My Surface 3 wasn't starting and from everything I found online it was unrecoverable so I ordered a new one. I called on Monday and let Michelle know that though my computer wouldn't start, I understood that the hard drive was still good and I needed to transfer the data to the new one. She was very nice and set me up with an appointment for Thursday with a 1 hour arrival window. As a business owner, I understand that because some problems take longer than expected, scheduling service calls isn't an exact science. The most important thing is communication. James ended up running a little late but he handled it perfectly. He called me with 10 minutes left in the window to apologize and let me know he would be a few minutes late, which he was (3 minutes). In my experience, if someone is 3 minutes late they consider that on time and they certainly wouldn't call and give a heads up. As far as the service call goes, not only did he get my new computer set up, he figured out what was wrong with the old one and got it running again. Ending up with 2 working computers never entered my mind as an option. James made sure that he took care of everything I needed and helped me with a few things I didn't know that I needed. It's been a while since I've had a set IT resource so it was very helpful to talk with James about the other services he could help me with in the future. I had James from Nerds in a flash yesterday, James came out and determined my hard drive had issues, when I first called I was quoted $99 for the home visit, however I was charged $299, when I called today and spoke with Michelle she informed me that because my issue was a hard drive they charge $299, I was told that after agreeing to the repair the $99 would be subtracted from the cost, I was not told if it was a hard drive issue the cost was $299, and the standard cost would not be subtracted, Nerds has my computer so I am stuck waiting 3 to 5 days to get it back, Do Not Use This Company they are a rip off read more

My computer after I rebooted wouldn't come on and just ran an error message across the screen. I tried everything I could but I'm not techie. I used Yelp request a quote and three businesses responded. One only does Apple products, One was less expensive but I had to travel and drop off my box, and James from NIAF. I was charge $125 for the diagnostic and they destroyed the mother board upon trying to reinstall windows according to the new technician i brought my pc to fix after this company failed. On top of the $125 the tech wanted to charge $250 to take the computer to diagnose and also another $125 to rush fix it which would be 4 to 5 business days. Computer repair companies aren't that common around here, so I was lucky when these guys were available, and available next day. I did have a problem that stumped James, so he had to take it back to the shop. After working on it many hours, he brought it back 3 days later, completely reimaged and upgraded, problem solved. There were a number of post- reimaging tasks to be performed, and he stayed around to work through them with me. Even coming back when I couldn't find some of the data he'd restored. It is not easy to find a responsive and competent IT company in Austin. Nerds in a Flash were prompt, competent, thorough, and efficient. Before hiring Nerds in a Flash I had wondered if I could find a competent IT professional for my business. I was concerned whether such a company existed based on the experiences of the past two years with two other (reputable-seeming and well-rated) IT companies. These companies messed up basic tasks so badly that they offered a refund without my needing to ask. Here is what that looked like: one company did not back up my computer settings in Outlook before trouble-shooting Outlook. This is basic due diligence- first create no harm. This obviously meant that I had too much at stake to trust them a second time. They offered me a full refund. Another IT company with many good reviews and starting with the letter F was tasked with setting up a new email account for me. In 2019, and for business purposes, this IT company did not set up the account as IMAP. This means that if one emails from their cellphone, it's not synced with Outlook and vice versa. This is obviously very problematic for business emails and it is a basic practice to have IMAP for business purposes in the modern world. I was told I was an 'advanced customer' for caring about IMAP. The company also tried to sweep their error under the rug. The two stories above illustrate concrete examples of Nerds in a Flash's competition. The choice isn't even a choice. I am thrilled to have competent, reliable professionals to help me with my IT needs. Being able to trust them is a HUGE relief. read more

Summary: they may or may not know their stuff, but be very careful as their corporate is extremely greedy. I like to support the local businesses whenever possible, since shutdown policies prop up big corporations, so I went with the nearby Nerds in A Flash. Thinking I could just drop my laptop off and see if it would be even worth trying to repair it, I was told over the phone they can only come to you and wouldn't answer anything until then, but the rather large housecall cost would be deducted from the repair. Long story short, I was told within several minutes my laptop was not really worth saving (I agree it was probably the motherboard) nor could the data be saved. So the company charged me effectively $600/hr to tell me I wasted my time and money. I asked for at least a reduction in the charge since they charged a lot for effectively little work. Their repair rep called their corporate offices and was told a flat no, they don't do any discount even under such circumstances. This is extremely greedy, and I would steer far, far away from them unless you can somehow work something out beforehand so they can investigate whether your kind of laptop can even be fixed or have the data saved before you agree to pay. And I highly doubt a phone rep would do that. read more

On a positive note, James was prompt and polite. On a not so positive note he was unable to figure out my printer issue and proceeded to try to charge the full price for the visit. The issue wasn't even diagnosed. He had to pretty much do all the things I tried prior to reaching out to this company. In fact, he was Googling the issue from my computer.
