A few weeks ago, I was shopping in the southern part of Rochester. Kohl's and Five Below are my usual places. As I parked to visit the latter, I noticed New China. It intrigued me. Having Chinese food in Rochester is still foreign to me. I didn't order any when I was a resident. It's funny how I now have an interest returning as a visitor. I looked at the reviews and they were decent on Yelp. I decided to check out their online menu. One thing led to another. I ended up placing an order for pickup on New China's site. You don't pay through it, but you are prompted to create an account and specify your phone number. You order takes roughly 25 minutes to complete, which was more than enough time for me to shop at Five Below before picking up my order. Their food caters to both Americans who may feel intimidated by Chinese food and, surprisingly, to Chinese folks who want authentic food. My pain point was seeing cream cheese rangoons (wontons) on the menu. First, I can't see my ancestors taking out a rectangle of Philadelphia cream cheese to replace the traditional pork filling in wontons. Second, I find it gross seeing them on a Chinese eatery menu that I will not touch them if they were the last food item available on this planet. My rant is over. The menu item that gave me a glimmer of hope for some authentic Chinese cuisine was the shrimp with lobster sauce. I went for it. I drove over to the eatery after I was done shopping and parked steps away from it. The restaurant is next to a radio station blasting country music. There are stairs and a ramp for those who require accessibility help. You can dine in. I saw a couple eating when I walked in. Dining spaces looked limited. I was immediately greeted by a woman. There were four women in the kitchen literally cooking up a storm. I said my name and she found my order that was already packed. I asked if this place accepted credit cards. Yep, every credit card imaginable is accepted here. I paid and all was great. She handed me my food. I thanked her. She wasn't the friendliest. Come to think of it, they were probably more focused on cooking the food than being friendly. They were highly efficient, though. I drove an hour back to Eagan. My food was still hot when I got back to my hotel room. I was impressed. I got the following items: - Steamed dumplings with garlic soy sauce - Shrimp with lobster sauce on roasted pork fried rice - House special lo mein with roasted pork fried rice Each meal came with an egg roll. Everything was packed carefully. The egg rolls were yummy. They were crispy and packed full of filling. They were perfect. The steamed dumplings were authentic and delicious. They didn't have any fancy crimping. Each filling was packed full of flavourful pork filling. The garlic soy sauce worked well. I had roughly half of the two meals for dinner. Perhaps less than half because I ate all the dumplings. The shrimp with lobster sauce was so comforting. It reminded me of a Hong Kong-style dish where you know there's fried rice, but you can't see it because it's drenched in flavourful lobster sauce. The shrimp were perfectly done. I love barbequed pork in fried rice and it was fabulous. I liked the cubed carrots and pork, peas, onions, and more. I would get this dish again. It was delicious. The house lo mein was a winner. It had chicken, shrimp, barbequed pork, and veggies. The noodles were true lo mein ones. It was different having the lo mein paired with fried rice, but I didn't mind. It was such a carb-heavy, yummy meal. I had leftovers for lunch the following day. It was perfect staying in my hotel room working remotely and not having to think about what to get for lunch. The leftovers were equally as yummy a day later. It was a pleasant surprise taking a chance on New China and discovering that it offers authentic Chinese food. Just avoid the cream cheese appetizers. I'd return for more when I'm back in my old neighbourhood. (26) read more

This is the best Chinese IMO in Rochester. I've been to pretty much every single one and this one is the most consistent with flavors and quality of their food. Their staff is so friendly and my boyfriend and I order from them often. If you are craving some Chinese I'd highly recommend. read more

The tables were dirty when we went in and asked them to clean one. We ordered two orders of chicken chow mein. When we received our food- in sixty years of eating chow mein - my wife nor I have received the stir fry vegetables and rice. My wife inquired about the food we received and the employee said she had asked me if that is what I wanted in which I replied yes I ordered chicken chow mein. No offer was made to correct or change our food. We will never return to this restaurant. read more

I have to give this place a big shout out. Excellent prices, excellent food and huge portions. Eat in or take out is served on styrofoam which I was expecting. I have eaten in many food courts so had my preconceived ideas. I ordered the generals chicken with plain rice and an extra side of rice. I also had the smaller lunch size. I never needed the extra side because it was the size of its own plate!! We also got shrimp lomein and beef and broccoli which were also great. read more

I will start of by saying this is "fast food" and they are not a place if you're looking for a good sit down atmosphere, the decor/ layout really reminded me of an old taco John's. with that in mind, the staff was very friendly and willing to explain dishes, the food was prepared to order and very fast, it was cheap and healthy portion sizes and I was very satisfied with the flavor of my dishes. This is our favorite Chinese place in Rochester, although the selection in town is pretty pitiful. Our go-to order is sesame chicken and/or General's chicken with crab ragoons. The egg rolls are pretty decent as well. They do not offer delivery, which many places in Rochester don't, so that hinders us from ordering food from them because we live so far away in the city. They do work with the Waiter Express group, so that is one option for you if you do want delivery, but expect to pay for it! The inside of the restaurant is very small, with just a few tables should you choose to dine in. The cleanliness of the place leaves something to be desired. But we've never had an issue with our food and its always hot and delicious. read more

Staff is very friendly, been here 3 times and will be back. Really good take out ! I had the shrimp lo mein w pork fried rice , My husband had chicken chow mein w pork fried rice. I've been there 3 times now, and I've gotta say really good General Tso chicken, not very good orange chicken. Pretty standard prices, but they accept cards which is unusual for take-out based places in Rochester. Don't bother with the fountain drinks, I believe the calibration is off on them and they're too syrupy. But their rice and chicken is good, and it's a very good size portion. I also definitely prefer the packaging (a clear lid and foam bottom) to an entire styrofoam box. It's also one of the only places farther South in Rochester, so if you're in that area give it a try! read more

Ordered Mongolian beef and got Mongolian onions and shallots, maybe had 2 pieces of beef in it.... Also ordered the shrimp fried rice... 4 shrimp in a large order of shrimp fried rice is ridiculous. Overall rating is a 3 to a 3.5. Not amazing, but good. Best take-out Chinese for the area that we've tried so far. This will be our go-to take-out in Rochester. Despite some of the older reviews, they take credit cards. Also, the have an extremely simple online order form that you can access from their website. Some of the flyers they send and some of their internet data say that they deliver; they do not deliver. Extremely fast and friendly service. Prices are reasonable. Here's our order (we ate this for three meals): 1. General Tso Chicken - Really good. Quality cuts of chicken, fried up perfectly (not mushy, but with a nice crunch that you should get with fried foods). I ordered mine "hot" but it was mild at best. If they increase the heat, this will be an amazing dish. 2. Dragon and Phoenix - It contained the General Tso chicken we reviewed above and some spicy shrimp. Again, not spicy at all (considering it was supposed to be the hottest option). The shrimp were huge. I'd guess upwards of 10/15. The sauce they were in was a little strange, tasted like it had a ketchup base. I'll just get the General next time. 3. Hot and Sour soup - My wife liked it. She wished it had been spicier. I ordered hers medium, but, again, it was mild. The soup had some chicken in it and she normally prefers her Hot and Sour to be vegetarian. 4. Szechuan Bean Curd - Great tofu, but way too much cabbage and no spice. Add more broccoli and kick it up a notch please. 5. Shrimp Lo Mein - Really tasty and not too greasy. We'll order this again. We'd love it if they made a Bean Curd Lo Mein too. 6. House Special Fried Rice - Not their best dish. The meat was tiny and the rice was barely fried. It tasted more like white rice with onions, carrots, and peas. We will not order this dish again. read more

If I could give a zero I would! This is the worst the absolute worst Chinese food place I have ever ordered from!!!!!! Don't get the wrong idea cause I love Asian/Chinese food! And where I'm from the Asian food is always lit ! But from this place we ordered a beef dish and it did not look like beef and even tasted like pork. Which one of my friends had to throw it all up! And then we ordered a stir fry noodle dish but it looked like a sticky mess of random s... put together.. idk if we got the wrong order or something .. And then to make matters worse I pulled a hair from my mouth that was from the chicken dish I ordered which we basically already ate half of it! which makes us paranoid if they messed with our food. So we had to throw everything out! But at the same time I myself feel bad asking for a refund because I can tell it's a small family owned business. But NEVER again will I order from this place EVER!!! This was a very horrible experience and a waste of my own hard earned money!!!! read more

Stopped in for dinner this evening the bourbon chicken and wonton soup with a shrimp roll and pork and chicken fried rice was hungry, but glad I didn't order the Happy Family meal as it would have been way too much.
