On the exterior, the town of Monowi, Nebraska, is an unremarkable wide spot in the road along Route 12 just south of the state's border with South Dakota. Only one, single resident remains. Upon my arrival, I met the famous mayor Elsie Eiler on the eve of her 90th birthday. She still makes her way down from her trailer to the restaurant every day, the same establishment she and her late husband Rudy have operated for over half a century. It's incredible she has the energy to keep the place running at her age, a spry woman short in stature who does the cooking and bartending all day every day. Being the only business open in town, excluding the free 5,000-book library around the corner, it's the obvious place to gather amidst the abandoned homes, crumbling vacant post office, and dilapidated church. If you're willing to make this worthwhile drive to remote Nebraska, the biggest surprise is that the food is actually very good! The pizzas are wonderful, defying all logic as to how such a delicious pie could be found so far from civilization. The menu offers a stunning selection of foods, all of which Elsie prepares, including two styles of hamburgers, five other sandwiches, and three different cuts of steak among several other options. They have a plethora of side dishes from tater tots and fries to gizzards and cheese balls, all at very reasonable prices!

Quick service and friendly atmosphere! Elsie always has a smile for her customers. They have quite…read morethe menu for a small place but have a limited menu on Holidays.

First off: No pool/darts/shuffle board/stereo during 'dinner hours.' Makes the old people grumpy. Plus, there's a sign. My family of 6 was satisfied. My burger was a little burnt, but the fries were great. The ranch is NOT good. I'm a ranch snob. This made me sad. I think prices are a little high, but they're the ONLY place around here other than the casino. Full bar. A lot of beers on tap. Bathrooms are nice. A neat little photo op area out front. I know I'll be back some day but as earlier stated, it's like, the only place around.

Niobrara Nebraska is a tiny town, but with the rivers and rolling hills it's pretty. The restaurant didn't look promising from the street but when you drive around the back it had a cute entrance. Inside is smallish with a bar on one side of a half divider and tables on the other. The interior decor was definitely sportsman themed with taxidermy animals everywhere and an antler chandelier. But it was clean and cute. Great wooden bar and tin ceiling. There were maybe 10 people in here on a Tuesday night and several looked like regulars watching Wheel of Fortune at the bar. The service was good, one bartender who was also waiting tables but I didn't wait long for anything I ordered a sweet tea which had a weird flavor so I exchanged it for a Coke which was also weird so I didn't drink it. I ordered a bacon burger but since they only had American cheese, I got mine sans cheese. That said, the burger was good. It was big and really juicy and the thick sliced bacon was a nice addition. I ordered cheese curds instead of fries and they were also good. Definitely not a gormet place, but it was solid. And considering it's the only thing in Niobrara Nebraska, it's great compared to the competition! Edited to add that the women's restroom smelled weird, there were two stalls but one was out of order. The stall had two swinging doors with a two inch gap right down the middle. And the doors were so close to the toilet that they literally slapped me on my ass on my way in!

My husband and I were looking for a place to eat after arriving up in Yankton to go camping, and…read moredidn't want to grill up anything late. So we found this place on Yelp, and decided to give it a try. When we first pulled up we honestly thought about turning away and going somewhere else. It is a little hole in the wall place and doesn't look very convincing. However, I am glad we gave it a chance! When you walk in, you actually go down stairs and the bar is down there. It is a surprisingly huge place and everything is very spread out. They had the bar in the corner and places to sit and pool tables, and darts and stuff like that. Our waiter was quick to get our drink order, but took him awhile to come back and get our food order. The menu itself isn't very big. However they have a great burger selection. If you want to add it they have it. I could have put everything from bacon, avocado, a fried egg and many other options on my burger. I had a pretty basic cheeseburger with tater tots and I was impressed. I also was really hunger, but it hit the spot. My husband really enjoyed his burger with the fried egg on it as well. You can also order a beer boot, for a decent price here. Naturally my husband had to enjoy this huge beer boot. We ended up bringing some friends back here for drinks the next night. It is a good place to eat, the food is good and there is plenty of room for a big party. We had about 10 people our second trip in. The service needs a little bit of work, but thankfully we were there at slow times. I'd be a little nervous to go there during a husker game or really busy time. They did have several TVs everywhere to watch whatever game you wanted, and the remotes were right there if you wanted to change it. I will be coming back next summer when we are up there camping. On a side not, They also have a wings and a huge selection of wings. IT reminded me of BWW's selection. I will probably try them next time!

The second time I came in the service was better but they overcharged my card. The bill was 49 dollars and she charged my card 40 dollars after I asked her to only charge 28 and I gave her 34 dollars in cash including a 12 dollar tip. Absolutely insane and unacceptable.
