We were there as part of the Lambdalinks golf league. I had played this course once earlier last year. The course is in great condition. Absolutely love the fairways and rough ain't bad either. Love the nice chunk of fairway that you can take out if you hit your irons well. We make sure we fill our divots after every shot. Bunkers are nicely maintained with soft sand as well. The drainage system is one of the best in the area. It had rained over night and until our tee time, but the course did not feel like it had rained. Kudos to the course architect and grounds keepers for doing a great job. Greens were so true to the speed of hour putt. Neither too fast nor too slow. Overall, it was a great day to play this course. read more

I met a few buddies at Needwood a couple weekends ago for morning 7:15am round. It was a beautiful morning to be out golfing (but isn't every morning)! The check in process for the round was quick and easy - we paid about $85 a piece for 18 holes + the cart. We checked in with the start a few minutes before our tee time and we were sent along on our way to the first tee. Got to like an on time start. Prior to our first tee, we had some time to warmup on their practice putting and chipping greens. They have one green that allows putting and chipping and a second smaller green closer to the clubhouse that is putting only. I wouldn't say either green is large enough for a full practice session with multiple people using them but for a few swings to prep before an early round they worked great. The course itself was in solid condition - the fairways and greens were even and well kept. The level of difficulty was solid for a group of intermediate golfers. And the cart paths were well kept and pretty easy to follow. Overall, I'm not sure the course warrants an $85 price tag - I've played at similar quality of courses for half the price but maybe that's what I get for booking at a peak time on a Saturday. If I return (which I would) I'd book an evening round and enjoy the evening rates which seemed to be in the $40 range; I think that's more on par with the quality of the course and it's amenities. read more

This is located close to my work so it's very convenient to play nine holes after work. You just need to reserve your tee time online and pay when you get there. I haven't had any issues with their Marshall's, but you do have to make sure you keep up with the pace. If you can't, let the other golfers pass you. If you are a beginner, the executive course is a good start. The front nine is pretty straightforward, but for a good challenge go for the back nine. The golf course is usually in great shape so no complaints from me. They do a have a driving range if you just want to hit some balls. I usually bring my pull-cart but if you're playing 18 holes, I would rent the cart. read more

Very good golf course. I have gone here for over five years and the food is better than other golf courses I have been to. Thankfully the driving range does not have color coded distances that you have to decode, they just have the plain and simple sign with a number on it. I play there all the time. I have 46 rounds in Montgomery County courses I've never canceled. I got there a little early today and my teatime coming around around 1:19. I didn't feel well. I've been sick at the house now for two hours. It's 3:02 PM, I went in and tried to cancel and said I didn't feel well and I would prefer probably not to pass out on your golf course and to head home. And I asked for a refund after 26$ on cigars. And $35 on beer.. I'm an Eagle package member and respect the golf courses. the front desk asked why I like to cancel. I said I don't feel well.. and the other lady said why should we refund your money in our prime spot how are we gonna fill it? As I lay here in my bed, not feeling well I am am disgusted at how they treated me. One older staff member lost his mind on me after the starter sent me out. Unprofessionally blamed me for their miscommunication. He embarrassed me and himself driving up to the first hole green to give me grief unnecessarily. Felt like a course geared towards an older crowd. The course was nice and well maintained but it simply wasn't a good experience overall. If you're under 50 and want an enjoyable round I suggest a different course as there are plenty in the area. read more

Being from Rockville, this has become my home course. I really started playing a lot here in the past year and therefore this review may be a bit biased. The rates are very competitive. If you purchase a tee time on GolfNow.com (I wish I had a free round for every time I plugged this site), you can get 18+cart for around $22-28. Weekends are usually $30+. The twilight rates are hard to beat -- at $15, you can walk as many holes till the sun sets, which, more often than not, is a full front or back 9. The executive course is great too (7 par 3's and 2 par 4's that play pretty challenging) and it's all for $14 to walk. The driving range is nice and it's $5 to get about 50 balls. The markers extend to about 225 with the net running into the 11th fairway. The proshop isn't somewhere I'd shop, but they have a decent selection of goods available. The grill on the 2nd floor is relatively cheap, offers good food, and provides nice views of the 18th green. The course is usually in very good shape. The greens are very large and easy to hit. Unfortunately, they are a bit slow and I don't have a lot of success putting on them. The course offers a nice array of holes, including a beautiful par 3 over water and two long back-to-back par 5's. There are nice elevation changes off the tee box and many holes are much more complicated than "hit it straight and long." The layout is definitely fun and challenging. I've also taken a lesson here and I must say that in just over 50 minutes, I added 15 yards to each club and was able to start correcting the devastating slice i hit with driver. All in all, worth it. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed. read more

The professional instructor's leave a lot to be desired. Extremely over priced for the service rendered. You'll spend tons of money and will likely not learn much. We found one instructor arrogant and condescending. Another was stuck in the 50's and didn't use any modern teaching techniques. This course has an excellent layout with plenty of elevation changes and challenging holes. It is not the longest or shortest course in the Montgomery County Golf (MCG) system. The condition of the course is very good. Just rating the course alone would give it 4 Stars. However, mid-week it had one of the worse pace of plays of any MCG course I played (started at 11:30am and ended at almost 6pm on a Wed!). I was told by an employee of another MCG course who was in my foursome, that they overbooked by splitting the tee times, as evidenced by teeing off the 10th hole. Despite slow times, they did nothing to speed up play. Wish they had rangers like Falls Road. Based on the course and closeness to home I will play again, hoping the pace of play is better - will definitely avoid on a weekend. read more

Had a 10:57 T time on thePar 3 course today (Sunday). First time back in 10 yrs. I don't recommend it. No starter, group of five tee'd off in front of us. Things stacked up immediately. Didn't tee off until 11:20. Still no starter. Had to call clubhouse when we finally realized no one was managing course, it was noon by the time we walked off the third hole. Group behind us got in car and went home. Somebody did finally come out to fix the fivesome, but it took a call to make it happen. read more

It is a good course that is reasonably priced, however the starter made us wait for 2 guys that were 10 min late even though no one was on the green on the 1st hole & we told him that the late start was stressing me out. The guys who showed up late NEVER apologized & then didn't talk to me throughout the entire round which made for a miserable day. Montgomery County Maryland does a great job maintaining the nine MC Public Golf Courses. Needwood has become one of the local favorites with its signature 18th hole. The staff at Needwood has turned over in recent years but their courtesy and professionalism has not changed. The course is challenging but fair. I believe I have Parred every hole just not in the same round. Needwood clientele mirrors the residents of the County. Good public golf course that is owned by the county. Prices for both the full course and the executive course are reasonable. Full course is not incredibly difficult. This is where I learned how to golf and was able to manage the course reasonably well after several weeks of playing. Fairways are well kept, roughs are not too bad. Greens depend on the season. Unfortunately like most DC course, it gets dried out over the winter. Luckly this winter I spent most of my time in San Diego and San Francisco. I appreciate how well maintained Needwood is and the fact that there is a good mix of par 3, 4 and 5 holes. The crowd Needwood attracts is pretty good. There is an old guy (Tim) who calls himself the assistant manager who is the worst human you can encounter. I was paired with another gentleman and two elderly ladies and they all felt the same. He was overly rude and obnoxious. He also kept putting his hands on the ladies while they kept telling him not to touch them. Worst experience in mcg. That's too bad because the course is decent but they hire a rude, sexist, molester. Avoid at all costs. read more

Went golfing here for the first time and loved the executive nine holes! They are short enough to use your putter, but great for a beginner golfer! Although, I must say, it was a little confusing to figure out the path from the 8th to the 9th hole, but the setup makes sense! Oh and the driving range is right next to the parking lot which is a plus! You can hit your balls further with drivers, etc given the driving range has a hill backdrop! Good course layout. Well maintained fairways and short rough, especially for a county course. Had a couple holes with higher than normal rough, made it a little difficult to find the balls. The water is really only in play on the Par-4 18th hole, which got my only 2 lost balls of the round :-( Can get backed up in mid-to-late weekend afternoon when it's nice out. Clubhouse is basic and don't expect much from the cafe / restaurant. Definitely a course I would play again. read more

Just a tad better than Northwest which I use as my benchmark for golf courses (since it's my home course). The conditions are very well kept and it's a good meeting point for all my friends who live in Gaithersburg. Twilight fees aren't that unreasonable. And the course isn't too tough. My favorite hole is 15. There's something about Par 3's with a big water hazard in the front that makes it fun to hit. read more

Executive course review: I love good executive courses - when I only have two hours or the main course is too busy a good par three does the trick and reminds me of where I learned to play. Needwood's exec course is one of the best (of a small list) that I've played. There are 7 par threes (two of which are pitch and putts) and two par fours (which are legit par fours but pretty basic) which makes for a nice variety. The greens were well kept, the pace was good and the chance to use more than a wedge was nice. The only course complaint is that the area near the greens are overly flat - only a few bunkers, ridges and dells - so you don't really get a good test of your short game. For $14 this was a great value. read more

This is one of the better golf courses in Montgomery County that is considered public. The fairways and greens are well maintained. The course can get crowded but everyone is patient usually. The front 9 seem to be a little easier than the back 9. The course offers holes with varying degrees of difficulty. The price is right, especially for afternoon hours approx $25. read more

A gorgeous day for golf, Needwood is still in pretty good shape after all these years, first time I've played it in tens years. We got around in just under 4 hours, my score is not important, just felt good to knock the rust off. Kudos to the ranger who help us find some errant tee shots on 9. The cart person was kind enough to wait for us to putt out on 7. Price for a bottled water and a small bag of peanuts, not outrageous. The only blemish was the starter. Someone pissed in his cheerios this morning. Takes our tickets and then reassigns us to a different cart. Not, "excuse me, but would you mind taking this cart please." It was, "NO, not that cart this one!" with an eye roll. So we load up the cart sit for a few minutes, our tee time was in two minutes, figure we are good, so we ask if we can go, he just looks at us for a couple seconds and give us an emphatic "No" with another eye roll. A minute goes buy and then he deems us worthy to leave his presence with a "you can go now". Just a douche bag. read more

I play here most often. it's conveniently located to my house and it's one of the better courses in this area. came with my brother and played the first nine on the main course. got right in with only a couple groups ahead of us. no one was above average, and me and my brother are definitely below average. pace was fine and had a better experience than my last time on the executive course. greens and fairways are well kept and the course is designed for beginners to pros. will return and the prices are very reasonable. read more

Was looking forward to a enjoyable round of golf with my husband and another couple. The weather was beautiful, the course was in good condition. Since it was Labor Day, we knew the course would be busy. I think we got the last tee time available for a foursome. Twosomes were paired up with singles and other twosomes. After playing the first hole and heading to hole 2, the Marshall aproached us and asked that we keep up with the group ahead of us, blah, blah, blah. We thought, someone was already complaining? The group in front of us had just left the green and this Marshall was keeping us from moving fwd. As it turned out, we ended up having to wait at almost every hole! The foursome in front of us were very good golfers so they were not causing the slow play. By the back nine, the pace wasn't getting any better. As I was about to hit my tee shot, a couple headed toward us and passed us, saying they were looking for a club they had left somewhere on the previous holes. As I was about to hit my 2nd shot, they came back to ask us if we saw her pitching wedge! I couldn't believe that they drove right up to us on the fairway instead of waiting up at the green. When my friend and I said no, they then proceeded to ride their cart to where our husbands were to ask them! Then they just drove their cart across the fairway right in front of me without so much as a wave or apology. It was at this point we realized the cause of the slow play. They ended up in front of us because their 2some had left them behind and the foursome in front of us had passed them. For 2 holes, we watched them making out, driving on the fairway and the green on a par 3! Where was that Marshall? She was also dressed inappropriately in a yoga type outfit (short knit skirt with low cross over front knit top). We stopped playing and headed back to the pro shop. My husband complained but I doubt if they did anything. Quite a disappointing round. I guess Needwood doesn't really care who they let on their course. read more

Needwood Golfcourse is a Kindergarten. If you like to spend a day as babysitter instead of golf, you have to go to Needwood. They put children who can not pay golf in your flight. The children destroyed the fairways , the greens, have no clue about the golf rules etc. You waist your money and your golf game There is a much nicer golf course in the area, it called Little Bennett. Needwood is a terrible course and the manager of the course too. It was a very very bad experience. read more

Had a horrible round at Needwood. The staff was harassing our foursome stating we were taking too long. We finished the round in 4 hours 10 minutes and there was no one waiting on us to finish a hole. They came out 4 times to tell us to speed up. It was ridiculous. This is a nice municipal golf course, but I give it 3 stars because the pace of play is always unreasonably slow, and there is rarely a marshall to speed it up. Because the course is a little bit short and a little bit easy, more mediocre golfers play it, so the pace is slow. Also the carts are old gas clunkers that need to be replaced. read more

This course is my home course, i'm 15 years old and break 80 on it almost every time. It usually in great condition. It is quite easy thought compared to some of the other county courses like little bennett and hampshire greens, but if you want a course that gives you the opportunity to play well with good conditions, this is your course. Only thing about playing on weekends is you can have 5 hour+ rounds which really sucks read more
