Greg at Mr. Computer provided excellent customer service. He repaired my desktop promptly, and for a very fair price. He is extremely knowledgeable. When I picked up the computer, he had attached a hand-written page of notes, of tips of what to do to keep the computer running optimally, and the importance of backing it up regularly. He is very friendly, and the service was done quickly. He even said I could call him when I was cleaning up/removing some old files and he would walk me through the process. I took him up on that, and he spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me making sure I was doing the right things when deleting files, and making other changes. He is a genuinely nice person who likes to help others. He shared that he had worked for one of the big computer companies for years, so he knows his stuff. I was walked through what they would do, but then told, it probably still would result in me taking it to Apple Care. Then the unexpected happened. Step-by-step they told me how to navigate Apple, checked that my computer was under warranty, and then set my expectations on how Apple would fix my computer; and they were right. This is the second time I have worked with Greg. The first time, he helped restore my hard drive on a Dell laptop. I dropped it off at his office, and work was completed in a couple of days. Last night I built a PC for the first time ever (and as most people know, the PC building community & PC experts in general aren't the kindest people), and made a pretty stupid mistake I couldn't figure out. Gave Greg @ Mr. Computer a call, and before I even decided to drive to his location to get it serviced he was extremely patient and tried to take care of the problem with me over the phone for 15 minutes. Never encountered a technician not try to make a quick dollar off of me if they can help it (the previous place I called said to bring in my desktop to take a look for a minimum of $199). Once I arrived, we figured out my rookie mistake in five minutes, and he didn't even let me pay a tip/service fee out of gratitude. I called Greg out of the blue. He told me to come over. My laptop wifi connection wasn't working. He did lots of diagnostics, in addition, loading new security software and updating a bunch of systems. In the end he couldn't help me because my motherboard was bad. (I returned the laptop and got a new one under warranty) But he did all he could do. He was always available. He was pleasant and courteous and patient. He didn't try to sell me a new wifi card because he said I didn't need one. The fee was reasonable. And he even gave me a spare shipping box to send the laptop off. Happened upon Mr.Computer by complete chance but very glad I did. Long story short, I had an issue with my MacBook that, unexplainably, went away by itself. That being said, I called the store before the problem was fixed- Greg answered immediately and spent roughly 20 minutes on the phone with me. I was genuinely just curious about many of the issues I was experiencing and if there were any cheaper options than the quotes I had received from other repair shops. After the call ended, Greg shared some informational videos with me about the stuff I was asking about and genuinely did not seem like someone who was trying to solely get my money. I'm a scientist and design and build some of the electronics we use for our experiments. Last year, a colleague and I set out to change the battery in his MacBook Pro. In modern versions of that laptop, the lithium batteries are glued into the enclosure. We were sure we could replace the battery ourselves. Being a little over-zealous with prying up the battery, we nicked it and it caught on fire. Lots of smoke. Lots of sparks and fire. It destroyed the laptop. The lithium fire wouldn't stop. So, when it came that I needed a new battery in MY laptop, I decided to have a pro do it. Apple takes a few days to do it, and the thought of being without my laptop is similar to a teenager without their phone for days. I contacted Greg, aka Mr. Computer, and we arranged for him to order the battery and we met when he was ready to replace it. The price was reasonable, and it was a pleasure to work with him. I took my MacBook Pro to Mr. Computer after I spilled fizzy water on the keyboard. The service was awesome! They did a full assessment and explained exactly what they did, the issues they found, and what would need to be done. They also talked to me about the price for them to repair vs buying a new one (from which they wouldn't benefit in any way) and told me I was approaching the point at which they tend to urge people to consider buying a new or newish-computer. When I made the decision to do buy new, they offered to transfer everything from my old hard drive to the new one. All of this work cost much less than I expected. On top of providing excellent service and have obvious expertise, they were all about helping me to make the best decision for me. Our Brother MFC-L2700DW printer died recently and we were unable to turn it back on. We tried everything we could think of, pressing the on/off button repeatedly, pressing it around the edges, holding it in for a while, but nothing worked. We called around trying to find a Brother service center nearby, but there was none. Finally we did a yahoo search for "printer repair austin" and found Mr. Computer. We called them and we explained to Greg what was going on. This conversation took several minutes of his valuable time. He texted us back some things to try. The very first procedure worked! Holding the button before plugging the power cable back in woke it up from a deep sleep state. I took my PC to Mr. Computer for repair a few weeks back. They had scaled back their operations due to the shutdown, but Greg agreed to take a look at it and see what he could do. It had started shutting down after just a few minutes of operation. The issue was difficult to diagnose and isolate. Greg stayed in contact with me throughout the process, asking what behaviors I noticed before the problem came up, and explaining what steps he was taking to fix it. It seemed to be an issue with my trackpad - I would lose control of the cursor and often the windows would randomly shift and freeze in between two open windows. Wow, I'm so glad I found this place! I have a desktop pc I use for animation, and in the middle of a job, it shut down! Mr. Computer to the rescue! I don't much about computer hardware, but Greg was able to explain to me what was going on with relatable allegories (ie: your heatsink is like the radiator on your car!). He fixed my problem by diligently checking my machine, cleaning it, removing unneeded cached files, fiddling with the hardware and updating important systems like the BIOS. What a relief!
