Quicken Tournament Review:…read more Kyle Stanley is the 2017 Quicken Loan Champion. We received an invitation to come watch the tourney & hang out in one of the VIP tents...it was good times. The Par 70 golf course is situated in the middle or amongst Avenel Farm, providing regal views of the residential, equestrian, swimming & tennis amenities. The landscape & upkeep was impressive throughout the golf course & surrounding greenery. The staff inside our tent were extremely hospitable, especially during the interment rain fall as they reset as many times necessary to accommodate everyone. The food & beverages were decent. I even popped my head into the Mad House to look around & the employees on hand were just as friendly. The only negative point of our visit was the interaction with the red shirt staff at the main entrance to the tourney if you did not have a parking pass...we opted to take Uber. Aside from their constant screaming that they work for the Tiger Woods Foundation, they were rude & boisterous to the Courtesy Shuttle Operators & individuals seeking assistance. Other than that, it was an enjoyable & entertaining 1st visit to watch championship golf.

The course keepers do a job that is nothing short of magical, and even in the winters the course is in beautiful shape. He's a Potomac resident so this place is near his home which is super convenient if I'm with him. The perk. They have a grill. Considering there aren't a lot of restaurants in Potomac, this was nice to know. Love that they have coffee. Staff is always nice. The course was clean and buying balls was easy. I'll be learning how to perfect my stroke thanks to him! Love a man who makes life better. For now, since I don't have anything to compare this to, I give it 5 stars! It does the job. They have stuff for sale too. My sweet friend purchased my first ever golf glove! Thanks to him for being kind and helping me learn. My Coach, my sweet Friend, my Fun, my Adventure! #GRATEFUL

But the food might actually be the best part, and that's thanks to Angela, who is the best. The hot dogs? Best in town. The chicken and tuna salads? Angela makes them fresh every morning, from scratch, with love you can actually taste. The onion rings? Genuinely perfect. And a full meal runs you under ten bucks, which in Potomac feels like a clerical error in my favor. Here's the real scandal: this little snack bar is putting out better food than Congressional Country Club a few miles up the road. You'd think paying those dues for bar food this far below par would have the members storming out in protest -- but somehow not one of them has come out "disgruntled." Frankly, the lack of outrage is the most bipartisan thing to happen in this county all year. Honestly, just a sincere thank you to Angela, who puts her foot in it every single time without fail -- she's a gift, and so is the rest of the awesome staff.

We did not know what to expect and left with a great workout, fun experience, and my wife, 4 year old daughter, and I all interested in golf. First off, the staff was amazing! Marquis has been golfing since he was 6 and gave us some quick tips that immediately improved our swing. They also had great cocktails and food and we loved having a private room where we could play music, watch the game, and play and learn at our own pace. They have multiple games including a driving range, courses, and a game where you aim at monsters (which our daughter really enjoyed). The staff provided great recommendations on each game. We immediately signed up for a subscription- the prices were really reasonable, hours are accommodating, and we envision going on our own to practice, bringing our daughter (she's been asking to go back), or going with friends. This would also be a lot of fun for corporate events or team building even if you don't golf and we are looking forward to bringing our teams in the near future. Fun, great for many audiences, and an amazing resource for improving your game!

For those unfamiliar, the complex has three setups: the 18-hole Blue Course (regulation length where you can take a cart), the 9-hole White Course (an executive mix of par 3s and 4s), and the 9-hole Red Course, which is a walking-only par-3 loop. They also have a busy two-tier driving range and plenty of flat putting areas. If you are brand new to the game and do not have your own set yet, they make it easy by letting you borrow clubs, making it a very welcoming entry point for beginners. We played the Red Course on a Saturday morning ($20/person) and ran into some serious pacing hiccups. After starting about 15 minutes past our 8:00 AM tee time, we ended up waiting on literally every hole, dragging a short 9-hole walk out to an hour and a half. The compact routing is also pretty dicey safety-wise--the tee boxes sit right next to the greens, and we nearly took stray balls to the face twice, so you really have to keep your head on a swivel. Conditions were rough around the edges with mostly flat greens, rock-hard sand in the bunkers after the previous night's rain, bird droppings all over the grounds, and a main clubhouse building that feels noticeably run-down. Despite the rough shape, the setting is hard to beat. Being right on the water at Hains Point with planes flying overhead, cyclists looping the park, and The Wharf right across the river for post-round lunch gives it a great local vibe. There has been a lot of talk and planning around major overhauls and restorations for the course through the National Park Service and National Links Trust, and it honestly desperately needs that refresh. If the planned renovations eventually bring the drainage, clubhouse, and course layouts up to standard, this place could easily become a world-class municipal gem. For now, it is a fun, casual spot for a cheap practice round as long as you know what to expect.

The staff is also very friendly, as well as the fellow golfers I met on the course all seemed to be respectful of the game and the course itself. Yes the course can use some additional maintenance all around (the cart paths are all broken, the greens need to be mowed, it's really easy to lose your ball, even when you think you hit the fairway), but I found it to be overall enjoyable and challenging to play (the back nine is especially narrow and hilly), and would certainly return.

Pull carts are free, but half were broken. There were no tee box markers, so you just had to pick a spot. In fact, there were no signs on any hole. The fairways had more weeds than grass, and the grass was all overgrown. The greens are all ruined with weeds that make it impossible to read the green and make long putts. I wondered why anybody was there, then I realized all of the locals were just walking on and NOT paying. I would never return even if it was free. I read the Yelp reviews before I went, so I was somewhat prepared, but it was even worse than I expected. There is a plan to do a "major" renovation to the course during the next 1-2 years, so maybe one day it will be nice. The one positive, was that the lady that checked me in was pleasant, but I think she was the only one working on the entire course.
