This facility is an older gym that has seen better days. That being said, let me tell you about the Olympic sized heated pool, flooded with natural light and warmed to a nice 80 degrees. Try to overlook the patched sidewalk and tired interior and focus on the beautiful aqua water and friendly staff. This club features Silver sneakers classes and is a good gym for seniors. As with Chrissy L. this is my local gym. I also used to go to a WOW down the road but once the monthly fees increased and it became what I like to call a "happy hour" gym (i.e. a place where you go after work instead of the bar to pick up people) I decided to look for a new place to get my sweat on. New England Athletic Club is not a fancy gym - if you are looking for something along the lines of LA Fitness or Big Sky this is not your place but if you are looking for a no frills gym this is your place. The gym does have a cardio section with treadmills, ellipticals and stair steppers and even during peak hours I have never had to wait for a machine. All of the cardio machines are several years old but they get the job done. As a runner I do try and run outside as much as possible but have been "forced" on several occasions to use their treadmills. I would only recommend them in desperate situations as I am not sure how often they are maintained. There is a full service weight lifting area with a variety of machines and free weights. In addition the facility has TRX bands, kettle balls and several other pieces of equipment that make it easy for people wanting to execute a Cross-fit type workout. They also offer a variety of aerobic, spin and water aerobic classes. Class schedules change every couple of months. Locker rooms, showers and lockers are also available for those looking to do a quick change before of after work. Child care is also available throughout the day. read more

Do not make the mistake of joining this gym. They have billed me for months for a membership they claimed I no longer had, making me pay cash to attend a class while charging my credit card for the monthly fee - both at the same time. It has been extremely difficult to get them to stop billing me and I have to cancel my credit card to do this! Could also mention that the facility is filthy. Should be able to give negative ratings for places like this. Was a member for a long time and then new management appeared. They drove away all of the good fitness class instructors (they all went to Elite Fitness in Cromwell- as did many customers). They changed the ambiance from a full service, friendly place to a fly-by-night $10/month dive. Thus, the new customers were paying a quarter or so of what the long term customers were paying which did not go over well. After the new owner took over exercise machines were not repaired for months, if ever, and cleaning was sporadic at best. Waited a few months till my contract was up and then left forever. The new owner argues with customers and tells them why they are wrong when they have suggestions. The last time I was there he was loudly telling a customer why he was right. update 8/2012: Rumor has it that the evil Bill is no longer the owner and Bob, who is a nice guy, is back running the place. This gym is a shadow of what it used to be when I first joined over 10 years ago: the classes and instructors were excellent, the hours were good, and the gym had a vibrant feeling. Fast forward to today: Things break and are never fixed, the pool has not been opened for 2 or 3 (or more) years, and the bathrooms and locker rooms are disgusting. The instructors are good, but I feel bad for them because their classes are generally empty compared to 10 years ago because the vast majority of people that used to go to the gym have left. If you want a dumpy and dirty gym, with broken equipment and no pool, then this place is okay. read more

Granted they have a swimming pool, a weight machine facility and such, this place just doesn't tickle my fancy with how it looked. The staff are good and mean well. Poor management and indecent maintenance cripples this place. Similarly, like other ice rinks complexes, all the money goes into the rink because that is where the money is. The gym part has old equipment, broken machines and very filthy overall. This is not the gym to sign up even tho they have a pool and membership includes classes. Your money clearly only keeps the lights on and the staff. They have recently bought new TVs but there is no way to listen to them. This gym needs major upkeep and renovations. Professional renovations! read more

The spin bikes are dangerously bad (they are the type you use at home, not at a commercial gym and they haven't been serviced..... ever). I worked in the area for a little more than 9 months and went to this gym almost daily. I visited several other gyms in the area, but I liked this one the best so I kept going back. The building is a little older than the other gyms I visited, but the equipment is good and it is never overcrowded. The one thing I noticed about the club was that the members were very focused on their exercises and there was a lot of non-traditional training going on. 6 reviews 2 minutes ago I joined this gym because it was on my Silver Sneakers list. Talk about a unkept moldy smelling gym to start! The equipment is not safe as I was injured on the reclining leg press when the one lock came undone as I stepped off hurting my right arm. Every other cardio machine is broke and when I reported it they seemed uninterested and a few weeks later they are still broken. My fiancé as well reported it. I had a stalker following me and starring at my butt...well after my fiancé saw him starting for several minutes doing this and seeing I was feeling creeped out my fiancé said something to him and this stalker said he wasn't!!! The stalker reported my fiancé and management said the stalker was a 20 year member and they never had a issue with him! LOL so this means he's not a creep and a stalker???? The end results are we were asked not to return to this gym, that's fine with us as the few weeks there was nothing but a BAD EXPERIENCE AND NOT A PROFESSIONAL STAFF TO SAY THE LEAST! read more

If you want your kids to learn to swim......go somewhere else. We have taken our kids here a few times, so please learn from our mistake. When the kids were little, we took them here. The instructors for my daughter's class changed every week and generally looked like they had a late night partying on Friday night. It had been a few years, so the last bad experience was a distant memory. We decided to bring our oldest here for private lessons. It took 3 phone calls before anyone would call us back to make an appointment. We rearranged our whole morning to accommodate her first lesson at 30 bucks a HALF HOUR (steep price to pay for a instructor still in high school that probably makes 10 bucks an hour). My wife arrived at the place and sat around for 10 minutes. Finally, she asked what was going on...apparently, the instructor could not make it in that morning. No call...nothing. There is nothing more maddening than a cancelled appointment with no notification to a place where you plan to spend good money. I'm glad they offered my 7 year old to join a class with 3 year olds. Can't really blame her for declining that invitation. The place just looks run down. And just like my kids, I'd be surprised if they can stay afloat. read more

OK, I should update my review, since it's from over 3 years ago! I don't know what they charge now for membership, FYI. So don't quote me on that price from a while back. I go to this gym a few times a week and I still enjoy it. I think one thing that intimidates people about joining a gym is that they're a little afraid of the other people there. People seem to be afraid of being judged for their level of fitness, etc. Everyone on the staff is really, really nice. You will see people of all shapes, sizes, and ages working out here. Of course in the weight room you're going to see those big, muscular guys. Sometimes they grunt when they're lifting heavy stuff, and it can seem intimidating to be working out near them. But as someone who started lifting weights last year, I can tell you that those guys are really, really nice. Everyone will leave you alone to work out, but if you need any help or have any questions about how to do something, go ahead and ask one of those guys if you can't find a trainer. They're way more than happy to answer questions. They're very friendly. And the smoothies are great. :) read more

I have been a member of the New England Athletic Club for approximately 3 years and I have been more than pleased with the changes that have taken place since the new owner "took over". I am appalled by the negative reviews that erroneously depict a great club. The staff is amazing and the energy of the club is nothing but inviting. The club is definitely cleaner then it has ever been and I am thankful for all the new equipment that has been purchased to replace the older "broken" equipment. This has been my main gym for 5 years now. I've read the reviews below. Just please take note of the dates of the reviews. As with any business, there are ups and downs. Yes, Bob is back and improving the gym all the time. Is it a brand spanking new glitzy gym? No. Is it clean? Yes. Does all the equipment work? Yes. Do I care if I have pretty wallpaper on the walls or decorations to look at? No. Do I care they put their money into improving the gym not just cosmetic work? Yes. But mostly what I care about are the personnel and the instructors and the members and management that actually listens to any concerns we may have. We have a few instructors that have been teaching there over 15 years, over 25 years. They ALL are truly caring, wonderful, knowledgeable, inspirational, helpful, and just plain nice people. People that I now consider friends. Next are the members. This is truly a non judgmental gym. We all support each other. It's not a pick-up gym or people walking around showing off. Actually, I would say the majority of the members are middle aged to older. No need to feel self-conscious here. Honestly, where can you go in this area and find a gym that offers 39 group fitness classes a WEEK, including cardio, spin, weight training, yoga, pilates, Zumba, Aqua classes for the price? Also included is a full basketball court, an Olympic sized swimming pool, showers, sauna, TRX room, massage, personal training. And you can ice skate in the hockey rink. This place has lot of facilities. It has a good pool, exercise rooms, aerobic and cycling rooms and a big free weight area. When joining they will tell you to take the 1-year plan which is expensive than the 2-year plan, but it doesn't matter just pick the cheaper one. Be extra careful while quitting and you have to do that more than 2 months in advance. This gym is a hidden gem in central Connecticut. The facility is more famous for the hockey/skating rinks but the gym and pool are quite nice, too. It never seems to be overcrowded like many of the "globo gyms" out there and the staff is friendly. It is also very clean. I've been a member at this gym for 11 years and it was the best gym around; never had to wait for machines, good people, clean, and no meatheads. About a year ago a new owner took over and made some decent changes but also reduced the price to $24 / month from ($46) which was obviously good but it also attracted some riffraff. Further, the pool was often completely rented, as were the basketball courts. Nevertheless the changes were bearable. Then, I go in there last week to find 2/3 of the free wieght section walled off for this new training program the club is offering. This wall completely changed the structure of the freewieght area as machines have been taken away along with 1/2 of the available dumbells, and the machines left are now crowded into the very tiny remainng area. One now has to literally dodge other machines and wieghts to get to other parts of the gym. The freewieght section is now awful and borderline dangerous. The walled off area was filled with young kids, along with their parents standing around watching creating an even more crowded environment. I've tried getting the owner on multiple occasions but he's never around and the new staff doesn't know a whole lot about whats going on either. I guess after 11 years its time to move on. I would not recommend this place to anyone! read more

I joined this facility when it was in transition from the old owner to the new old owner and it has improved tremendously. No, it is not fancy but it is clean and well maintained. The equipment is always in good working order. Classes are convenient. It is a Silver Sneakers facilty now which is great for seniors. New pool. Very responsive management and staff. Plenty of equipment and space to workout. Very affordable as well. You get a lot for your $ at this gym. Plus you even get a peek at hockey practices. read more

I am able to attend a wide array of classes or enjoy a good swim in the pool. The fitness instructors are challenging but also are great about meeting individual needs. This is a great gym! It's extremely clean too!!! There are a lot of services available, such as classes, lots of machines, a pool, sauna, ice skating rink, a basketball court, free weights, a room for classes, and trainers. Everyone that works there is very helpful, and kind. Also, this gym has great hours too! The variety of classes that are offered are at great times too. :) I LOVE THIS GYM!!!!
