned that to me as you saw me walking around with beads in my hands? Or, like have a sign up that explains your method. Because making me go look up prices for everything, put them in bags and return to the counter is downright annoying and makes the staff seem lazy. I'm happy to do the bag method if I know about it! I'm not trying to make anyone's life harder. I am trying to spend money, so some customer service would be delightful. They also offer classes, so check their schedule/website. You can't miss it, it's a huge TEAL converted house just south of downtown TC on Front Street, if you hit the Blue Goat and the split to the peninsula you've gone too far. My friend's daughter makes jewelry and got her into it as well. This shop has an excellent variety of chains and natural materials for necklaces et al. Their variety of stones, beads, pendants is also impressive. Already made items are available as well, but not a ton. Parking, more entry and exit, can be on the adventurous side. Wonderful shop staffed by wonderful people. I have been making, showing and selling handcrafted beaded jewelry for 17 years, so i have visited Many bead boutiques throughout Michigan. This one has stood out as a favorite for me such that i happily make the 4 hour drive up from downstate to see what new treasures the proprietors have dug up to delight their patrons and am never disappointed! My most recent pilgrimage happened to coincide with an unseasonable and unreasonably awful snow storm, and while the owners were kind enough to their employees to forgo business and close up shop for the day in the name of safety, they were also generous enough to personally open up their doors for me towards the end of the day once road conditions allowed it, after i reached out via their Facebook page to express my dismay at not being able to get in for a peek after coming so far. A broad range of quality materials to satisfy many styles (or just many moods if your like me). Competitive prices with the option to buy individual beads or a whole strand, and an unbeatable hospitality that goes well beyond basic customer service. Top notch!
