If you want to get a feel for a school, pay attention to the students. In each class, the students were participating and clearly excited to be there. In reading some of the negative comments below, I have to say that I got a very different impression. A school environment should make students feel respected and heard, but that hasn't been my experience here. Situations that needed understanding and communication were handled in a way that felt dismissive and overly harsh. I hope the school seriously reflects on how students are treated and works to create a more supportive environment in the future.

I ate many a cupcake to celebrate my classmates' birthdays, crossed the Charlie Brown painted bridge that kept students from walking in the street to reach the ice cream truck, giggled with my friends during the Sex Ed lesson that presented me with my first maxi pad and deodorant stick, and got pummeled by hugs from my cheering female classmates after beating the most athletic boy in our class at a handball tournament. So basically, I had the typical generally wholesome educational experience you would hope your child receive in elementary school. To its credit, Tarzana Elementary had some of the most dedicated, genial and most effective teachers I have ever known. They were confidence boosters, taught values as well as math and handwriting and worked very hard to make learning fun and engaging. I stayed after school until my mom could pick me up and during that time there were always adults to facilitate a game of kickball or baseball and make sure nobody got hurt. An older boy decided to bully me after I first transfered and when my parents complained to the school he was immediately disciplined and still couldn't look me in the eye when our paths crossed many years later. That first experience was pretty telling about the involvement the people running and working in this school chose to have in the lives of their students and the environment they were trying to foster. I am happy to say at least with this little girl, the efforts had a lasting impact.

I felt like it was a privilege my kids got to be at such a great school with teachers who genuinely give their all and love the kids. They are all wonderful, with some of them being so magical they feel like something out of a storybook. My older child had been in an accredited Montessori school prior to Discovery, and he ended up being very behind academically. Not only did his teachers from Team 3 (pre-k) and TK flag the issue early on, they also put in extra time to try and help get him caught up. This was their personal time they gave him when they could have gone home or probably enjoyed a slightly longer break. My kids learn SO much here and they have fun doing it. It's play based, but the kids learn and love to learn. The enrichments that they offer and are included in the program, mostly funded through the DSPA, are second to none. And the community at the school is fantastic. The more you take part in school functions and volunteer, the more you'll feel the community. Leaving the school is so hard, not just for us, but for lots of families, because it's just the best. Most families go on to "top tier" private schools, and some do public schools, but I would say the public school families are a much smaller portion of the school. We never felt like anybody judged our choices one way or another. Eyde runs the school, and keeps it running like a well-oiled machine. She always listens to parents when they come to her and treats everybody with warmth and kindness. She also is there to help guide you if you want to go the private school route, so you end up at the school that is right for you. She's incredibly knowledgeable in this department. And last but not least, the campus. It's huge! A friend of mine referred to it as feeling like something out of Willy Wonka. They have slides, monkey bars, play structures, swings, a meditation yurt (it sounded ridiculous to me when I first saw it, but my son did come home and meditate so judge for yourself), a petting zoo (If I remember correctly there are miniature ponies, a pig, birds, and tourtises) etc... There is so much room for them to run and play, and they never get bored of it. There was never a day that went by where I worried about my children's safety, whether or not they were learning, or if they were having fun. My kids were full-time students and stayed for extended care. They spent almost as much time with my kids as I do, and I'm glad my kids got to spend that time with them. We drove almost 30 minutes each way to take our kids to go to Discovery, and I would do it all over again. If you're lucky enough to snag a spot at the school, take it. It's worth every penny!

It is a safe, warm, and beautifully diverse community. I toured every private school before deciding on LILA. We were blown away by the academics, safe environment, focus on culture and art, and French immersion for a fraction of a private school like Brentwood for example. The teachers are hands on and the class sizes are small (around 10-15 students per class). Our daughter is now completely fluent in French even though we are a predominantly English speaking home. I cannot recommend LILA enough.

One day he told me that one kid had aggressively thrown a bag of peanut m&m's directly at him and yelled "BOMB!". And the staff did nothing to help. We've got two kids here one going into 5th and there are no bad teachers. Ms. Simons is incredible (LAUSD teacher of the year for a reason!!) Ms. Argote and Ms. P and 10 other teachers are all stand outs. (My other daughter is super ADHD and has thrived here, she graduated her IEP and is crushing her state testing in a way i never dreamed she could. I couldn't say more good things about everyone here. Very loving and capable.
