Now for my problem: Cost. I have had tree work like this done before for our property in New Jersey and was shocked with the final bill for this provider's services. I paid the bill but emailed the owner about a few concerns. Michael (the owner) agreed to meet me and discuss the bill. At first I thought the meeting would go well, but I was insulted by how he tried to show me his fuel credit card bills, a recent HVAC service that he had performed (trip charge, diagnostic charge etc.), insurance costs, etc... GOT IT, BUSINESS is expensive. 7 men at $65 per hour = $7.58 per minute. First, there was about an hour and 15 minute period where 4 of the men (two tree climbers and helpers) were minimally working, mostly standing around waiting on the bucket truck to be done so they could do the final cleanup/chipping. When I queried about why I was paying $65 an hour each for 4 men standing around, I was not given a satisfactory answer. He gave me a wishy-washy excuse that this was built into the price and he should be charging more. If I would have comprehended better that in fact I was being charged for them to be standing around, I would have had them trim the hedges or work on more trees in the back. Second, the rounding of the times was in their favor. My phone clock said 1103 when they were done, the main person on the job-site said he called and said they were done at 1110, my final bill said 1115. I know this might be trivial about minutes... but we are talking about $7.58 a minute (10 minutes = $75.80). He said that rounding like this was normal. Would I recommend his services to a friend? No, but if they insisted, it would be with caution due to cost. Will I use their services in the future? No... thought that I might, but after being belittled by the owner after discussing our bill, I would not. Bottom Line: I believe that when I do not get a proper estimate or even "rough" estimate I should take some blame as well, chalk it up to "stupid tax". I know that he will stand by his statement that you can't give a solid estimate for this type of job, but I should have asked "how many men?" and "roughly how long should this job take?" Certainly with his 20 years of experience and being a 'Certified Arborist', he should have been able to answer those questions. Unfortunately, with a busy schedule and newborn, I did not do my due-diligence and paid for it.

I originally contacted New Edition Concrete & Tree Removal (hereafter written as "NECTR") to…read morerequest a quote for a concrete pad. Unfortunately, my experience was an absolute nightmare. Over the phone, the owner gave me a great quote. But after looking at the land in person, he raised his price slightly. This was no problem, since the original price was very low, and made before he'd seen the land. We signed a contract, and that's basically where our problems began. Before the ink was even dry, he texted me to say he needed to raise the price by almost $2,000. I was hesitant, but the owner told me he "really wanted to show me what he could do." We wanted the job done right, so we agreed. The following two days members of the NECTR team came by to work, and after those two days, they'd dug two holes and made a wooden frame. That, to this day, is 100% of the work NECTR has performed for me. The excuses began almost immediately: -The guy who was supposed to be there is sick. -We don't work if it's hot out. -We don't work if it's wet out. -I can't get a hold of anyone. After about ten days of this, the owner texted us to say he needed the rest of the money we agreed on. We reminded him the contract stated any money after the deposit was only due once NECTR was ready to pour concrete. The owner confirmed he was ready to pour and finish the job, he just needed the rest of the money to buy concrete. We paid him what he was owed, and since then it's been nothing but delays and refusal to come out. -We have to drive a long distance. -Concrete is more expensive than I thought. -I don't have anyone who can get out there . -I can't find concrete. This continued for the better part of a month, until we finally realized we could not count on NECTR to perform the work they'd been paid to do. We came to an agreement with the owner to terminate the contract in exchange for a 50% refund. However, after making 3 very small payments, NECTR has refused to continue payments or communicate with us further. Finally, we knew this was out of our hands and took NECTR to small claims court. Despite giving us a fake address, the sheriff was able to serve him. He failed to appear at our hearing and the judge ruled in my favor. However, since then NECTR has continued to refuse to pay us our agreed refund or respond to contact attempts. We hired someone else and had a perfect concrete pad in less than two days. I have proof of everything in this review in the form of the contract, payment transactions, text messages and legal documents showing a ruling in my favor. Even now he is in open defiance of a court order. Placing my trust and my money in the hands of NECTR is the biggest mistake I've ever made as a homeowner.
