Another great little gift/souvenir shop in the area with amazing high quality products, a lot from local artists or small businesses. I've bought gifts here for others, as well as little gifts for myself because I wanted to treat myself. There's a wide selection of things: puzzles, socks, pins, jewelry, incense, candles, hand creams.... even more than I can remember. Prices range all over but you're supporting a small local business, local artists, and the quality is excellent. Service was friendly and helpful and she volunteered up some information on the items I was purchasing. Definitely a great shop and asset to the block. I was really looking forward to coming back to Needles and Pens after losing a favorite pair of earrings I had previously purchased from this store. I've been here plenty of times before and have spent my hard-earned money supporting this business. When I came in today, I placed my drink on the small stand outside since drinks aren't allowed inside, and started looking for the same style of earrings I had lost. I had only been in the store for less than two minutes when an employee approached me and said something along the lines of, "Excuse me, can you finish your call outside or put headphones on?" I was simply on the phone with my mother catching up, and I was not being loud or disruptive. What bothered me most was that the employee never greeted me or acknowledged me when I walked in, yet was quick to approach me and address my phone call almost immediately. There were also no signs indicating that customers aren't allowed to be on the phone inside the store. I understand wanting to maintain a certain atmosphere, but I don't feel the way this was handled was particularly welcoming or necessary. Unfortunately, after this experience, I no longer feel comfortable supporting this business. It's disappointing, especially as someone who has been a returning customer and has supported this store multiple times. read more

I found out the earrings I've been buying here for $30+ is less than $10 from amazon. Exact same pair and quality that I've been buying from this place for years at. I was told that they were hand made by a local artist but instead it was actually from amazon where I can get next day shipping. Explains why they break so easily, I do not recommend a place thats ups their price 3-5x and lies to their customers about where they come from 1 star is generous for the amount of disappointment i feel and amount of money i spent :( read more

After our visit to The Scarlet Sage down the block, we came into Needles and Pens. My friend and I were not expecting such a cute store! They sell lots of socks, different types and all colors. They also sell these hair clips. My friend found ones that look like little pugs. I found ones that look like little corgis, bichon, etc. If you like cats, they have a variety of cat ones too. There are plants and cute planters in the back. We brought some astrology cards (generic ones) that are just for fun. read more

I could've stayed there a lot longer, but I knew I would only be torturing myself, considering I can't afford the whole store. There are hair clips with different dogs, animals, and fruits. I'm pretty bummed. This is a rather cute little earring shop with a lot of selection. I drove over here on my day off excited to buy myself some earrings. I was informed that they have a policy that you can't try on any earrings at all. I think that's really stupid. I've never had a jewelry shop tell me I couldn't try on jewelry before. How can you confidently buy something without trying it on first? They said it was unsanitary. If that was really their concern, they could easily manage it by using a little alcohol on the posts after people try things on. Lame. I bought a handful of gifts here for Christmas last year. My partner and I were walking around and wandered into Needles & Pens. It's a cute little shop that sells a variety of different trinkets--earrings, notebooks, plants and planter pots, etc. What really caught my eye was the wall of earrings just at the front on display. It was a cute little marketing tactic and made it very attractive to stop in. Some seemed to be handmade, and of high quality. The front cashier greeted us and was very friendly while conversing with my partner about different plants! I ended up purchasing a pair of cute little earrings that claim to be surgical grade steel. They are so cute! As others have noted already, I do also remember noticing that they sold bundles of sage, palo santo, and the like, which is pretty disappointing. I don't recall the bundles specifying if they were white sage, and I did not see any signage that specifically stated its use for smudging over smoke cleansing. I would encourage the shop to look into incense, herbs, or wood that are not as damaging with its roots in Native and Indigenous rituals, or even specify if the sage/palo santo is cultivated locally and sustainably. read more

Disappointing customer service. I like this store, been shopping here and there at this shop for a few years. They have cute, affordable jewelry. But their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I purchased some 24K gold plated jewelry that have tarnished within months. When I came back to ask about it, the staff member asked if I had worn them in water or in the shower or rain. I said no, I'm pretty careful about that, but I do leave them in my bathroom. She said that's probably what did it and they usually tell people about that (no one told me). She then reached out to the manager, who said there was nothing they could do. There's always something you can do. You can contact the manufacturer. You can offer an exchange. You can offer me a discount on a replacement. To offer nothing to me means you don't care about the quality of your products or helping your clients take care of their jewelry. I hope that the owners of this store will reconsider their policy and tell customers how to care for their items. I'm super disappointed and it will be a long time before I come back, if ever. TL;DR - great gift shop! I bought coffee and a pair of earrings for my mother in law here and she loved them both! I also just enjoy walking around inside. They have the funniest cards, which I've bought plenty including one with a cat pin. They also have tons of books and plants! I love their embrace of astrology because I've bought a Virgo keychain for my best friend here. I picked up a zine, And loved it so much that I wanted it to be mine. It was called The Little Book of Farts, And it tickled my heart, Making me giggle, As I looked at each smelly squiggle. There were so many books, Next to a rack of clothes and other fashionable looks. There were also slightly overpriced candles, Which were strategically placed around the store to be held and handled. I was really excited to check out this place and see what kind of zines this place has to offer. When walking in I was immediately met with sage and Palo Santo and other culturally appropriative items. Selling indigenous ceremonial items is cultural violence. Many of these items are endangered and over harvested. I don't recommend going into this gentrified store for zines or any other items unless they re-evaluate the items they sell. It's obvious who they are trying to appeal to. Zines are meant to be accessible and not a "cute" accent to your aesthetic. read more

Very much into this store. They have a wide selection of unique zines, as well as interesting books, jewelry, clothes and housewares. Like many hipsters, the service may seem rude, but they're pretty helpful if you just ask. Otherwise, they tend to leave you alone and don't want to bother you. It's easy to get lost and explore-- even feel overwhelmed, by the amount of zines and books they have in their store (against the wall.) I like the fact that it feels very much like a makers store, and that I'm buying from either local artisans, or independent vendors through this store. The zines, books, housewares and jewelry are up in front, while the further back you go, you can see clothing and bigger items. I would definitely come back here, even though it is a bit pricey. I feel comfortable paying $$$ for the items though, as I know I'm supporting local and independent artists/writers/craftsmakers! read more

I've had more than one bad experience here which is totally unfortunate. I live in the neighborhood, own a local small business and have frequented this shop more than necessary during the pandemic to show my support. I recently stopped in to pick up a candle as a gift...I rushed in and obviously missed the memo that they are still requiring masks. The only store on Valencia to my knowledge since the mandate lifted. The girl at the cash wrap asked me if I had a mask and I reached in my bag to get it. As I was pulling it out of my purse she demanded I walk to the front door to put it on and then re-enter the store. This is where I draw the line. I'm happy to comply with your mask request but when you take it out of context and cause a scene, that's entirely another problem. Hate to say it but I unfortunately will not be shopping here any longer especially when I can purchase the identical items at other local shops around the city. read more

Needles & Pens is a nice balance of zines and DIY publishing with more professionally-produced photography magazines and a table full of odd books. The space is clean and well-lit, zines are organized in a way that makes sense, and the books are well chosen, the kinds of books that you end up flipping through because they look like they'll have cool pictures and then they turn out to be interesting. Needles & Pens isn't on the same scale as Quimby's even if only because of its smaller size, but it is well worth checking out. read more

Last week I lost my favorite earrings, but heard from a friend that they were still selling them at Needles & Pens on Valencia. I accidentally stopped at the 16th st store first and was told to ask for 'Breezy' on Valencia. When I got to the correct location they were having a bustling party for Pride weekend, but Breezy was right at the front to assist. I asked about my earrings, which I couldn't see out on display. She showed me the earrings she was wearing and said 'these earrings?' She was wearing the exact style that I had lost! She proceeded to tell me that the design was no longer being made but she knows the artist and could ask for them to be remade and that she had just found her pair in a drawer that morning after assuming them lost a long time ago. She then took her pair out of her ears, disinfected them, and sold them to me (at a discount!!). I couldn't be more happy to be reunited with my fave accessory and was blown away at how sweetly Breazy handled helping me out. A lovely little happenstance at a great store. Thanks! read more

Awesome little shop with locally made items. Their zine selection is delicious, with a wide variety of artists and writers. I went in twice during my stay and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. There is a plethora of gorgeous jewelry here, local artists of course, and the staff is very patient about letting you try things on. I loved their legit DIY spirit when they were back on 16th Street, and now their roomy new location lets them stock even more cool stuff - really beautiful jewelry, lovely clothes and a kids section that's tiny but sells Kim Krans' sweet board book. I can stand in front of their giant zine display wall forever like I'm at an art gallery, entranced. Only the art here costs like five dollars. With the Mission changing in so many ways that bum me out seeing this shop grow and thrive makes me super happy. read more

Favorite spot in the city. I love talking to Breezy whenever I go in and looking at all of the new zines. If I am going to be honest, I probably wouldn't be as interested and passionate about zinemaking if it weren't for this store.
