This is one of my mum's favorite places to visit and dine out. Hidden a short distance from i80 behind the gas stations. You're in a small town and the atmosphere is just that with a calm, laid back, cheerful vibe. They serve mostly guests of the Comfort Suites or golfers, that's literally the reason it was built. I wouldn't say service is slow, just don't be in a rush when you come here. I personally love this place because they care enough to feed the starving kittens in the winter. There are strays that come around when it's cold and they'll make a meat meal to set outside for them. Watching the kittens eat outside while I did inside is one of my fondest memories about this place. OK, on to the food! The cheese curds aren't quite what you'd expect because it's not white cheese but they're still delicious and they give you quite a few. Service is great, really friendly. If you have a special request like an extra meal to go they'll definitely wait to make it until you're almost done in order to keep it fresh for you. If you're not happy with something, say so, they'll try to fix it. My mum always orders the Hot Beef with Mashed Potatoes and the portion is generous. The Mashed Potatoes are indeed instant but it's not like they try to hide it if you ask. I usually have the Philly Steak Sandwich, it's filled with grilled peppers, it's delicious and I'd recommend it. This time I had the Baked Potato for my side and you can do your own sour cream with butter or ask for a loaded baked potato. Comfort food, in a comfy place, at a reasonable price. Gothenburg, Ne. Factoring in everything, I probably would not give this place 5 stars. However the quality of the meat was surprising and the taste was quite amazing. We stumbled upon this locals gathering spot because of a Tesla charging station located a short walk away. It looks large and fairly modern from the outside, but upon entry I really had my doubts. It looked like a typical midwestern supper club with the bar and the dining area. The dining area was brightly lit with fluorescent lights, and there was the ubiquitous salad bar, probably the same make and model that's in thousands of supper clubs. The bar was nicely lit, much more intimate and relaxing. The glaring dining room was decorated with an abundance of Knick knacks and an assortment of vintage items on a top shelf winding its way around the room. One of the locals, Greg, a conductor on the local railway, introduced himself and entertained us for awhile at the salad bar. The salad bar was typical and adequate. A sign was posted one trip only. The plates were not plates but saucers. Obviously there must have been a problem with folks getting glutinous with the salads. My thought is, at this point, ditch the salad bar and just serve up the salad size you want to give your customers. It took awhile to get our steak and ribs. The waitress kept us informed where we were in the queue as the cook doesn't cook too many steaks at once. I ordered the New York strip which they called the grandma or something like that. It was cooked perfectly. It was spiced perfectly. The taste was what a good steak should taste like. The thickness was about 3/4 of an inch, it could have been thicker.at least it wasn't the half inch slab you get at other places. The ribs are also amazing. The marinate they use colors the meat slightly red but there was no overwhelming taste of the sauce. The ribs were meaty and fall off the bone tender. read more

During my last drive I was kind of in the middle of nowhere and not much was open until we saw this gem. This place was exactly what we had in mind when we wanted a steak dinner. What a huge disappointment!!! Many of the reviews raved about this place. Either it was a totally off night when we went, or those rave reviews were the ones that were off. The steak I ordered was way overcooked to the cardboard level of color and was a really odd shape / cut of meat. The green beans tasted like they came out of the can and when ordering, I inquired about the mashed potatoes and she let me know they made it from potato flakes. The beef sandwich was what tasted like processed, not full-up real meat. We both left pretty hungry and not very happy. The service was barely there even though there were only a few tables of customers. But when she was there, she was really sweet. After we showed her the cardboard steak, she also was appalled and kindly removed it from our table as well as from our ticket. She instead really wanted me to order something else, but with two strikes already, I wasn't willing to go for another and find ourselves with 3 stikes/"out". :( We were going to give it another try, just to see if we just missed a jewel, but we couldn't convince ourselves to do it. Great place right off the interstate on the northwest side. Across the street from choice suites. Had the Grandpa ribeye with scalloped potatoes. It was grilled to perfection & tasted great like Nebraska beef should be done. Scalloped potatoes nice & creamy. Something you don't see on menus very often. Good selection of the salad bar also. Had bull fries for an appetizer. Cooked perfectly, not overdone like some places do. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars was the salad plates were very small plates for a salad bar, so I had to use 2 plates. Looking forward to returning on a Fri or Sat for the prime rib which they do on a Traeger smoker. They also serve quite a few Nebraska beers from different breweries. read more

Whenever we hit a new town, we usually will ask locals where to go for food (not for any areas of eternal damnation or anything of that nature). This one was closest to our hotel and also not a chain and highly recommended by the counter staff, so we spun over there. Outside is a rusted tractor and farm implement graveyard, the kind of rustic Americana kitsch you see splattered all over nearly every single small town you can happen across in America. All to the good there, as me and my kid love that stuff. Inside was a sort of gift shop and interior version of more of the same (and a nearly full pie spinner, which gave me great hope) and the restaurant proper was filled with that kind of bric-a-brac. Looking out the window yielded a similar view. All good so far. Service came, was friendly, but achingly slow, nearly unacceptably so. I get it, life in rural areas, is laid back and slower and so on, but if you're a more-or-less roadside restaurant along a major interstate highway, you have to leave some of that shit at the curb as many of your patrons will be travelers, weary from the road, who do not want to be fucked around with homespun nonsense about slowing down. We want to eat and get back to our rooms to relax with the tv and maybe a sixie and try to decompress before the return of the road on the morrow. I digress. The appetizers here were quite good. The cheese curds need to be bigger to compete with the breading, but the corn bite things were excellent. The green beans took on the flavor of something else I couldn't quite identify and that colored things negatively, but all in all...pretty solid. The mozzarella sticks were similarly also ok. Both wife and I went with the French dip sandwich, figuring with the preponderance of beef on the menu, it would be a safe choice to order something with that protein. Mine came out with a minimal amount of beef in comparison to the bread and a ton of fat on the meat. So, I had the distinct pleasure of trimming my own cuts of beef before re-assembling the sandwich, which was barely worth the effort. I should probably have gone with a steak, in hindsight. The fries, however, were the battered variety and also pretty good. As to the pie, they had the chocolate mint silk and I had the peach. The peaches were nearly entirely solidly raw (and also not ripe) and the crust a major misstep, but in conjunction with the ice cream, the sauce was quite good. Ice cream was also kind of excellent...so...a mixed bag. I would probably eat here again, as I figure I definitely ordered wrong, but this was far from what I would say was a stunning visit. read more

On our way from California to South Carolina, our transmission died and we spent several days in Gothenburg Ne. We stayed several days at the Howard Johnson and found the Nebraska Bar and Grill which was located near the motel. Kim who took our order was so nice as were all the people dining at the time. The first night my husband had the French Dipper which was excellently prepared with the right amount of seasoning and was very tender. I had Diana's Favorite which was a very tasty oven roasted pastrami, grilled sauerkraut and thinly sliced swiss cheese on marble rye bread. On the second night, we had the Here a Chick There a Chick, the chicken tenders were very tender and generous serving. The Chicken Fried Chicken was a great portion, not too big but just the right amount. The salad bar may not be large but it is comprised of nearly everything we would normally put in a salad. the cucumbers are worth a mention as they had a hint of vinegar which added a distinct and light flavor. If you are ever driving down Interstate 80 through Nebraska, be sure to stop and grab a bite to eat at the Nebraska Bar and Grill where the food is good, the atmosphere is fun, the wait staff are great and you will meet some of the nicest people in the country. Short and sweet: Great quality food, fast and friendly service, and good prices for what you get. Detailed: While passing through my wife and I ordered Grandma's Fried Chicken and a steak salad. The fried chicken was the best bone-in fried chicken that I've ever had (Let it be known that I have had plenty of fried chicken across the United States ranging from coast to coast including different styles of fried chicken). The breading was light but just enough to make each bite crispy, and the chicken is made to order which helps the chicken fry since it isn't frozen. The meat is juicy and full of flavor. With the breading it is lightly spiced with what seems to be a simple salt and pepper mix, but that is what keeps the chicken from getting tainted with too many flavors. The salad was fresh, crisp, and vibrant. The steak that topped the salad was prepared medium rare and the chef did a great job grilling. The owner of the restaurant also owns a cattle ranch just west of the location, so the meat truly is, "Farm to Table". I usually get the salad bar which has a nice assortment. If I don't feel like eating in the bar I'll order take out. A nice touch is being able to get the salad bar to go. 5 stars for being one of the few options in this town and walkable from the Comfort Suites. read more

What a great find. We were staying at the Comfort Suites across the parking lot (owned by same folks) and needed some grub. I'm glad we decided to try it out. The food was pretty good, I had the Mother-in-law steak with sweet potato fries (which have this magical marshmallow cream sauce). My husband ordered the chicken fingers with homemade chips and the kid ordered the grilled shrimp. The husband ended up eating the grilled shrimp (he says they were good) and the kid ate the chicken. The real treat were the servers and owners, and the back deck. They let our dog out back and my kid got to throw rocks in the flooded pond. It was beautiful and a much needed respite. Walked over from the hotel for supper. Place looked crowded but turns out most were in the bar side... The restaurant side nicely divided and really family friendly. Nice smattering of folk and more came as we were ahead of the dinner crowd. Salad bar fresh and cold...Not a lot of choices but more than enough variety for most I think. We got the Spinach Artichoke Rangoon as an appetizer. My wife LOVED them with the ranch sauce. I thought they were bland but presentation was nice. Guess it's personal preference here.
