Been to Ichi Tokyo tons of times with family, but recently service has been horrible. Servers don't seem to wanna be there or just want to sit on their phones in the back. I went there a couple weeks ago and I got the AYCE which took over an hour for us to receive our food. I had only been to the South location but tried the North finally. It is just a great as the South. I love that the rolls are not over riced. The rice to filling ratio is always in favor of the filling. AYCE is the way to go, every time. Temporarily relocated to Rochester and have eaten here (to go) a couple times. Been good experience so far - Spring rolls are top notch. Good sushi. Hibachi was "just OK" I don't think i will order a steak hibachi again - shrimp was fine but would like a ginger sauce. The traditional salad with the ginger onion carrot dressing was on point...in fact they sell it by the pint and we ordered some last time. This will happen again. We have been going here often before/ during/ after Covid (once a week). The food during Covid was decent but after Covid the food quality has severely diminished! We order a Spicy crab salad "NO ROE". This is the second time they add roe anyway. But they mix it in! For someone who doesn't like it this is a major turn off and basically it is uneatable. (See picture) They are going back and forth from week to week charging for spicy Mayo, eel sauce, avocado, and others. When you do order the "extras" they fill them half way. (See picture) Warning! If you do order from here please check your order before your drive home to see if they forgot some of your order. A few times they "forgot" a roll and I had to drive back or get a refund. This was my first time at the 22nd Ave Ichi, which is closer to my work than the Broadway location. My previous experiences with the Broadway location have been exception, albeit a bit expensive. But who can turn down all you can eat sushi with exquisite slices of sashimi? The 22nd Ave location is really the little brother and the quality shows. Service was reasonable but nowhere near as efficient or thorough. The menu is the same so there weren't any surprises. I got the Dinner Bento, which is salmon teriyaki with chicken katsu, along with small portions of shumai and Philadelphia rolls. The salmon and chicken were excellent but the shumai was soggy, watery, and disappointing. Really it tasted like it was quickly defrosted and/or microwaved for serving. read more

Having followed this restaurant and its crew since its early days as Asian Kitchen in 2011 to now its fourth year and second location I'm happy to report that this latest northwest restaurant is no exception to the tried and true formula that has made Ichi Tokyo so popular: fresh and affordable sushi! Touting a widely popular yet common "All-you-can-eat" sushi menu that many a struggling metropolitan sushi bar may offer, Ichi Tokyo rather builds on this concept as a primary model to serve out a la carte artistic creations of rolls, sashimi, soups, appetizers, terriyaki, and hot dishes. The food is nearly identical to that which we have come to expect from Ichi Tokyo and it certainly did not disappoint. If anything this north location located just south of Flapdoodles in the Papa John's complex close to US-52 and 37th Street sports a less crowded parking area and seems more accessible, especially since a large portion of the more hipster sushi crowd of Rochester probably lives in the northwest quadrant. I always worry when we see two locations of a good thing pop up in Rochester because it usually splits the customer base between the two locations while doubling the costs (most recent example: the late Best Buy South anyone?), having been to Ichi Tokyo South on a Friday or Saturday night in the past few months however, and often encountering over an hour wait, this new Ichi Tokyo north location might actually be a wise and rational move as the demand for fresh sushi in Rochester, MN has not seemed to wane over the past two years, and if anything as word on the street continues to grow so do the new fans of Ichi Tokyo. I for one continue to uphold my endorsement of Ichi Tokyo as best sushi in Rochester, Minnesota and this new North location holds true to that statement. Found this on Yelp and came for the sushi bar. Went with my sister who had never had the full sushi expierence. The staff was very attentive and kind. We had the Naruto Roll, the New Crazy Roll, some octopus and king crab sashimi and polished it off with Mango And Strawberry Moshi Ice Cream. The Naruto roll was good, pretty standard roll. The New Crazy roll was very delicious and savory. The octopus was tender and flavorful. The King Crab was okay. The Moshi Ice Cream was extremely good. I had the mango which was packed with flavor. This was my first time having Moshi ice cream and was a great first experience. Will be coming back in a couple weeks next time I'm down in Rochester. read more

I'm not the biggest sushi fan but I come here often with my friends. The menu is a little overwhelming because of how large it is. The sushi tends to be very well made and I really enjoy it. The price is very reasonable and you can get a lot for your money. If you are really hungry I'd suggest the all-you can eat but otherwise just one or two rolls is great for a small meal. I've been here a few times and while the service is good, the food fails to impress. Unfortunately, there aren't many sushi options here in Rochester, MN. Today, I ordered a bento box--which contains an entree, a roll of sushi, pork dumplings, and a salad--through UberEats and I specifically asked for "no sesame due to allergies." Not only did my sushi contain an ample amount of sesame seeds, it was also drenched in sauce that was supposed be on the entree. There was a random lettuce in my ginger and wasabi. I don't eat pork so I also asked for no pork dumplings and requested for them to provide a substitute "if available," but they did not bother to call to let me know that a substitute was not available--they simply ignored my request and included the pork dumplings in my order. In fact, that request was not even on my receipt when the food was delivered even though I clearly see it on my order in the UberEats app. My order seemed carelessly put together. The fish is rather low quality but the preparation masks it well. I'm rating this in general as average compared to other areas of the US - however, considering the location, I think the sushi is above average for Rochester, Minnesota. Between living in both Chicago and New York City currently, I have a lot of sushi. Usually at least once a week - it's hard to miss as you can find it literally every block in some areas in both of those cities. Visiting some family in Rochester, this is what I wanted and noticed they had all you can eat sushi. Perfect. They have a decent list of sashimi/nigiri as well as rolls. Positive points for actually offering hand rolls in all you can eat which isn't too common to be honest. They had some other things in there too which were decent like tempuras, soups, seaweed salad, etc. The thing that took me back was that they had a limit on the amount of sashimi/nigiri one could order which was 3 per person. What the fuck is that? Seriously. Never seen that anywhere in the world - even in the middle of IOWA in a city 1/3 the size as Rochester. Every place I've ever been in the world has unlimited nigiri. The weird thing is that they have unlimited hand rolls, which have just as much if not more sashimi in them as two pieces of nigiri do. A few salmon rolls also probably have just as much sashimi in them as two pieces of nigiri anyway. This rule honestly makes zero sense. I think it's probably fine for most people because most people think that a "Dragon Roll" is real sushi, even though it's not, and won't touch nigiri anyway. Still though, this is an absolutely terrible rule. Anyway - the sushi wasn't actually half bad. Not the best I've had by a long shot but also not the worst. Rochester is not home to any major airport and is 75 miles from the nearest decently sized one with real international traffic. For that, they do a decent job. I've been to this establishment 4 times now (twice to each of their 2 locations in Rochester). The food quality is pretty consistent and definitely enjoyable. Couple that with one of their 20% off coupons you can find all over the place, it makes for a pretty good deal. Their sushi is pretty good (8/10), I think there could be more fish though. I just came back from Japan as well so I'm a bit biased. Their noodle bowls are awesome deals. I'd say a 8/10 as well for consistency and quantity. If you are craving some sushi in Rochester, I'd check this place out. I asked the waiter everything I could eat off the menu and was still given a roll with imitation crab and fried shrimp. I got violently sick and still ended up paying the $26 for my meal.
