This place is a cross stitchers dream, they have tons of patterns! I spent over an hour here and never felt rushed. When I finally found my pattern the ladies were incredibly helpful. As a beginner cross stitcher they gave me tons of information about my pattern and helped convert it onto a 18 ct Aida fabric instead of the 36ct recommendation on the patter! Yikes, I don't know how anyone can work that small! They also had this glorious hand dyed silk floss I am working with. Best part, this place is only 15 minutes from my house. I love this store! Melissa is the queen of needlepoint. She helped me find a designer online that sells handpainted Christmas stocking canvases. I'm a needlepoint beginner, so she walked me through what supplies I would need and she also taught me how to needlepoint. She gets so excited when you bring in a project and she has so much helpful advice on how to spruce up your project (ex. beads, French knots, long stitches, etc.) She is so passionate about this hobby and her excitement is infectious. Their prices are good and all of their staff is always friendly and excited to see your progress. Post-covid, I will be happy when they resume their classes! I've been in every few Saturdays to ask for her help and she's always upbeat and knowledgeable. What a great local store! read more

I came in to browse while I was in the area. They seem to have a nice selection of yarns as well as a small supply of embroidery threads and patterns. There was a knitting circle going on, and the staff (that I could see) seemed to be more concerned with the other knitters than anyone who came in the door. Stopped here on our way to Norfolk - what an excellent store! The woman running the store greeted me warmly, gave me a quick rundown of the shop and then just left me to wander. My husband was with me (aka The Yarn Hater) and she sent him next door to the coffee and cupcake shop, much appreciated! There was a large table in the front to sit and knit, aisles were wide.The prices were a wide range going from affordable to high end, tons of patterns, great sale bins - it was just a really nice shop. I stopped in this afternoon to get some yarn, although "stopped in" isn't exactly right - it's a destination errand for me since I live in Fairfax. It's worth the trip, however. Today the woman who was working asked if I needed anything in particular, so I told her about my project and she took me to the pertinent section. She explained the yarns, their care, their pricing, asked questions so she could give a good recommendation. As she left me to browse I showed her the pattern which was on Ravelry. A few minutes later she came over and said she had looked it up and found notes from other knitters who had made the project. The information she had really helped me decide on a weight and fiber. This is the same woman who was there at my last visit, right after Christmas. I was curious about some of the care symbols on the silk blends, and she looked up the information for me. I didn't buy the silk that day, but now that I know it can be dry-cleaned it's in line in my head for a sweater for my sister. Aside from the wonderful customer service, the shop is amazing in its selection. It's worth it to me to just spend time looking around even if I don't have a project to buy for. It is truly a gem. read more

It was actually a while ago that I went in here but I will say that my visits were a good experience. They were friendly and greeted us taking time to explain the layout of the store. They had a nice little clearance section that they pointed out. When we were checking out they told us about the classes they offered, and on my second visit they took the time to briefly explain how to cable knit. Their prices are comparable to other yarn shops, and their knitting needles are actually cheaper than some chain stores. (But the chain stores offer a 50% off coupon.) They almost always have groups of people knitting in the store, they seem friendly but I am little too socially awkward to join. This is definitely worth a visit if you want a bigger selection of yarn and just neat stuff to look at. read more

I come here about once a year or so, and while the inventory is huge, the customer service is a bit lacking. I always come in the entrance by the cash register (does the other door even open?) and not once have I been greeted. The staff and their friends tend to huddle in the back, chatting and knitting, and the last time I was there I even walked past their table a few times before anyone acknowledged me. I'm not a needy customer, but I do spend a lot when I go to yarn stores so a "hello" would be nice! The first time I went in, I bought an armful of yarn, and when I put it on the counter, the employee asked what if I had plans for the bounty. I told her I crocheted, and she said something along the lines of "Why on earth would you waste all this yarn on CROCHET?" Her friends eyes bugged out of their heads! With an attitude like that, I almost didn't bother going back. Go if you're looking for a large inventory, a fun little clearance room, and be sure to go on Tuesdays. That's when there are discounts. I also suggest you only go if you're window-shopping or you know what you want, because you'll mostly be ignored. read more

The owner Marti and her staff are very helpful with picking out yarn and patterns. I have gone to this store when I had pattern issues and they helped me fix them on a couple of occasions. They have done the same for one of my friends. They also offer the free service of rewinding any yarn you purchase from them into a neat spool. The 20% of sale is now on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Saturday on all yarn (excluding sale items and special orders). You can sit around a table and knit or crochet if you like. There are classes if you want to learn. It's a pretty neat place. read more

I knit and crochet and after getting better I wanting to branch out from Walmart yarn. Most of the stores I first were super intimidating with staff that was just there to ring up your purchase and really poor selections. Needles in the Haymarket, however, is the only one that has a really friendly owner who I don't feel is talking down to me if I go in with a stupid question, an excellent selection (largest selection I've seen at least!), and good prices (it is fancy yarn, it clearly won't be Walmart priced but their is something for every budget). Not only have I gone back several times, I am just waiting for them to open so I can get some hard to find 9" circs that I know she always has. read more

I visited on the way home in dc from Charlottesville. The selection was amazing. It made me feel happy and comfortable when I saw some ladies were knitting together there having fun.
