Oh come on guys!!!! Amazing coffee for 99p, free wifi, chilled out music, roaring fire and trendy chic looking patrons (why do i like girls in thick rimmed glasses?). Many bars just don't know how to 'do' the day time crowd when not in a 'it's 12pm... beer o'clock! kinda area. The Belle though, knows what it's doing. This place has the perfect vibe for a coffee house and pretty much pulls it off without even really trying. In fact, if you hid the bar in this joint it would pretty much look, feel and smell (smell? really? shut up inner voice...) like a coffee joint. I really like The Belle, actually - it's definitely a pub I forget about, but this week it was the perfect spot for me to get some work done over a pot of tea. It's a cosy pub on Great Western Road with an awesome fireplace - it's worth a visit for that alone. I popped in on a Monday afternoon as I needed to get some work done and Papercup was just too busy. Thankfully, The Belle was nice and quiet, and I was able have my pot of tea and work away. They apparently have free wifi which I didn't try on this occasion (I mostly just tether from my own phone), the staff are friendly and the music was perfectly fine. I'd rate this is a pretty decent working spot so I'm sure I'll be back soon! read more

Sometimes I really don't like to go to a coffee shop to get some reading in because I'm a people watcher and the hustle and bustle distracts me. However, finding a welcoming pub for daytime reading and nice coffee can be a challenge. On Great Western Road, The Belle hits the mark for me. A beautiful crackling real coal fire, warm decorations, loads of space and friendly staff make it such a comfortable place to get some alone time in without being a hermit! I have to say, this is one of my favourite places in the West End. The interior decor is strange but not too strange, the selection of draft drinks is pretty damned good - Deuchars, Brooklyn Lager and Anchor Steam Ale? Yes please! There are some tables outside for that 48 hours of the year that passes for the Scottish summer, plenty of comfy seats inside and even a couple of deer mounted on the wall. Staff are always pleasant and helpful, the place is just nice. Sometimes, that's all you need. It's hard to describe, there's just a nice comfortable feeling about the place, one that makes you want to return time and time again. Go check it out, it's worth it! read more

The Belle is a petite and pretty pub on Great Western Road that has been a very classy but kicked back addition to the neighbourhood. Selling a large selection of booze (including Addelstones and internationally brewed beers), you can sip on some delicious beverages in the nicest of surroundings. With its twinkly lights, comfy seats and maroon decor, it's a cosy place to get a pint by the roaring fire during the dingy winter nights. It also makes a great venue for a first date, since the 80s goth punk music is usually humming low in the background. The Belle is best enjoyed in the best of company, which I am always fortunate to have when I visit here. I've huddled around a table with friends many a time, but had a great night last night for the first Glasgow Yelp meet up! We sipped on some drinks and had a rare old time getting to know each other outwith the confines of the internet. We also got treated to some jobby stories from the locals, oh joy! Only in Glasgow! You might not be so lucky as we were to learn about Bob the Jobby, but even if you don't meet some characters this is a jolly good place to drink some unusual beers and chat the night away. read more

Those unfortunate enough ever to have sauntered past the old Western Bar on a Sunday night would quite happily have taken a can of petrol and a box of matches to it if it meant no more aural assaults. Warbling versions of Sweet Caroline, Man, I Feel Like A Woman and I'm Still Standing were particular specialities if I recall correctly. Thankfully, the chronic karaoke night, and every other night of the week for that matter, has been replaced in a far more humane way in the shape of cosy (relatively) new bar, the Belle. Like many of the pubs in Great Western Road, the transformation has been quite astonishing. As well as homely decor including a roaring fire, the lighting is now warm and welcoming, the music is varied and the choice of drink is vast and, for the West End at least, reasonably priced. Hell, you can even order a coffee without fear of a life-time ban. The downside is that word has spread quickly and come the weekend the Belle can stuggle to seat the increasing numbers via for a spot for the night. Changed days indeed. When once upon a time the Captain's Rest, Liquid Ship and Western represented a stretch of bars to be avoided, the trio are now unquestiobaly among the best in the west. read more

A surprisingly busy pub for a Thursday night at 9:30pm on Great Western Road! Rocco, Chris and I went in here tonight, shortly followed by Santino and other Rocco from Smile Cafe, for a few drinks after the Yelp event, and I had absolutely no idea that it was going to be as busy as it was. Wow. We couldn't get a table! We stood with drinks for a bit before eventually someone left and we scuttled over to the table to steal it. The staff in here seem pleasant enough, although our clean glasses that Rocco brought over for our pints were taken away before we'd used them by a waitress who thought they were empty. Easy mistake, but she could've asked! The beer was absolutely great; good German beer and good San Franciscan beer, both of which's names I can't remember! (might've been a wee tad drunk) (might still be a wee tad drunk) The company I had was great (what can you expect from our wonderful CM), and I had a lovely time in here. Good pub, if a bit small, good bar stockage, good staff, good drunken time. Hooray! read more

Have been on the hunt for a local in the West end and this place certainly wins the prize! None of your Uber Chic West end nonsense here. Have past this place many, many times and missed this little oasis. With roaring fire its more like a snug. The atmosphere about the place wouldn't be out of place in some highland hideaway as opposed to Great Western Road. From now on I'll be seeing rather alot of this place... A Pint anyone? read more

Gutted that we found this place just before moving away from Glasgow. A hidden gem. It looks a bit like an old mans pub but has a trendy feel. They serve some great beer on draught (love a Sam Adams) and good quality gin. There's even a fire in the middle for cold nights. read more

Without the patrons this place would be five stars. It has some very nice beers. Brooklyn Lager and Anchor Steam on tap. Those are the stunners but there are some other lovely beer pipes along the bar. But then we have to deal with the people surrounding you. I can only think the word "entitlement" comes to mind. People dressed in expensive drab clothing discussing their poverty. "I identify with the South American Embroiders who were killed for this scarf and that is why I wear it every day, except when I wear the other one." I doubt I was ever like this since i was usually too poor to pay 4 quid a pint. But if I was, I apologise. The Wacky Oldsters in the funny toques have no goddamn excuse. Well, you know what I mean :-/ But The Belle is fantastically petite and joyously so! This small delight is said to be LGBT friendly. Well, if it is it's not overly so. A typical Fridays night will be throbbing with all persuasions effortlessly having a good time at the expense of the excellent bar selection. Easily one of the best bars in Glasgow. Managed to coin it as 'the local' with a few pals of mine which is exteremly satisfying to say that to someone and meet them there without ever uttering the bar's name! Situated on a cozy wee corner of Great Western Road, The Belle offers you something he majority of pubs don't, a cracking atmosphere and some very nice beers indeed. Littered with some beautiful touches (see the roasting coal fire, or scarf dwelling deer heads) this pub is perfect on a cold night to keep your extremities toasty! Bit peckish when enjoying your pint? The Belle offer loose nuts from salted peanuts to unshelled pistachios to keep your belly happy. Some very nice bottled beer as well. Having spent some time working in New York, I am firmly satisfied with the bottles of Brooklyn they have in the fridges but my pals often enjoy more of the European lagers they have in stock. The Belle can get quite busy so dont put all your eggs in one basket - sometimes you need to be prepared not to get a seat. Perfect on a sunday / monday night if you want a quiet drink by yourself or some good conversation with a good friend. One of my favorite wee places, treat her well! read more

Being an employee of Glasgow University there are many ways to go on a Friday night after work (with straight home never really a serious consideration). Eastwards to the likes of the Doublet and Uisge Beatha? West into the belly of high-end bohemia on Ashton lane? South to the old familiar of Partick and the Three Judges? For whatever reason I've rarely ventured north, to Great Western Road, despite having an on-off love affair with pubs like the Captains Rest. The Belle, a recent discovery after a long period of contemplative humming and hawing is likely to change that. There's not much to say about it really - it's quite small, quite hip, but absolutely welcoming. There is, at least in my experience, a pleasure unique in Glasgow of both Brooklyn Lager and (my favourite) Anchor Steam both on tap. There are frequently dogs to pat and try to coax over, as you desperately attempt to prove to the world that you're some kind of doctor doolittle (they always ignore you though - they're the most cool-for-school regulars). Little if anything exists from its former incarnation as the Western Bar (where I once sang a particularly non-faithful version of I Wanna Know What Love Is), so don't look to it as a reference point. Just imagine a New York-ish hipster bar and add a smile and a welcome, and you're just about there. read more

With confidence, I can declare The Belle is one of my new favourite spots in Glasgow to chill out and enjoy drinks with friends. Funnily enough, a few of my mates live directly across from it, but for some reason it always seemed to be an old man's pub (which it used to be!) and never ventured in... but boy was I wrong! The Belle was the spot for our first Glasgow Yelp meetup. A big shout out to all the cool Yelpers I got to meet last night: the rockin' Glasgow Yelp fivesome and friends! It was a Wednesday evening, and it was surprisingly busy. We gathered in the corner of the wee pub while we got to know each other better in person and so on. The Belle is a fantastic wee pub along Great Western Road. The interior is cosy and the atmosphere pretty laidback and fun. With muted cool tones, homely touches and scattered fairy lights, it exudes anything but pretentiousness. As the evening went on, drinks kept flowing, stories were shared, ridiculous card tricks showcased, and the pub was bustling. Sam Smith pints are a steal at £2, but be prepared to shell out £4 for a pint of Brooklyn. It was an awesome night in The Belle, and I hope this isn't just a one-off because of the great company. With that, I leave you with three little words: "Bob the jobbie" Fun fact: Look for the resident pups that inhabit the Belle... they're quite well-mannered who like to wander around and social when they're not chillin' in their little crash pad behind the bar. Great pub, The Belle. I was last here on a Saturday night, and although it was packed, we were served immediately. The staff are generally great - just friendly and down to earth, and really informed if you want to chat about fancy beer. They have some good beer here too. Strong beer. They sell a beer with the best name ever - Corsendonk. I can't remember what percentage it is, but it is strong! Delicious too. Last time, I had a Kraken rum, just straight with a chunk of lime, and ice. Lovely way to round off a night out. The Belle has everything you want from a bar really - nice staff, decent punters, a good range of drinks, and a really laid back vibe. read more

I love this place!!! Although it seems to have grown in popularity and tends to get quite busy now, it's a great place to go for a relaxed drink in cosy surroundings. Mid-week theres a good atmosphere and at weekends its more bustling. The place can be dead during the day but they sell decent coffee for 99p and it's a great place to meet a friend or sit with your book. Formally known as The Western (an infamous 'old man's pub') this bar has reinvented itself as The Belle. Now, the dark wooden bar and window surrounds create a homely, welcoming yet stylish setting. This has been added to by the real coal fire, set on a stone wall, which burns throughout winter with mounted dear heads above it on either side. This eclectic style has been mastered through the use of glass tiles in one section and the collection of retro mirrors, posters and paintings skilfully dotted around the walls. Meanwhile, the mellow music is as eclectic as the décor and ranges from blues to Bob Marley. All this ensures that the smallness of this eleven-table bar is not claustrophobic in any way but cosy and comfortable. Additionally, despite, the size of this bar it undoubtedly has a great range of drinks available. For instance, though the wine selection consists of around six choices they are reasonably priced and reflect a surprisingly good range of tastes and locations. Similarly, you'll find Krusowice, Amstel, Leffe and Addlestones as well as the usual selection of beers and cider on tap. The friendly and helpful staff also know how to make a proper Bloody Mary - using real ingredients (not pre-bottled 'Big Tom' juice) including a finishing touch of red wine. Meanwhile, there is a modest non-alcoholic menu of coffees, hot chocolates and bar snacks with a twist. While peanuts are the first on their bar menu, pistachios, almonds and olives are also served all for £1.50 as well as tunnocks for a mere 50p. Other good points include an outside smoking area (with overhead shelter for rainy Glasgow days); clean toilets and good, quick bar service. read more

Great wee pub. They have Anchor Steam and Brooklyn Beer on tap (which are both fairly unusual), the music selection is varied and the bar staff are friendly. As others have mentioned this place used to be an pretty different affair. It wasn't bad but it's better now. This is relevant because the gantry and decor mostly remain leaving a decent atmosphere. It looks out onto Great Western Road so if you get a seat at the window it's good for people watching. They even have a wee outside seated area if you're a smoker. read more

This pub is a great spot to enjoy drinks next to the fire with a mixed crowd. I went in during the week with a friend and we were able to enjoy conversation and drinks without having to shout over horrid music. Sometimes you just want a pub without all the noise and clatter. Belle is your place for a quieter evening, all the while sitting in a cosy drawing room sort of pub and getting your chats on. I love the Belle, it's a super cosy pub that sells reasonably priced Prosecco by the glass. It is also one of the the only pubs I know of in Glasgow that sells Anchor Steam beer on draught. It is dog friendly and has a fire which helps to add to the warm and relaxed atmosphere. read more

Charming! We popped in here to see what the food menu was like on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and even though I fancied none of it, we had a pint and were thoroughly relaxed in the surroundings. Great bar with a good clean & quirkyly decorated interior. The currently hip Anchor Steam & Brooklyn Lager on tap as well as the likes of Modelo etc. available in the fridge + all your spirit needs catered for and the usal pints of lager etc. also available. This is a good 'proper' bar. No gimmicks just good beer and a good crowd. Busy most nights making for a good atmosphere not dominated by sport on TV's, gambling machines or karaoke. Pints are getting up there in price but not enough to put me off. read more

This was my favourite pub in the west end but lately I wonder if it's a victim of its success. Last time I was in some of the bar staff were a bit rude. I still had some drink in my glass and the girl came over to the table and tried to take it out of my hand. When I explained I was still finishing she gazed at me and said 'Really?....Wow!' and walked off. Was that necessary? Me and friends are regulars in the Belle but maybe we'll start going to Sparklehorse instead. The Belle obviously doesn't need the custom. read more

This is a great local pub. My family used to own The Western which is now The Belle this was in the late 70s and early 80s sold up 85. Then we had BBC celebs, actors,local punters and students as customers it was great,good atmosphere with new Beers etc Stella on draught, Furstenberg on draught, Fosters. It was bought over and eventually before Remo took it over it was looking like a dump with all sorts of punters in it . Now its one of the best bars in the West End good beers Amstel, Brooklyn Lager etc and back to a great ambiance as Mickey Flannagan would say. With the windows looking out to Great western Road you can have a drink and watch the world go by. I pop in now and again when up in the West End and enjoy a good pint in a friendly pub and when i pass in the car its always busy in the evening which is a good sign.Its a little bit pricey however this keeps the local twats out which is always good. All in all a great local has been saved and turned into a cosy friendly pub well worth a visit if in Glasgow or you live locally. read more
