Substance abuse, etc. The programs for students with good grades are amazing, though. I took coding, it's a good class, and I've learned a lot. Also there are field trips for some electives, and they are pretty high effort, like the airport one. That was pretty epic honestly, I got to move control surfaces on a T-6 Texan, it was great. I recommend this school honestly. The school is goofy in some ways but if you try to keep your grades up and actually try, you'll be fine. Some goofy events happen sometimes, like the umbrella in the mud, and other funny things going down, but it adds character to the school. These goofy events don't happen much, but they make this school much more fun to be a part of. Epic stuff honestly.

Mr.Doctor teaches history and he is very knowledgeable and helps his students succeed. My issues with the school started in 11th grade in the middle of the year before the pandemic. I was not permitted to join the dance company despite having a rudamentary knowledge of hip hop. This crushed me since I entered in the school specifically to the performing magnet arts program and that did not work out. There was an insane amount of discrimination and bullying going on behind closed doors and when it was brought to the staff's attention more specifically Mrs.Arana she did nothing about it. I experienced the worst cyberbullying and bullying from the kids while it attendance to this school that I'm now 23 years old and I still recall stuff that went on. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Do not send your kid here. I would recieve an endless amount of death threats, abelist comments on my former youtube channel, and a lot of people were targetting me because of my religion so I feel discriminated against. Making fun of my religion and sending me death threats is not the way anybody should spend their high school years. I know high school is bad but it does not have to be that bad if you choose the correct school. The students are insanely historically not informed and some of the comments they made towards me behind closed doors are disgusting, nobody should ever be spoken to the way that I was. In response to telling Miss Arana that I was being targeted for being Jewish, she said "there are conflicts in the middle East." NO! We are in Los Angeles and this is her school and this is what people are writing to me here and now, so I felt like she could have done more to take care of it. But since my kid liked the performing arts magnet and was also interested in the machinist program we gave it a try and I am glad we did. My kid loves Van Nuys High School. The teachers are nice, patient, and very attentive to talk to parents about any issues or if they need help. The students at this school are a diverse group from different areas not just from the valley and this is something that I liked. When we were considering high schools for our son we looked all over the valley and this was the best fit for him. My wife and I really were sold when we went on a tour of the campus and got to speak to current students. They are so talented! It blew our minds how many cool things they are doing and how smart they are, we left beyond impressed. The three magnets are great too, Medical Magnet, STEAM Magnet, and the Performing Arts Magnet. Of course all schools have their pros and cons. We are excited to see how much our son loves to learn and attend school. He even tries to go to school when he is sick, that is how much he loves Van Nuys High School and his teachers. Honestly we have only scratched the surface because this school is one of top LAUSD AP passing schools, they have awards for Auto Skills, Machinist, and Film programs, their newspaper has won awards called the Mirror (also available online), not to mention the musicals, dance groups, choirs, and various musicians are wildly talented. We went to see the musical Mamma Mia and WOW it was AMAZING!!!!! Van Nuys High School might just be one of the best high schools in Los Angeles and the most underrated in the valley. It truly is a diamond in the rough. My wife and I are so excited to see our son continue to flourish, specially because starting in the 2025-2026 school year they will implement the block schedule and the students will have even more opportunities to learn and explore other subjects and programs. No, I'm not rich but education should be for all. It shouldn't be because you don't have millions of dollars that your child cannot be accepted. The school is a great I believe learning foundation for the children. Everyone seems to grow in prosper at the school and that's one of the reasons why I wanted my children to attend such a lovely prestigious school like Ciara, but I'm going to tell you if you are not rich, they will not accept your children. This favoritism and lack of accountability raise real safety concerns. My children have noticed it too, and that should never happen. Now, my child has a teacher who lacks a clear credential, has no real teaching experience, and practically never responds to messages. This teacher is constantly putting down their students and picks on several students in particular even though they are all very young. The homework the teacher gives often makes no sense (one assignment involved drawing a picture of the main character of a story, even though the "story" had no characters!) and is basically unrelated to anything they learn in class (if they are learning anything). The teacher constantly puts on videos with very little (if any) educational value for the children as if kids nowadays don't get enough screen time outside of school! My child has told me that they learned more in one day last year than they have in the entire first semester with this new teacher. My partner and I went to talk with the principal, Ms. Cuellar, about our issues. Ms. Cuellar got very defensive and denied that the teacher would ever get angry with their students or that the teacher has basically no teaching experience (even though they were just an aide in the school the year before this one!). The principal then told us that, even though they have low enrollment, she would be happy to give us a list of other schools in the area where we can send our child! When we asked to transfer our child into another class, the principal informed us that they did have a space in the class, but that she didn't know if it was possible to make the transfer. After waiting a week, I contacted the principal (since she had not gotten back to me) and was told that it was "not possible" to transfer our child. Needless to say, my partner, my child and I are very upset about all of this.
