Cunningham's on the Lake We're visiting family friends who love this place, so we were excited to try it. Visually, it's a great spot--beautiful inside and out, an amazing patio, lots of TVs, and an impressive bar with 48 beers on tap plus beer flights. Unfortunately, during our visit, both the food and service fell short. We started with the pork belly bites. They were okay, but the texture wasn't what we're used to--we typically prefer them cooked a bit more. We also ordered the crab cakes, which came as three large pieces on a bed of lettuce (basically a big house salad). After a few bites, we realized they were ice cold. We let the bartender know and they were sent back, but they came out ice cold again. To their credit, they removed the item from our bill, which we appreciated. We then ordered a burger. The patty was very thick and had potential, but the fries were ice cold. Service slowed at this point--it took a long time to get ketchup or any follow-up. We noticed staff eating in a booth behind us while two employees behind the bar appeared busy, which was disappointing. The beer selection is excellent, but my Dirty Shirley tasted off. I switched to a Tito's and Sprite, but it still didn't taste right--likely flat soda that hadn't been changed. Overall, the patio and beer selection are highlights, but the execution on food and service missed the mark on this visit. Based on this experience, I'd give it 2 stars. My husband and I sat at the bar for beer and meals. We were given a printed menu of beer on tap, but several on the menu were not available, so by the time I struck out on three I tried to order, we were instructed to scan the QR code on menu for what is truly available. The barmaid who started to take care of us, and was going to bring me a sample of a beer, weirdly abandoned us for other customers and another bartender ended up taking care of us. A lot of staff hanging out at one side of the bar area and not enough attention paid to serving customers. Another miss mark on service is the server who brought our food to us. She roughly set the plates down and in the process the au jus from my husband's plate spilled onto his clothing. She did a very quick drop and run. Came here for a late lunch while visiting Kearney. Location was gorgeous and interior had such a good feel to it. Service was friendly! I got the steak quesadilla which was okay. Everything was fantastic! We slid right in towards the back with a great view of the lake while still sitting inside! We tried the cheese curds, steak bites, and pork belly, all were great, my favorite was the pork belly! I had the blue cheese burger, I loved that the blue cheese was real crumbles and not the sauce, but the burger itself wasn't great, kinda burnt, dry, and not seasoned. They do take reservations, which I always recommend but the restaurant is HUGE! There was so many servers and they were all helping each other out, we never went without! A late night snack for two before turning in at our hotel was what we came in for on a Monday night - an hour before closing. We shared a Dijon Chicken sandwich plate which came with battered/seasoned french fries. I also ordered a House Caesar side salad. The Dijon chicken was a little dry, no juiciness left but I liked the charring on it. It could have used a little heavier application of the dijon sauce or the addition of some mayonnaise on the bun. The Caesar salad had the usual ingredients except they added white onion slivers. Didn't think that worked well with the rest of the salad ingredients. The Root Beer and the IPA I ordered (Kinkaider Death from Above) were fine and we drank our glasses dry. Highly recommend the jalapeño bacon chicken which is chunks of chicken wrapped in fresh jalapeño and bacon and grilled. So flavorful and not too spicy. The filet skewer is also delicious, but they serve it medium rare which was too rare for my taste but they were very tender. They also have good locally brewed beers. Special shout out for the Nectar Fairy from La Vista Brewing- a tasty hazy IPA. If the weather is nice, they have a great patio overlooking the lake and if it's chilly they have fire tables! We always eat at Cunningham's when traveling through Kearney. The food is always top-notch, the outdoor patio is beautiful (and pet friendly) and the service is always above and beyond. I loved the firecracker salmon with mango sauce, and my husband says the chicken quesadilla is the best he's ever had. The prices are reasonable given the quality of the food. When we first arrived they weren't offering patio seating, but they were quick to accommodate us. Our waiter, Mikkel, was friendly and attentive to every need. He even brought water for our dogs. Food came out fast and was all cooked well, nothing missing on the order even though they were very busy. We come here religiously twice a year as part of our road trip. It's always been amazing. I'm not sure if they changed ownership, or were just having a bad week, but both times we came this summer it was embarrassingly bad. I chalk this up to the fact that they only have teenagers working there- not a single adult- the kids seem clueless. Not sure if there's a boss or manager that's over the age of 20 there because they seem very confused. The first time we came this year, we had a reservation and when the "hostess" brought us to the table, there was a couple already sitting there. The hostess told us this was our table and just left.... We stared at the other couple -and they stared at us- for a few minutes and then walked back to the hostess stand to let her know we didn't have a table and asked what happened. Was really bizarre to just have a hostess leave you standing in the middle of a restaurant. The second time we came this year was absolutely awful. We both ordered a glass of sparking wine and we were told they had "run out". We asked to order a glass of wine and we were told by our server they didn't do wines by the glass??? I asked for clarification and she said she didn't know what wines they had and asked me to select one for her on her order tablet- but there was no price nor what type of wine it was. I told her that I couldn't order when I didn't know what wines they were and how much they cost. She then told me it was cheaper if I ordered a bottle; which I told her I didn't want to do- I literally just wanted a glass of wine- didn't even have to be good wine. When they brought our water it actually wasn't water- it tasted like cleaning solution- either sanitizer or bleach- it burned my mouth. When we notified her something was wrong with the water, our server just looked at us blankly and didn't offer to bring anything else. We finally decided to just leave after sitting there for 15 minutes and our server notified us that she talked to her manager and they were going to comp us (the only thing we got around to ordering was a kids meal). I've worked retail my whole life- a proper response would have been for the manager to come to the table, ask what was going on and offer a solution- which would have been just another glass of water that was drinkable/not bleach and a list of wines they offered by the glass. We're bummed because we used to love coming here and based on our experience this week, we will not be coming back. read more

The staff was so courteous and friendly. And the food was filling and flavorful. The PORK BELLY BITES are the most savory, tangy, and sweet combo I've ever tasted. They're a must. I ordered the nachos (not GF friendly btw) and my partner order the Wings. Second time around we ordered the salmon tacos and shrimp tacos.
