This place is 100% hype and couldn't care less about their customers. The staff was more interested in their private conversation than in assisting me. You know that feeling when you walk into a store and feel like you are a burden to the staff? Like you aren't wanted there and/or are a nuisance? Well, that is the feeling I had from the very moment I stepped in. And, let me tell you - there are a number of similar reviews from other customers experiencing the same thing. So, the owner needs to learn about customer service, then hire the right folks and train them properly. I'm sure the owner will post a response that defends the awful staff and makes silly excuses- so I'm waiting for that :) I will never spend a penny here and would not recommend wasting any time here. I came here because my best friend is into knitting. I'm more into people knitting me things. But I do have to say this store as it may be slightly tiny on the lower level it definitely packs a lot of product inside they had a variety of yarns and all things needed to make your next project upstairs. There was a project room where they have classes. I can't speak about the value, but what I can say is my friend definitely made some purchases that day so I'm pretty sure she felt it was decently priced to make a purchase a few hours away from home. The staff were extremely helpful with just about every customer, including my friend. Great fiber shop to check out! There are so many options to choose from and it's very well organized. The yarns are more expensive than if you bought some from a big box store, but they're much higher quality. The staff were really helpful to me as I was looking for some certain types of yarn in a specific color way for a baby blanket and they gave me multiple options with different explanations of what each benefit was. I came in as a first time knitter looking for a circular needles in a specific size and yarn for my first pattern. It is not often I visit a local yarn store (LYS) while on travel, but am so glad that I did this time. The owner was willing to have me shop downstairs while some remodeling was going on upstairs (eg it was closed to the general public). Enjoyed her yarn selection and needles. She was knowledgeable and helpful. She didn't have either of the yarns that I was looking for, but am happy with my yarn and needle purchases. I was looking for lace-weight yarn in natural/ecru/off-white to make a baby bonnet and booties set. Fibre Space was the only LYS of the three I called which had any, and in fact had two offerings. Unfortunately, when I arrived two days one of the yarns had been sold out, a victim of Trump's chaotic tariffs on yarn. There was, however, Jamieson's of Shetland, which was great. I have been shopping at Fibre Space for over a decade, and they have consistently been helpful and kind. I've witnessed pushy customers met with gentle replies as they inquire about the time needed to wind their 20 hanks. I've also seen staff walk circles around the shop with patrons, discussing various projects and helping them gather ideas for new ones. Their selection of yarn, notions, and books is always stunning. After visiting several other yarn stores, I can confidently say that none compare. I do wish they would expand and update their web store--I think they could do incredibly well with a stronger online presence. My wife is the one who really enjoys shopping here. I'm usually tending to the toddler who's trying to touch everything in the shop. I thought it was small, but no!!! There's a second floor!!! There's a lot of beautiful variety and selection for your flock and fiber needs. I don't know the value of everything, I don't knit or crochet. It's beautiful also keeps me warm. You often feel like you are asking the stupidest questions and irritating the impatient person waiting on you. This is a super cute shop with a great selection of indie dyers, both local and international. The space is bright and welcoming, everything is full of color, and the service is that perfect mix of unobtrusive when you want to browse and helpful when you need something. I walked out with some super pretty yarn from some local dyers, as well as something from a company I'd been wanting to try for a while. If I lived closer, I'd definitely be back soon. The shop is maybe a 10-minute walk from a blue line Metro stop - it's not a hard walk, but there are cobblestone/brick parts of the sidewalk, so just be aware of that if walking doesn't come easy to you. read more

I was in Old Town, and I decided to give fibre space a try since it had been some time since my last visit. I went in looking for some fingering weight yarn. They had a wide selection of the yarn in different blends, colors, and price points. I settled on a pretty rainbow color that reminds me of what I imagine mermaid scales to look like. This time, the staff was very polite and helpful. They are also taking their COVID precautions very seriously, so I was asked to wait outside while my yarn was being wound into a ball. One of the employees brought the yarn out to me and made sure to ask if I needed a bag. While I was in there, I heard them interacting with a mother and daughter. The daughter was knitting her first project, a scarf. I could hear the staff helping, they made very good suggestions and had great tips for a beginner knitter (ex. Use wooden needles instead of metal, as a new knitter). So I can confidently say that their customer service has really improved! Also, they have more of a diverse staff now. As a BIPOC this was really nice to see, and it made the experience even more welcoming. read more

I've been to so many yarn stores but this is my absolute fav. I took the sock knitting class with Jen and she was so patient with me and replied to all my questions. I came into the shop so many times with questions and all of the staff there patiently and graciously helped me. I even got frustrated and started frogging my sock, and I walked in and they helped me put it back on my needles. They all know their stuff and are amazingly sweet. Fibre Space is my favorite yarn shop in the DMV! I stopped by looking for a few skeins of Manos del Uruguay for a project that I'd wanted to start but, one thing led to another and the next thing I knew, I had spent half a day in that store, discovered and fell in love with several new yarn brands, began a new project, registered for a workshop, and made new friends. This is the perfect place to learn, share, and bond with fellow yarnholics. They keep SO many yarns in stock, two floors full to be exact, books, patterns, bags, bowls, notions, accessories, etc... they'll even wind up your yarn for you if it's purchased from them. They can usually wind them on-the-spot, but if it's busy or if you're not able to wait, you can come back to pick up at a later time. They'll occasionally host various events and trunk shows that are really fun, too! The staff is very knowledgeable and passionate about knitting/crocheting. Most are friendly and more than willing to help with anything you might need. The workshops are amazing and so much fun! I love coming here so much. Just seeing and touching on the beautiful yarns make me want to knit all the things! You'll quickly notice that the price points are higher here than places you might be accustomed to. Quality over quantity is their mantra, as they always stock the very best quality and most gorgeous yarns I've ever seen. This place is very well-known. There are always people popping in and out to pick up various items for their stash, so if you see something you love, I'd advise you to GET IT! I can not recommend this shop. I can not understand why the staff is not welcoming and helpful. There is no reason to not be helpful to customers . I have been in several times, I always have said I would try again. Over , nope . In response to owner: I wanted to cancel only one class because the instructor had given me the wrong instructions in the previous lesson. I did not request a refund for that lesson. But I thought it truly unfair that I should pay a second $40 to the instructor after the first lesson where she incorrectly pinned and seamed the sleeves of my sweater . I did not berate your staff . The person repeated and repeated your policy and would not allow me to explain the issue of the first lesson. I did not write all this the first time because if you had simply refunded me it would have been settled. I did not want the instructor to feel badly. Mistakes happen. On the other hand, as I wrote above ,I have been in your shop several times, and every time your staff has always been the same. They are not welcoming , seem taxed if asked a question , and in general are rather disinterested in providing assistance. A community listens and understands. As far as this issue is concerned, sometimes a policy does not apply 100% percent of the time. Again, this is the only time I requested a refund from you. Believe me, I will be pleased to not patronize your business in the future . read more

Fibre Space sells high-quality yarn across the spectrum, needles and all manner of other tools, some weaving equipment, a decent selection of books and patterns, and regular classes. It even has tablets set up to access Ravelry, the primary online pattern database. The breadth of offerings is quite impressive. Prices on the yarn are a bit high, because they try very hard to focus on quality, boutique yarns you can't get just anywhere. So if you're just starting out or otherwise looking to knit in volume, you're probably better off at Michael's. But, when I'm making one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones or items for my own regular use, I shop here. read more

It's important to admit when you're wrong, and I have to admit that I was wrong about Fibre Space. The owner reached out to me to urge me to come back and try again. I was really impressed with what I saw. Way better selection of yarn than the last time I was there, and lots of very cool notions (shout out for the crying frog pins) and branded pieces (I grabbed a really cool all purpose ruler and needle sizer with the FS logo on it). The staff (VJ and Kerry) were both very kind and made an effort to make me feel welcome. One thing I noticed from last time is that this store probably has more patterns and swatches available for purchase than any other store in the area. The store is moving soon and I can't wait to see what they do with the new space. Moral of the story: don't judge your LYS on just one visit. My friends and I came in to Fibre Space for a first visit this past Saturday. That was probably our first mistake as it was super busy- but good for them, means it's a good place (or in a good location!). The selection is wonderful and easily categorized into yarn weight. I thought their prices were pretty decent for boutique and I was pleasantly surprised by the needle selection and range of options. They had a whole wall of notions and lots of completed projects around that listed the yarn and pattern used (of course except the ONE I wanted to make to which an employee said "yeah we don't sell that pattern, it's just out for show"... not cool, what a tease!). One gentleman, Barry, was super nice and helpful. He explained a few patterns to me and talked about a class he taught. There was a group of people congregating in one area (not in a class, which was also going on) that were just sitting and knitting, and they were very huffy and puffy any time one of us tried to step through their group to get to the yarn on the other side. I got side-eye a few times which was irritating considering I was simply trying to purchase some yarn and not step on their belongings all spread out on the floor- perhaps you have to be a part of some elite group for the pack to be friendly. The only other complaint is that the person that rang my purchase up was very standoffish and unhelpful- which is unusual for a neighborhood yarn spot. I tried to chat them up and they just weren't having it. Then AFTER I was done with my purchase and waiting for my yarn to be wound, I heard them ask the next person if they were a preferred member in their system, and that person was handed their goods in a fun little burlap bag with their logo while mine was in a clear plastic bag. I asked if I could become a member and the gentleman looked me up and down and shrugged and said if I felt like waiting he would take a look at my receipts, and if I wanted the fancy bag I had to purchase one. I was just really turned off by the attitude at the front desk. That being said, I'll probably try again if and when I can find a parking space! read more

Great local yarn shop that is well lit, spacious, well organized, and has a nice blend of mainstream and indie/local yarns at varying price points. They also have a very good supply of needles, which are very well organized both by length and size. I found exactly the size I needed, which usually doesn't happen. I mostly looked at the fingering and sport weight yarns as I'm a sock yarn person. They had a pretty decent selection, though you need to check the fiber content if looking for sock yarns as all the fingering were pretty much together and the sock-suitable amidst the not-sock-suitable. Prices are reasonable, though there are some very high end options that will cost you, there are others that are quite budget friendly while still being nice quality. They have a swift & winder and will ball up your yarn for you if you need. If I lived nearby, I'd be a regular! read more

Review #1 for 2019 goes to Fibre Space! This place saved my life during the 35 day government shutdown, as they offered a place to pick up a new hobby and keep my sanity with other furloughed folks. The decor is bright and fun, and they've got classroom spaces upstairs and a couch to hang out downstairs. If your pup is well behaved, you can bring them along to shop, or just hang out on the couch while you work on your latest project. Bonus that they're a woman-owned small business. Fibre Space has a wide selection of beautiful yarns, and a good selection with some affordable options for a specialty shop. I haven't taken a formal class yet, but the class offerings look amazing. They also have a rewards program, and can even look up your old yarn purchases for you in case you run out of yarn on a project and need some more. As a new knitter, one of the best things about Fibre Space is how welcoming and helpful the staff is. Can't read a pattern? Don't understand where you dropped a stitch? Why is my shutdown scarf weird looking? Will I lose yarn chicken? (yes) They've got answers! Or can at least they can point you in the right direction and save you hours of aggravation. They even helped me with a major scavenger hunt for my lost phone (reunited!), so I cannot compliment their supportive customer service enough. If you are looking to spend a small fortune on the most delicious feeling yarn, this would be a good place to go. Fibre Space is not for the faint of heart (or the slight of cash), and it is easy to become a little overwhelmed with all of the (albeit beautiful) options. I would avoid coming here on a Saturday as it gets a little like a madhouse and you will want to take your time perusing the goods (lesson learned!). As a newbie crocheter, I felt really overwhelmed with the options and unlike other people, I sadly did not feel like the staff was very helpful. Maybe if I had taken a class here first and had an "in", that would make a difference, but I felt like an outsider looking in to this strange and beautiful crafty world. I did purchase some yarn - gorgeous raspberry colored soft fine wool - and made a few baby gifts from them for friends & family. The yarn selection is really lush, with brands I'd never seen before up in Boston (or in the yarn store I know in Bethesda or Looped in D.C., which I happen to like). Lots of small manufacturers and sumptuous selections. Of particular note, they have Road to China, this gorgeous, squeezable luxury yarn from Peru made of baby alpaca, cashmere, camel, silk. It was sent here to tempt me into spending all my money. Also of note, I couldn't find Malabrigo (could be my own fault) but they have plenty of it at Looped. That's what I like - different selection from other D.C. stores so I don't feel like I'm cheating and have that many more delicious yarns to try. I could spend hours wandering in this store just touching things. It's not huge, just stuffed. With wondrousness. Oh, and the colorways...my goodness, the colorways. Also brilliant, they make a point of labeling their yarn when information is hard to find on the label, and stick the info label right on the tag. This means you have a clear, easy-to-find, uniform system for finding prices, yarn name, colorway, country of origin, fiber composition, weight in grams, yardage, descriptive weight (e.g. fine, worsted, etc.), needle size, and gauge. My biggest complaint about many yarn stores I have attended is that I have to put my fibrous reverie on pause to painstakingly dig for info (which sometimes isn't even labeled on the yarn at all). The store is also well organized with a clear logic to the yarn (and other product) placement. I really only gave the book and pattern selections a cursory glance, but it looked like they had a well-selected, if small, selection. read more
