Inside The Belle. Oh deer. DEER!!! :)

I have to say, this is one of my favourite places in the West End. The interior decor is strange but not too strange, the selection of draft drinks is pretty damned good - Deuchars, Brooklyn Lager and Anchor Steam Ale? Yes please! There are some tables outside for that 48 hours of the year that passes for the Scottish summer, plenty of comfy seats inside and even a couple of deer mounted on the wall. Staff are always pleasant and helpful, the place is just nice. Sometimes, that's all you need. It's hard to describe, there's just a nice comfortable feeling about the place, one that makes you want to return time and time again. Go check it out, it's worth it!

The Belle is a petite and pretty pub on Great Western Road that has been a very classy but kicked back addition to the neighbourhood. Selling a large selection of booze (including Addelstones and internationally brewed beers), you can sip on some delicious beverages in the nicest of surroundings. With its twinkly lights, comfy seats and maroon decor, it's a cosy place to get a pint by the roaring fire during the dingy winter nights. It also makes a great venue for a first date, since the 80s goth punk music is usually humming low in the background. The Belle is best enjoyed in the best of company, which I am always fortunate to have when I visit here. I've huddled around a table with friends many a time, but had a great night last night for the first Glasgow Yelp meet up! We sipped on some drinks and had a rare old time getting to know each other outwith the confines of the internet. We also got treated to some jobby stories from the locals, oh joy! Only in Glasgow! You might not be so lucky as we were to learn about Bob the Jobby, but even if you don't meet some characters this is a jolly good place to drink some unusual beers and chat the night away.

A seemingly quiet bar on GWR, one can enjoy a beverage (or several) here. Mostly filled with students and knowledgable types, it's a brilliant place to just sit and be, or to meet friends. Also, because it's small and cosy, it can be perfect for hiding away with a book. It's a nice wee pub. I'm sure one of the other reviewers mentioned it but at 99p a coffee, you can't knock it.

There's a few reasons for that, and while I'm sure there's just something to the atmosphere that's impossible to quantify, these are the things that I think give it at least part of its charm. 1. The whisky. They have a huge selection and they're easily the best place to come for whisky in Finnieston, although most of the bars around here have a few bottles on offer. They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Not in a cramped way but in a cosy way. You can sometimes struggle for a table but it's the kind of place where you feel OK about sharing tables with strangers. The regulars are friendly and are happy for you to pull up a chair 3. When there's music it's fiddles, usually being played by those friendly regulars. I saw an accordion there once but usually it's fiddles being played and being played well - they tend to get involved with the Celtic Connections music festival. 4. It's dog friendly. There's usually one or two dogs running around and the staff are happy to provide a bowl of water for them. So there you have it. Finnieston might be getting awfully fashionable but if that's not your scene it still has one of the least hipster-ish, most traditional whisky pubs in Glasgow and it's a pub that's well worth checking out.

The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.

If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

I was looking for a good stout and the bartender, Andrew gave me some really good recommendations. I settled on the Overtone Milk that he recommended and it did not disappoint. It was smooth, full bodied, and flavorful. Nice chocolate flavor with a hint of smokiness to it. My husband got the Drygate IPA and it was crisp and hoppy. Service: I always look for good conversation, attentiveness, kindness, and whether or not the server and or bartender was knowledgeable about what they're serving. Our bartender Andrew was all of the above. He was so welcoming, and my husband and I enjoyed the great conversation With him. He knew a lot about the selection of beers and whiskey, where it came from, and who it came from, so that was wonderful! Thank you Andrew for a great experience.
