I'm all about supporting small businesses in our area and I don't mind paying a couple dollars more for an item. But the other day I bought a new plug to go on the sewer cleanout pipe in my front yard because the one I had was damaged by a lawnmower. The Ace Hardware on Golf Road charges $24.99 for this item. But I found out that the Home Depot on Kensington Road only charges $11.52 So this morning I returned the item to Ace Hardware and told them why I was returning it. The owner happened to be standing there when I said why I was returning it because the cashier told me that the woman next to me was the owner. The owner had no comment and didn't seem to care that she was charging twice as much for something. That spoke volumes. Going forward I know exactly where to spend my money. read more

Went to this local Ace for a battery for my garage door opener a few months ago. While the young clerk pointed me in the right direction and I got the battery I needed, I was a bit surprised when I requested help to install it and was told he would have to charge me extra for that. Of course the store is in business to make a profit, but I sure miss the good old days when very knowledgeable older gents would bend over backwards to help you. This younger Ace rep was definitely a different breed. Today I find myself needing a key made. It's farther away from my house, but I think I'll try the Ace in Des Plaines, as my last visit to the Golf & Busse Ace left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied. read more

An example of things gotten better over time. Or I found new ways to appreciate the little hardware shop around the corner. Keys $1.99 each or more depending on the style. I get them done by the same guys usually. The older gentlemen tend to have more patience than their younger counterparts. Mark has been my usual key maker. I'll usually take a walk around the store looking for him before allowing anyone else to cut keys for me. Making keys is easy these days with the newer systems but it takes a person with confidence and patience to get it done correctly the first time! In the past I'd let whomever make me keys and find myself returning multiple times because of bad cuts. Regarding bad cuts, that's just something which can happen if a person doesn't check their work. (Look at the ridges!) It's more convenient to come here rather than Home Depot (Mt Prospect) which is about a fifteen minute drive away. Over time I've gotten to like this little shop for its convenience. My previous review mentions a fact most don't know about little hardware shops; which is that much of their product line is composed of items commonly needed for the housing in the area. Everything from fuses, piping, repair of common household problems, paint, lawn gear and more. A couple pluses to the small hardware shop experience other than the personalized services of their staff, are lowered prices on some nameless brand tools and hardware. Clearance shelves and blowout sales on past season accessories. Multi-packs of bottled water are usually cheap and one can usually find some cool one-off items like this awesome double sided sticker you can use to save your windshield from the crappy residue left behind by all the useless city stickers we have to purchase. Liquid latex gloves which are great for adding a coating to your hands before getting into a (last minute) dirty job or a kind of hand salve or hand glue to seal up small cuts on hands. The next time you walk into the little hardware store, take a look around, you may find some items of use. read more

Asked if they had 12 gauge copper wire and was put on hold for 20 minutes... after 15 minutes I called Ace Hardware on Lee street and asked the same question and they got back to me under a minute all while still on hold... these people clearly don't value our time and the kid who answered the phone and left me on hold still has me on hold while writing this review.. ridiculous read more

They advertise items on sale, go in to find they are out of stock, they refuse to issue a rain check for the advertised price. That's advertising fraud and wasting my time, just to lure me into their store. Beyond that, I have found their store personnel to be unfriendly, unhelpful and grudging. The place is half staffed with snotty, inept high school kids. And the place is waaaay overpriced, at least on some items, to the point of absurdity. It seemed to go downhill after the name change from Bowen to Neradt. I go to another hardware store, locally owned, whose prices are reasonable. So even Home Depot is much better than this place. read more

Oh Neradt Ace Hardware, you can call yourself what you want, but you'll always be "Bowen Ace Hardware" to me. You gave me my first job back in 1995 and you somehow kept me employed through over two years of high school (a good 13% of my life back then). I learned much about the ways of Sakrete, dowel rods, fasteners, and propane exchanges. Seriously, though, this is a great place whether you know what you want or need some serious help figuring out what you want, There is a dependability and a comfort to the store that always makes it my go-to spot for anything hardware-related (the stuff that will fit into my car, at least). Along with the fact that they cram as much product as physically possible into the store (in a good way), the folks that I've dealt with on the floor are genuinely helpful and seem to really care about what they do. Before messing around with one of the "big box" stores, head here first...if nothing else, you won't leave feeling like way too many precious moments of your life were stolen simply because you needed to buy a new 25' garden hose and a roll of duct tape. read more

When I get there, it's not on any of the shelves and no one can find it. This is why brick and mortar stores are having so much competition from online shoppers. This is an old school hardware store...and that's a good thing ! Have been here several times for odd jobs that require creative fixes and have always gotten the expertise I expect from floor personnel, especially the more experienced,elder employees. To me, big box (Menard's, Lowe's, Home Depot) hardware stores are not as concerned or as patient as a family owned franchise. Will definitely be back for my next home project needs. read more

I went into ace to try to find a solution to a problem with the siding on my house. I had a few pictures of the issue and flagged down the first person I could find, a nice guy who was helping multiple customers at the same time. He started to look at the pictures and then asked permission to go finish something he had already started (which I gladly accepted). Upon his return he provided me with a suggestion - a few screws, which cost me $5. Very happy with the solution and lots of $$$ saved! read more

I have to say this ace hardware location is about the worst I've ever seen. I've been there three times on separate occasions and have not spent $1 there. No one who works there seems to have a clue what's going on...that's only if they even ask if you need help. At other ace locations, I've had great experiences which is why I'm shocked at the bad service here. Yikes! This place has really gone downhill and, after years of relying on it, I think I'm in the market for a new hardware store. Today, there was only one kid on the floor to help and he had three people waiting in line for him. I asked the guy at the counter to if there was another salesman. He called over the speaker for assistance, which never came. Finally, I went back to the kid who called another kid (perhaps still in high school) from the back. The guy didn't really know how to help with my simple request for advice on plugging up problems with my hoses and spout shooting out lots of water. Yes, I knew I needed, at least some washers, but is that all? And I didn't know where the washers were. So I was left basically to fend on my own and the guy at the counter who rung me up left without even bagging my purchases. This place used to have some veteran sales guys who really knew about problem solving and were helpful. What a pity that I felt this place is awful and I wish I went somewhere else for help. read more

I've gone to this store for 18 years, because I believe in supporting local stores over big brands if possible. I LOVE the ADULT service people here - helpful and courteous and full of information. The TEEN service people have driven me away. I won't return. The teens lack social and customer skills. I think their intentions are good, but they need training. 1. If a teen is working the front counter and you walk into the store, you often get a glum, bored look 2. I had a teen interrupt me while speaking (several times) and grab a piece of paper from my hand, then turn his back on me while I was speaking. That was exasperating, but I let it go. He copped an attitude the entire time he was 'helping' me and didn't listen. 3. Teen girls who work the counters are more often than not standing behind 1 counter chatting, so you wait for 1 to run back to her station. 4. You'll almost never receive a "Thank you for shopping at Ace" if a teen works the counter (although that attitude is prevalent in many stores). I try to be pleasant and say 'thank you" when a service person hands me my bag. I get a mumbled "No problem." The last straw was when, after exasperating service from teens, I was checking out. The teen behind the counter finished with me and leaned back against the counter to pick at her nails. I stood there a few more seconds while I put away my wallet and got organized. When I turned to leave, I nearly tumbled over a floor-cleaning machine right behind me. I turned to her and said "That's really not a good place to display that machine. Someone can trip over it." She said: "Oh, someone dropped that off. I was planning to move it." So-o-o, picking her nails was more important than removing the hazard or at least WARNING me that it was right behind me? That was the last straw. In some ways I believe this is still a great store, but it depends upon how much you can stand. I hope they give some guidance to their younger staff, because I would hate to see them lose business. I bet this review gets filtered out. read more
