After having the same Macintosh repair guy/friend for 20 years, I was at a complete loss of what to do when suddenly my Mac air stopped charging. I had heard about Mac Shack, and of course had seen it 1 million times but I'd never needed to go there. Important: guy smokes in his shop. To each their own, but Apple swabs devices for cigarette smoke before accepting a repair, and won't take a device that's been smoked around--with or without a warrantee. i.e. If you take a computer here you run a risk of voiding a warrantee and/or Apple never working on your device again. It's possible all devices are sealed and there's no exposure, but how can you know? Risk at your own discretion. The proprietor is knowledgeable but problematically uncommunicative. We left the laptop for a simple procedure, which was supposed to be done by the next day. The next day came 'round and, when night had fallen and we hadn't heard anything, we called and texted to no avail. Finally we get a message saying there's a complication, but that the repair will be done tomorrow. That's not inherently an issue, but we had clients waiting on work. If we're not kept informed of changing timelines, we can't inform the clients. If there was an issue and a repair is going to take longer than expected, it's simply good business to let the customer know immediately, especially when the object in question is where 100% of customer's job happens. So yet another day comes and goes. No update. We texted. The proprietor responds with what amounts to "Who is this again?" No other message, i.e. no update on the status. We still can't tell our clients when we can do the work. Two days with no updates, no communication, nothing from the MacShack. We can't chase service providers. And then a third day comes. We call and get no answer. We still can't tell clients when we can do the work. Also, without updates, we have no idea what to expect as far as labor dollars go. And because we can't just leave a crucial work device in a mystery box for unknown duration with no info about the repair or labor, we conclude we ought to just pick up the device, cut our losses, and figure something else out. But, lo! On pickup the device mysteriously worked. For what it's worth, the labor and rate according to the invoice was fair enough. 2/5. Complications happen but you can't leave things open-ended for days without letting customer know what's up. We very nearly lost clients because of this. read more

In checking in two computers, It was the intention to combine some components and replace a video card on the tower. After picking up the laptop, I asked multiple times that Michael find me a card that was suitable to go into the tower. He sent me info to look for it myself, which I was totally confused over and didn't know what to be looking for with confidence. There was a huge lapse of time and now it is gotten rid of! Never once was I asked to pick it back up! I feel taken advantage of. It was a really cool tower that was definity only a video card away from working...... Also, very incorrect info about my macbook pro problem and what needed to happen. Aside from getting my data sorted out and transferred all other information was a total waste of time and money to have followed instruction on. I had to go to someone else afterwards for additional help. Pretty shitty and unacceptable. read more

Mike saved my 8yr old Mac Book Pro from becoming obsolete. It has been few years since my computer has been running slooooow. Last month the mouse pad just took a life of its own. I called Mike to see if there anything he could do to save it. We he did. And he also cleaned my Mac from some programs that were slowing it down. My computer now runs like new. We had an external hard drive that got damaged, and took it to Mike to see if there was anyway he could repair it or get it to mount. He took some time and checked it out, and found out quickly that it was too damaged to repair. I asked if he had any data recovery companies he could recommend, and he immediately had one to suggest. At the end, I asked him how much it would be for his time, and he didn't charge me anything! :) What? Who does that now? I so appreciate his time and help, and went with the data recovery company he recommended and was able to get all our data back. If we ever have any computer issues in the future, I won't hesitate to go see Mike. read more

Mike did a super job on my wife's computer, the laptop would not boot up and no "finder" was available to see any files. This is the first time Mike had ever seen this kind of issue. Mike was able to fix this issue and called me later in the afternoon on the same day I dropped it off. I was not expecting to see the lap top for a couple of days. I highly recommend nCity Mac shack and Mike! I called him up and let him know that I needed some help with some upgrades and migration from an old computer to a new one. He gave me a next day appointment - I showed up and he literally spent all day checking in on my computers to make sure they were downloading and upgrading. He customized the migration so I didn't get unecessary data using up memory on my new computer. It's such a relief to know I've got somewhere to go locally instead of having to head down the hill to the Mac store in Roseville or over to Reno... Before I even brought my laptop into the shop, Mike did some troubleshooting with me over the phone. He was very informed, helpful, and even brought some humor to my somewhat desperate situation!
