Never in my life have I come across this much incompetence in one place.
I first went here with my 5 year old son back in January so we could start an evaluation for ADHD. He's currently in preschool with services (therapy, 12-1-1 classroom) after being evaluated by our school district/Just Kids when he was 4 but in order to continue those services in kindergarten, we were told he needs an official diagnosis. They recommended bringing him to a pediatric neurologist. Sooo, that why I first stumbled upon this horrible, disorganized laughable excuse for a group of "neurology associates."
The first appointment went well. Dr. Louis Manganas was very nice and he was clearly listening to me (unlike everyone else). He also paid close attention to my son's behavior and said he could see why we were seeking a diagnosis. He informed me about the process: he gave me two Vanderbilt forms for my son's father and me and one for his teacher. He told me to fax them all over when they were filled out. Then, I made an appointment with the nurse practitioner THREE months in advance before we left.
Three months came and went. I arrived with my son ten minutes early for his appointment. The lady looked confused as she sat on her computer for five minutes looking for my son's name. She then asked her other office friend for help, who then also looked confused at her screen. Ten minutes later-with my son getting fidgety, they announced we never booked an appointment. By then, I was agitated too. I gave them the appointment card I had saved all those months and said I did book an appointment. I was told to wait. 15 minutes later, they concluded that the "real" 3:30 appointment didn't show up (um, sure) and that my son could be seen. I was NEVER given an apology for their mix up.
We get to the nurse practitioner: DENISE WAHRHEIT. I tell her why we're there. My son is bouncing off the walls and making noises while I try to talk. She looks in my son's "report" for the faxed Vanderbilt forms from my ex husband, me and his teacher. I had confirmed those were received with the office staff months ago. Nope. They're not there. Now, I'm getting pissed.
She tells me all she can do is give us the forms again and have us fax them again. I tell her my son's CSE meeting is in ten days and the reason I started this process three months ago was so we'd get a diagnosis in time. She has a very nonchalant and unapologetic attitude. She then mentions "well, you were a walk in." Then she mentions she could prescribe my son a low dose of Adderall to see how he takes it. I told her I just need a diagnosis right now and will worry about medication in the next year or two if his behavior still hasn't improved with therapy alone.
Fast forward three days, my son's SUBSTITUTE teacher (his usual teacher is out on medical leave) faxes over the new Vanderbilt form. I send my form (Denise only gave me one, not a second for his father) as well. I call to confirm. They don't have the teacher's form but my form is now in Denise's folder according to the office lady. I get in contact with his teacher and tell her to fax it again. I call the office back, nope-no sign of the fax. I finally get in touch with Denise's secretary Rita. She gives me another fax number. I call my son's teacher again, get it faxed to the new fax number. I resend mine. I asked Rita to call and confirm she received them. No call.
My ex husband, however, gets a call. Apparently, our son doesn't meet the criteria for ADHD. Our son. The little boy whose eyes glaze over when you talk to him. The little boy who dances in his seat during dinner and class. The little boy who has a father with ADHD and other blood related family members with ADHD. Denise also told my ex that she doesn't recommend medication. The same lady said differently just three days ago.
I call Denise to get to the bottom of this. She didn't evaluate my son personally. She saw him for two minutes and said maybe one sentence to him. I don't even know if my son's substitute teacher filled out the form or if she sent the old copy from his teacher out on leave. The substitute teacher wouldn't know my son as well. I get in touch with Rita, finally. Denise isn't available because she has "1 million appointments". Rita then talks to me about it. Seriously? You can't talk to your patients directly?
Rita says that Denise says that we should try Just Kids agency for a ODD evaluation. I told her well, if Denise had known anything about my son she'd know that he'd already been thoroughly evaluated by that agency and that's why he has services now. I then asked what teacher filled out the form. She said she'd ask Denise and get back to me.
It's been hours. Haven't heard a word.
Obviously, we're not important to the practice or they would have apologized for their numerous mistakes. This "evaluation" was not an evaluation at all and the diagnosis is definitely wrong. Now my son can't get services. Way to go SB! read more
